يومٌ عريضٌ في الفَخارِ طَويلُ

ما تَنقَضي غُرَرٌ لهُ وحُجُول

A spacious day in glory is long

Its pearls and treasures never exhaust

يَنجابُ منهُ الأفْقُ وهو دُجُنّةٌ

ويَصِحُّ منْهُ الدهُر وهو عليلُ

The horizon gleams because of it while gloomy

And time revives though frail

مَسَحَتْ ثُغورُ الشامِ أدمُعَها بهِ

ولقد تَبُلُّ التُّرْبَ وهي هُمُول

The borders of Syria wiped their tears through it

Indeed, dust is soaked while tumultuous

وجَلا ظَلامَ الدِّين والدّنْيا بهِ

مَلِكٌ لما قال الكِرامُ فَعُول

The darkness of religion and life is unveiled through it

A king when the generous said: resolve

متَكَشِّفٌ عن عَزْمَةٍ عَلَوِيّةٍ

للكُفْرِ منها رنّةٌ وعَويل

Revealing a sublime determination

For blasphemy, it has tinkling and wailing from it

فَلَوَانّ سُفْناً لم تُحمِّلْ جَيشَهُ

حَمَلَتْ عزائمَهُ صَباً وقَبول

If ships didn't carry his troops

Their resolves carried youth and acceptance

ولَوَانّ سَيْفاً لَيسَ يَبْتِكُ حَدُّهُ

جَذَّ الرّقابَ بكَفّهِ التّنزيل

If a sword whose edge doesn't bisect

It snatched necks with its palm, the revelation

مَلِكٌ تَلَقّى عن أقاصي ثَغْرِهِ

أنباءَ ذي دُوَلٍ إليه تَدول

A king who received from the borders of his conquests

News of an authority revolving to him

بُشْرَى تَحَمَّلها اللّيالي شُرَّداً

خَيرُ المَساعي الشاردُ المحمول

Good tidings carried by nights roaming

The best efforts are the absent contemplated

تأتي الوُفُودُ بها فلا تَكرارُهَا

نَصَبٌ ولا مقرونُهَا مملول

Delegations come with it without repetition

Neither fatigue nor abundance

ويكادُ يَلقاهم على أفواهِهِمْ

قبلَ السَّماع الرّشْفُ والتّقبيل

They almost meet them with their mouths

Before hearing, sipping and kissing

يجلو البشيرُ ضياءَ بِشْرِ خَليفةٍ

ماءُ الهُدى في صَفحَتَيهِ يجول

The herald displays the light of the caliph's good tidings

The water of guidance swirling in his two riverbanks

للّهِ عَينَا مَن رَأى إخبْاتَهُ

لمّا أتاهُ بَريدُها الإجْفِيل

May God bless the eyes that saw his humility

When the Gospel came to him

وسُجودَهُ حتى التقى عَفْرُ الثرى

وجَبينُهُ والنَّظْمُ والإكليل

And his prostration until the dust's hair met

His forehead, prose and crown

لم يَثْنِهِ عِزُّ الخِلافَةِ والعُلى

والمجْدُ والتّعظيمُ والتبجيل

His caliphate and supremacy didn't prevent him

Nor glory, veneration and reverence

بينَ المواكبِ خاشِعاً مُتَواضِعاً

والأرضُ تَخشَعُ بالعُلى وتَميل

Humbly modest among processions

And the earth humbles to supremacy and leans

فتَيَمّمُوا ذاكَ الصّعيدَ فإنّهُ

بالمِسكِ من نَفَحاتِهِ معلول

So smell that ground for it is

Imbued with his breaths' musk

سيَصِيرُ بعدَك للأئِمّةِ سُنّةً

في الشكر ليس لمثلها تحويل

It will become after you a tradition for the imams

In gratitude that has no precedent

من كانَ ذا إخلاصُهُ لم يُعْيِهِ

في مُشْكِلٍ رَيْثٌ ولا تعجيل

He whose sincerity never exhausts him

In predicaments, neither pausing nor haste

لو أبصرَتكَ الرّومُ يومئذٍ دَرَتْ

أنّ الإلهَ بما تَشاءُ كَفيل

If Rome saw you that day it would know

That God suffices whom He wills

يا ليْتَ شِعري عن مَقاوِلِهِمْ إذا

سمعتْ بذلك عنك كيفَ تقول

I wish I know what their council says

If it hears of that about you, how would it say

ودُّوا وَداداً أنّ ذلكَ لم يكُنْ

صِدْقاً وكلٌّ ثاكِلٌ مَثكول

They would love and wish that hadn't happened

Truly and all are distressed and warped

هذا يدُلُّهُمُ على ذي عَزْمَةٍ

لا فيهِ تسليمٌ ولا تخذيل

