1. He sent his glance into battle as a herald;

    if only it had come heralding union.

  2. Thus you see lovers, in love, either

    grateful for his union, or utterly ungrateful.

  3. Indeed, the people of passion fear a day

    whose evil, through estrangement, spreads far and wide.

  4. So he shielded them from it, and granted them, from

    his face that day, radiance and joy.

  5. And from his cheeks he rewarded them, for what they

    endured apart from him, with a garden and silk.

  6. His two temples and his two cheeks have prepared

    for my heart chains and a blaze.

  7. And when you see the flood of my tears,

    you take the tears for scattered pearls.

  8. If only he would cure my sickness with his saliva

    and give me from it a purifying drink—

  9. of pure nectar whose seal is musk;

    to me, its blend was camphor.

  10. Whenever he appeared to me, I beheld bliss

    in the radiance of his face, and a mighty kingdom.

  11. My beloved, do return to God in how you treat us;

    surely He is ever all-seeing of His servants.

  12. Do not obey any of my reproachers or tale-bearers,

    whether a sinner in their censure or an ingrate.

  13. Nothing has been sweet to me save love; and my rapture

    has ever been, in love, a radiant lamp.
