1. إمسحوا عن ناظري كحلَ السُّهادْ

    وانفضُوا عن مضْجعي شوك القَتادْ

    Wipe the kohl of sleep from my eyes

    And remove the thorns from my bed

  2. أوْ خُذوا مِنّيَ ما أبْقَيْتُمُ

    لا أُحبُّ الجسْمَ مسْلوبَ الفؤادْ

    Or take from me what you have left

    I do not love a body devoid of spirit

  3. هل تُجيرُونَ محِبّاً منْ هَوىً

    أو تَفُكُّونَ أسيراً من صِفاد

    Can you protect a lover from passion?

    Or release a captive from shackles?

  4. أسُلُوّاً عنكُمُ أهجُرُكُمْ

    قلّما يَسْلُو عن الماءِ الصَّواد

    I ask about you and abandon you

    The thirsty rarely ask about water

  5. إنّما كانتْ خطوبٌ قُيِّضَتْ

    فَعَدَتْنا عنكُمُ إحدى العَواد

    It was just a fleeting affair

    So we turned away from you

  6. فعلى الأيّامِ من بَعْدِكُمُ

    ما على الثَّكلاءِ من لُبسِ الحِداد

    After you, the days

    Are like a widow in mourning

  7. لا مَزارٌ منكُمُ يدنو سِوى

    أن أرى أعلامَ هَضْبٍ ونِجاد

    I have no tomb near you

    Except seeing the flags of Hadb and Nijad

  8. قد عقلْنَا العيسَ في أوطانها

    وهي أنْضاءُ ذميلٍ ووِخاد

    We restrained the camels in their homes

    As they are the white of Dhumail and Wikhād

  9. قَلَّ تَنْويلُ خَيالٍ مِنكُمُ

    يَطَّبي بين جفونٍ وسُهاد

    The imagination of you rarely comforts

    Between my eyelids and sleep

  10. وحديثٌ عنكمُ أكثَرهُ

    عن نسيم الريح أو بَرْق الغَواد

    And talk of you is mostly

    About the breeze of wind or lightning of clouds

  11. لم يَزِدْنَا القُربُ إلاّ هِجْرَةً

    فرَضينَا بالتَّنائي والبِعاد

    Nearness to you only brought estrangement

    So we accepted separation and distance

  12. وإذا شاءَ زمانٌ رابَنَا

    برقيبٍ أو حَسودٍ أو مُعاد

    And if time brought us together

    With a watcher, or envier, or enemy

  13. فهداكمْ بارقٌ مِنْ أضْلُعي

    وسُقِيتُمْ بغَمامٍ مِن وَداد

    You were guided by a lightning bolt from my ribs

    And quenched by a cloud of affection

  14. وإذا انهَلَّتْ سماءٌ فَعَلى

    ما رفَعْتُمْ من سماءٍ وعِماد

    And if rain poured down, it was on

    What you raised of sky and pillars

  15. وإذا كانَتْ صلاةٌ فَعَلى

    هاشِمِ البطحاءِ أربابِ العِباد

    And if there was a prayer, it was for

    Hāshim of Bat'hā' lords of worship

  16. هُمْ أقَرُّوا جانبَ الدَّهرِ وهُمْ

    أصْلحوا الأيّامَ من بعدِ الفَساد

    They set right the side of time and

    Set right the days after corruption

  17. من إمامٍ قائمٍ بالقِسْطِ أو

    مُنذِرٍ مُنتخَبٍ للوَحي هَاد

    With an Imam establishing justice

    Or a Warner selected for revelation and guidance

  18. أهلُ حوضِ اللّهِ يجري سلسَلاً

    بالطَّهور العَذْبِ والصفو البُراد

    The people of the Basin of Allah, flowing

    With pure, fresh, cool water

  19. أسِواهم أبتغي يومَ النَّدى

    أم سواهم أرتجي يومَ المَعاد

    Should I seek their equal on the day of assembly

    Or hope for their equal on the day of judgment?