This indicates to them one of determination

Without concession or retreat

أنْتَ الذي تَرِثُ البِلادَ لَدَيْهِمُ

فالأرضُ فالٌ والسجودُ دَليل

You who inherits countries from them

So the earth is inclining and prostration proving

قُلْ للدُّمُسْتُق مُورِدِ الجمعِ الذي

ما أصْدَرَتْهُ له قَناً ونُصُول

Tell the half-baked assembler of troops

Whom canyons and claws didn't dare

سَلْ رَهطَ مَنويلٍ وأنْتَ غَرَرْتَهُ

في أيّ مَعركَةٍ ثَوى مَنويل

Ask Manuil's rabble, whom you deluded

In which battle did Manuil lodge

منَعَ الجنودَ من القُفول رواجعاً

تَبّاً لهُ بالمُنْدِياتِ قُفُول

Preventing soldiers from retreating

Damn him with retreating regiments

لا تُكذَبَنَّ فكُلُّ ما حُدِّثْتَ مِن

خَبرٍ يَسُرُّ فإنّهُ منحول

Don't believe them, all I told you

Of news that delights is fabricated

وإذا رأيتَ الأمْرَ خالَفَ قَصْدهُ

فالرأيُ عن جِهَةِ النُّهَى مَعدول

If you see the matter unlike its aim

Opinion is derived from the forbidden

قد فالَ رأيُكَ في الجلاد ولم تَزَلْ

آراءُ أغمارِ الرّجالِ تَفِيل

Your opinion triumphed over the tyrant and opinions

Of the commons' ignorance always bend

وبعثْتَ بالأسطولِ يحملُ عُدّةً

فأثابَنَا بالعُدَّةِ الأسطول

You sent the fleet carrying supplies

So it rewarded us with the fleet

ورميْتَ في لَهَواتِ أُسْدِ الغابِ ما

قد باتَ وهْي فَريسَةٌ مأكول

You threw in the forests of the roaring lion what

Spent the night a devoured prey

أدّى إلينا ما جمعْتَ مُوَفَّراً

ثمّ انثَنى في اليَمِّ وهو جَفول

It handed us its hoarded goods

Then recoiled into the sea tired

ومَضَى يَخفُّ على الجنائبِ حَمْلهُ

ولقد يُرى بالجيش وهو ثقيل

It went hiding its load on the side

The army looks heavy though it was light

نَفّلْتَهُ من بعْدِ ما وَفّرْتَهُ

مَنٌّ لعَمرُكَ ما أتيتَ جَزيل

You gave it to us after hoarding it

A grace you never brought plenty

إيهاً كذاكَ فإنّهُ ما كان مِنْ

بِرِّ الكِرام فإنّهُ مقبول

How can a dwarf hope with his cubit

A palace and the caliphate has heights

رُمتُ الملوكَ فلم يبِنْ لك بينَهَا

شَخصٌ ولا سِيما وأنتَ ضئيل

He blamed the peninsula, shelter of refugees

Its hospitality hosted and lodged him

أتقدُّماً فيهمْ وأنتَ مؤخَّرٌ

وتشبّهاً بهِمُ وأنْتَ دَخيل

The land is wide imposing villages on him

So he rewards with groups while stingy

ماذا يُؤمّلُ جَحْدَرٌ في باعِهِ

قِصَرٌ وفي باعِ الخلافةِ طُول

Lions are hosted in their burrows ignorantly

While the docile are visited

ذَمَّ الجزيرة وهي خِدْرُ ضَراغِمٍ

سامَتْهُ فيها الخَسْفَ وهو نَزيل

A war tricked by false assumption

If not, the certainty of wisdom an alternative

والأرضُ مَسبَعَةٌ تُكلّفُه القِرى

فيجودُ بالمُهَجات وهو بخيل

Assumption is deception so how if

Fallible opinion and ignorance meet

قد تُسْتَضافُ الأُسْد في آجامِهَا

جهلاً بهنَّ وقد يُزارُ الغِيل

He came and the tribes all gathered

And God's victory is enough omen

حَربٌ يُدَبّرُهَا بظنٍّ كاذبٍ

هلاّ يقِينُ الحَزْم منه بَديل

He assembled brigades mobilizing them

To you before sending regiments

والظَّنُّ تغريرٌ فكيف إذا التقَى

في الظَّنّ رأيٌ كاذبٌ وجَهول

Victory doesn't show its truth

Unless the few meets the many

وافَى وقد جَمَعَ القَبائِلَ كلّهَا

وكفاكَ من نَصْرِ الإلهِ قَبِيل

They came, the land filled with their crowds

Stallions and the horizons neighing

جَمَعَ الكتائبَ حاشِداً فثناهُمُ

لك قبلَ إنفاذِ الجيوش رَعيل

Then they recoiled without consciously stabbing

With javelins or drawing swords

