وقَف الهَوى لِي حَيثُ أنت فَلَيس لِي

مُتَأخَّرٌ عَنهُ ولا مُتَقَدَّمُ

My passion halted where you are, so I have

Neither preceded nor lagged behind it.

أجِدُ المَلامَة فِي هَواك لَذاذةً

حُبَّا لِذِكرِك إن يَلُمنِي اللُّوَّمُ

I find blame for loving you a sweetness

For love of your mention, though blamed.

أشبَهتَ أعدائِي فَصِرتُ أحِبُّهُم

إذ كَان حَظِّي مِنك حَظِّي مِنهُم

You resembled my enemies, so I came to love them,

Since my share of you is my share of them.

أمَّنتَنِي فَأمنتُ نَفسِي صامداً

هَل مَن يَهُونُ عَلَيك مِمَّن يُكرمُ

You gave me safety, so I kept myself safe, standing firm.