  20. هُمْ أباحوا كلَّ ممنوعِ الحِمَى

    وأذلُّوا كلَّ جَبّارِ العِناد

    They made lawful all the protected sanctuaries

    And humiliated every stubborn tyrant

  21. وإذا ما ابتَدَرَ النّاسُ العُلى

    فلهم عاديُّها من قبل عاد

    And when people take the high road

    They have it as a custom from early times

  22. فَلَهُمْ كلُّ نِجادٍ مُرْتَدىً

    ولهمْ كلُّ سليلٍ مُستَجاد

    Theirs is every well-trodden road

    Theirs is every noble line

  23. تَطلَعُ الأقمارُ من تيجانهم

    وعليهمْ سابغاتٌ كالدَّآد

    Moons rise from their crowns

    With shields as perfect as coats of mail

  24. كلُّ رَقراقِ الحَواشي فوقَهُمْ

    كعيونٍ من أفاعٍ أو جَراد

    All the small fry of riffraff above them

    Are like the eyes of vipers or locusts

  25. فعلى الأجساد وَقْدٌ من سَنىً

    وعلى الماذِيِّ صِبْغٌ من جِساد

    So there is a brand from withering on the bodies

    And a dye from dried blood on the deceased

  26. بجِيادٍ في الوَغى صافِنَةٍ

    تَفحَصُ الهامَ وأُخرى في الطِّراد

    With steeds foraying in battle

    Some searching out the valiant, others for plunder

  27. وإذا ما ضَرَّجُوهَا عَلَقاً

    بَدَّلوا شُهْباً بشُقْرٍ وَوِراد

    And when they stained them red

    They exchanged pale swords for crimson and flowers

  28. وإذا ما اختَضَبَتْ أيديهِمُ

    فَرَّقوا بينَ الأسارى والصِّفاد

    And when their hands were dyed

    They distinguished between prisoners and shackles

  29. تلكَ أيدٍ وَهَبَتْ ما كسَبَتْ

    للمعالي من طريفٍ وتِلاد

    Those are hands that gave what they acquired

    To the noble, the elegant and the tender

  30. هم أماتُوا حاتماً في طيِّءٍ

    مَيْتَةَ الدَّهْرِ وكعباً في إياد

    They killed Hātim in Tayyi'