والنصرُ ليسَ يُبِينُ حقَّ بَيانِهِ

إلاّ إذا لَقِيَ الكثيرَ قليل

They descended where they didn't touch its dust

As if descending was dissolving

جاءوا وحَشْوُ الأرْضِ منهم جحفَلٌ

لجِبٌ وحَشْوُ الخافِقَينِ صهيل

They left in it no trace of existence

Except torrents torrenting to torrents

ثم انْثَنَوْا لا بالرّماحِ تَقَصُّدٌ

بادٍ ولا بالمُرهفَاتِ فُلُول

The vanguards' squadrons attacked so reached

What praising can't reach

نَزَلوا بأرضٍ لم يَمَسّوا تُرْبَهَا

حتى كأنَّ وقوعَهم تحليل

That which the half-baked wanted to war

God has in it a drawn sword

لم يتركوا فِيها بجَعْجاعِ الرّدَى

إلاّ النجيعَ على النجيعِ يَسيل

Its land is neither pasture nor battlefields

Egypt nor the Nile's breadth

خاضَتْهُ أوظِفَةُ السوابقِ فانتهى

منهُنَّ ما لا ينتهي التَّحْجِيل

I wish Heraclius appeared there until he recoiled

And humiliation and submissiveness befell the half-baked

إنّ التي رامَ الدُّمُستُقُ حَربَها

للّهِ فِيها صارمٌ مسلول

That which pelted them with pebbles

And has in Armenian lands lodging

لا أرضُها حَلَبٌ ولا ساحاتُهَا

مِصْرٌ ولا عَرَضُ الخليجِ النِّيل

The wave doubts from it while engulfing

And misfortunes seek asylum from it though mighty

ليْتَ الهِرَقْلَ بدا بها حتى انْثَنى

وعلى الدُّمُستُقِ ذِلّةٌ وخُمول

They are Arabs slaughtering non-Arabs, it is

A sharper spear and polished blade

تلك التي ألقت عليهم كلكلاً

ولها بأرض الأرمنين تليل

That is what killed wretchedly him

Who barely dies while killed

يَرتابُ منها الموجُ وهو غطامط

ويداع منها الخطب وهو جليل

They find it between ribs and abdomens

As if it were groans and anguished wailing

نحرت بها العرب الأعاجم إنها

رُمْحٌ أمَقُّ ولَهْذَمٌ مَصْقول

As if it were time itself settling above them

Cannot be diverted or shifted

تلكَ الشّجا قد ماتَ مغصوصاً بها

من لا يكادُ يموتُ وهو قتيل

As if it were midday's sun above them

The gaze recoils while weakened

يَجِدونَها بينَ الجوانحِ والحَشا

فكأنّما هي زفرَةٌ وغَليل

That isn't but that its sturdy rope

Is tied with Muhammad's family ropes

وكأنّها الدّهْرُ المُنيخُ عليهِمُ

لا يُستَطاعُ لِصَرفِهِ تحوْيل

Leave it gathering thousands of brigades

So it is despair and loss is inevitable

وكأنّها شمسُ الظّهيرَةِ فوقَهُمْ

يرْتَدُّ عنها الطَّرْفُ وهو كليل

It is what guides the protectors of its men

An extra to you, do you accept

ما ذاكَ إلاّ أنّ حَبْلَ قَطِينِها

بحِبالِ آلِ محمّدٍ مَوْصُول

If you tasked armies their goals

You'd task them a prolonged travel to it

ذَرْهُ يُجَمِّعُ ألْفَ ألف كتِيبَةٍ

فهو النَّكُولُ وجَمْعُه المفلُول

It suffices that its departure from its land

Makes the year for you departure

وهو الذي يُهْدي حُماةُ رجالِهِ

نَفَلاً إليك فهل لديكَ قَبُول

So when time narrowed show him

With resolve whom shall resolve

لو كنتَ كلّفتَ الجيوشَ مَرامَها

كلّفْتَها سَفَراً إليه يطولُ

Let nations know with penetration

That the cross which you strengthened is disgraced

فكفاكَ وَشكُ رَحيلِهِ عن أرْضِهِ

عن أن يكون العامَ منك رحيل

Let them worship other than Christ, after it

There is no longing in the creed of monasticism

حتى إذا اقْتَبَلَ الزّمانُ أريْتَهُ

بالعَزْمِ كيفَ يصُولُ مَن سيصُول

That isn't what the captives' testimony points to

While the tyrant ridicules the straying lowly one

فلْتَعْلَمِ الأعلاجُ عِلماً ثاقِباً

أنّ الصّليبَ وقد عززتَ ذليل

They are free from Islam under its swords

Except appreciating patience as it is beautiful