    And Ka'b in Ivād, deaths of time

  31. وهُمُ كانوا الحيا قبل الحيا

    وعِهادَ المُزنِ من قبل العِهاد

    And they were the living before life

    And the defenders before other defenders

  32. حاصَرُوا مكَّةَ في صُيّانَةٍ

    عَقَدوا خيرَ حبىً في خيرِ ناد

    They defended Mecca in protection

    Binding the best covenant in the best refuge

  33. فلهُمْ ما انجابَ عنه فَجرُها

    من قَليبٍ أو مَصادٍ أو مَراد

    So theirs is whatever its plains delivered

    Of Qalīb, Masād, Marād

  34. أو شِعابٍ أو هضابٍ أو رُبىً

    أو بِطاحٍ أو نِجادٍ أو وِهَاد

    Or Shi'āb, Hadab or Rubā

    Or Bitaah or Nijād, or Wihād

  35. في حريمِ اللّه إذْ يَحمُونَهُ

    بالعَوالي السُّمْرِ والبِيضِ الحِداد

    As they protected it with steely strongholds

    And pure white banners

  36. ضارَبوا أبْرَهَةً من دونِهِ

    بعدَما لفَّ بَياضاً بسَواد

    They struck Abrahah before it

    After he had covered his surroundings in black

  37. شَغلوا الفيلَ عليه في الوغى

    بتُوامِ الطَّعْنِ في الخَطْوِ الفُراد

    They preoccupied the elephant in battle

    With repeated stabs of lone warriors

  38. فيهِمُ نارُ القِرى يَكنُفُها

    مثلُ أجبالِ شَرَورَى من رماد

    Within them is the fire of villages enveloped

    Like mountains of glowing ashes

  39. لهُمُ الجودُ وإنْ جادَ الورى

    ما بِحَارٌ مُتْرَعاتٌ من ثِماد

    Theirs is generosity even if the young camels wasted away

    Not a sea of waving meadows from yielding rain clouds

  40. وإذا ما أمْرَعَتْ شُهْبُ الرُّبَى

    لم يكُنْ عامُ انتِقافٍ واهْتبِاد

    And if the shooting stars of meadows flashed

    It would not be a year of vengeance and retaliation

  41. لكمُ الذَّروةُ من تلك الذّرى

    والهوادي الشُّمُّ من تلكَ الهَواد

    For you is the peak of those heights

    And the aromatic low valleys of those valleys

  42. يا أميرَيْ أُمراءِ الناس مِنْ

    هاشِمٍ في الرَّيدِ منها والمَصَاد

    O prince of the people

    Of Hāshim in leadership and victory

  43. وسَلِيلَيْ ليْثِها المنصور في

    غِيلِها مِنْ مُرْهَفاتٍ وصِعاد

    And grandson of its formidable lion al-Mansour

    In his raging battles and flaming fires

  44. يا شَبيهَيْهِ نَدىً يَومَ نَدىً

    وجِلاداً صادقاً يومَ جِلاد

    O you two who resemble dew on a day of dew

    And sincere skins on a day of tanning

  45. إنّما عُوِّدْتُما في ذا الورى

    عادةَ الأنواءِ في الأرض الجَماد

    You were accustomed in this abode

    To the custom of volcanoes in solid ground

  46. ما اصطناعُ النفس في طُرقِ الهوى

    كاصْطناع النفس في طُرق الرشاد

    The making of the soul in the ways of passion

    Is not like the making of the soul in the ways of guidance

  47. إنَّ يحيَى بنَ عليٍّ أهلُ ما

    جئتماهُ من جزيلات الأياد

    Indeed, Yahya ibn 'Ali deserved what

    You both came with of generous gifts

  48. كانَ رِقّاً تالِداً أوّلُهُ

    فأتَى الفضْلُ بِرقٍّ مُستَفاد

    He was a feeble newborn first

    So merit brought a robust maturity

  49. كم عليهِ من غَمامٍ لكما

    ولديه من رجاءٍ واعتِداد

    What clouds are over it for you two

    And hopes and plans with him

  50. عندَهُ ما شاءَتِ الأملاكُ منْ

    عَزمةٍ فصْلٍ وذَبٍّ وذِياد

    With him is what the angels desired

    Of resolve, excellence, provision, and effort

  51. واضطلاعٍ بالّذي حُمِّلَهُ

    واكتفاءٍ وانتِصاحٍ واجتِهاد

    And shouldering the responsibility placed on him

    And self-sufficiency, vitality and diligence

  52. مِثْلُهُ حاطَ ثُغورَ المُلْكِ في

    كلِّ دَهياءَ على المُلك نآد

    The like of him protected the frontiers of the kingdom

    In every situation against the kingdom and its helpers

  53. أيُّ زَنْدٍ فاقدَحاهُ ثم في

    أيِّ كفٍّ فصِلاها بامتِداد

    What a firebrand unsheathed for you

    And what a hand that unsheathed it in violence

  54. وغنيٌّ مثلُهُ ما دُمْتُمَا

    عن حُسامٍ وقَناةٍ وجَواد

    And a wealthy man like him, as long as you

    Do not lack swords, spears and steeds

  55. إنَّ من جرَّد سيفاً واحداً

    لمَنيعُ الركن من كيد الأعاد

    Indeed, one who has unsheathed even one sword

    Impregnable places are unsafe from the harm of enemies

  56. كيف من كان له سيفا وغىً

    منكما وهو كَمِيٌّ في الجِلاد

    So how much more one who has a sword and battle cry

    From you while he is skilled in decapitation

  57. إن أكُنْ أُنبيكما عن شاكِرٍ

    فلقد أُخبِرُ عن حَيَّةِ واد

    If I warn you of an ungrateful one

    I would report about a serpent of the valley

  58. نِعمَ مُنضي العِيسِ في ديمومَةٍ

    ومُكِلُّ الأعوَجِيّاتِ الجِياد

    Blessed is one who travels the camels in continuity

    And straightens whatever is crooked of steeds

  59. تحتَ برقٍ من حُسامٍ أو غَمامٍ

    من لِواءٍ أو وشاحٍ من نِجاد

    Under the flashes of swords or clouds

    Of standards or cloaks of flags

  60. نَبّهَا المُلكَ على تجريدِهِ

    فهُوَ السيْفُ مَصُوناً في الغِماد

    He awakened the kingdom to its preparedness

    It is a protected sword in its sheath

  61. كمْ مقامٍ لكما من دونهِ

    يُبْتَنى المجدُ على السَّبْع الشِّداد

    How many positions beneath it for you

    Where glory is built on wild beasts

  62. نِعَمٌ أصْغَرُهَا أكبرُهَا

    ويَدٌ معروفُها للخَلقِ باد

    Good deeds, the least of which is greater

    And a generous hand known to all people

  63. قد أمِنّا بعَمِيدَيْ هاشِمٍ

    نُوَبَ الأيّامِ من مُمْسٍ وغاد

    We secured from the vicissitudes of days

    With the noble reddish cloud

  64. بالأمير الطاهرِ الغَمْرِ الندى

    والحُسينِ الأبْلج الواري الزِّناد

    And the brilliant marten fur Peculiar for wrapping

    One is a lion that overpowers lions

  65. ذاكَ ليثٌ يَضْغَمُ الليثَ وذا

    حيَّةٌ تأكُلُ حَيّاتِ البِلاد

    And the other a serpent that eats the serpents of the lands

    You two are the best supplies for a man

  66. أنتُما خيرُ عَتادٍ لامرىءٍ

    هو من بعدكما خيرُ عَتاد

    And after you two the best supplies

    Through you the world submitted to us

  67. بكما انقادَ لنا الدَّهْرُ على

    بُعْدِ عَهدِ الدهرِ منّا بانقياد

    After an era of estrangement

    And through you I raised a flag

  68. وبما رفَّعْتُما لي عَلَماً

    ينظُرُ النّجمُ إليه من بُعاد

    That even the stars gaze at from afar

    And rhymes are not like steeds

  69. والقوافي كالمطايا لمْ تَكُنْ

    تَنبري إذ تنتحي إلاّ بِحاد

    That only neigh when they set out at a run

    It is a precious gem I commissioned

  70. جوهَرٌ آليْتُ لا أُوقِفُهُ

    موقفَ الذِّلَّةِ في سوق الكَساد

    Not to stand still like the degraded in a bankrupt market

    And if poetry meets its people

  71. وإذا الشِّعْرُ تَلاقَى أهْلَهُ

    أشرَقَتْ غُرَّتُهُ بعد اربِداد

    Its pride shines after tarnishing

    And if honor strikes its flint

  72. وإذا ما قَدَحَتْهُ عِزَّةٌ

    لم يَزِدْ غيرَ اشتِعالٍ واتِّقاد

    It only increases in inflammation and ignition

    Like the canal of a line, if you shake it

  73. كقَناة الخَطِّ إنْ زَعْزَعْتَهَا

    لم تَزِدْ غيرَ اعتِدالٍ واطِّراد

    It only increases in stability and continuity

    O sons of Mansoor and Qa'im, if

  74. يا بْنَيِ المنصورِ والقائمِ إنْ

    عُدَّ والمهديِّ مهديِّ الرشاد

    Counted, al-Mahdi, the Mahdi of guidance

    I do not see any deviant verse of praise

  75. لا أرى بيْتَ مديحٍ شاردٍ

    في سواكم غيرَ كفْرٍ وارتداد

    In anyone but you, other than blasphemy and apostasy

    And you have come just as I wished

  76. ولقد جِئتُمْ كما قد شِئْتُمُ

    ليس في فخركُمُ من مُستَزاد

    There is no increase in your pride