وليَعْبُدُوا غيرَ المسيحِ فليس في

دينِ الترَهُّبِ بعدها تأمِيل

They took the path of heretics and after that

No path to life remained

ما ذاك ما شهِدَتْ له الأسرَى بهِ

إذ يَهْزَأُ الطّاغي بهِ الضِّلّيل

Satisfied with the transmitted words but behind it

Treachery while the transmitted swords are sharp

بَرِئَتْ منَ الإسلامِ تحتَ سيوفِهِ

إلاّ اعْتِدادَ الصّبرِ وهو جميل

The freeman may buy shame protecting

His chastity while inclined to vileness

سلكتْ سبيلَ المُلحِدينَ ولم يكُنْ

من بعد ذاكَ إلى الحياةِ سبيل

Were the Berbers known before that for courage

Opinion in war solid and original

أرِضىً بمأثورِ الكلامِ وخلفَهُ

غَدْرٌ ومأثور الحديد صقيل

Whence purpose to them and from wonder, when

Did warriors become pregnant she-camels

فالحُرُّ قد يَقْنى الحَياءَ حفيظَةً

وهو الجَنيبُ إلى الرّدى المملول

The frequent fleers, I wonder about them

Were they told natures transform?

هل كان يُعرَفُ للبطارقِ قبل ذا

بأسٌ ورأيٌ في الجِلادِ أصيل

The most swelling and arrogant

Until tongues and canines are muzzled

أنّى لهم هِمَمٌ ومِنْ عَجَبٍ متى

غَدَتِ اللّقاحُ الخورُ وهي فُحول

Until when the goblet was poisoned and wars

Gulped maliciously by souls

أهلُ الفِرار فليتَ شِعْري عنهمُ

هل حُدّثوا أنّ الطّباعَ تَحُول

They retreated displaying humiliation and dread

To nature returns the molded one

الأكثرينَ تخمُّطاً وتكبُّراً

ما لم تُهَزّ أسِنّةٌ ونُصُول

Since to you they still have continuous scheming

Hidden enmity, constant affection and compliance

حتى إذا ارتعصَ القَنا وتلمّظَتْ

حَرْبٌ شَرُوبٌ للنفوس أكول

Frequent repentance, guided submission, habitual petition

And messages routinely and messengers

رَجَعُوا فأبْدَوْا ذِلّةً وضَراعَةً

وإلى الجِبِلّةِ يرجعُ المجبول

If you accept, it is a thanked favor

To you then you are the hoped relied upon

إذ لا يزالُ لهم إليك تغلْغُلٌ

وسُرىً وَوَخْدٌ دائِمٌ وذمِيل

If you refuse, it is a shining determination

Fulfilled inevitably

وإنَابَةٌ مُنْقَادَةٌ وإتَاوَةٌ

ورسالَةٌ مُعْتَادَةٌ ورسول

Let them be invaded by the most worthy invader

As God suffices as trustee over it

فإذا قَبِلْتَ فمِنّةٌ مشكورةٌ

لك ثمّ أنْتَ المُرتَجى المأمول

Al-Musharrafiyya will achieve in them

What the keenest cannot achieve

وإذا أبَيْتَ فعزمَةٌ مضّاءَة

لا بُدّ أنّ قضاءَها مفعول

Its clattering will be heard in their worry

If clattering can be heard for swords

وليَغْزُوَنّهُمُ الأحَقُّ بغزوهم

واللّه عنْهُ بما يَشاءُ وكيل

Your horses will reach where dawn

Neither rising nor forenoon reached

ولتُدرِكَنّ المَشْرَفِيَّةُ فيهِمُ

ما يَنْثَني عن دَركِهِ التّأميل

How many of their homelands your deserted, leaving

Wealth as booty and homes barren

وليُسْمَعَنّ صَلِيلُها في هامِهِم

إن كان يُسمَعُ للسيوفِ صَليل

Behind them wherever they ended and ahead wherever

Stretches and wastelands are crossed

وليَبْلُغَنَّ جِيادُ خيلِكَ حيْثُ لم

يَبْلُغْ صَباحٌ مُسْفِرٌ وأصِيل

As if between gangs it has hounds

As if between plateaus it has howls

كم دَوّخَتْ أوطانَهُمْ فتركتَها

والمالُ نَهْبٌ والدّيارُ طُلول

You came to the land from its corners

And stepped on it with resolve while submitting

فوراءَهم حيثُ انْتَهَوْا وأمامَهُم

تُطَوى بِهنَّ تنائفٌ وهُجُول

Its mountains felt your awe

Until we thought they would collapse

فكأنّها بينَ اللِّصابِ نَضانِضٌ

وكأنّهَا بينَ الهِضابِ وُعول

Kings slept in litters and recoiled

Languid while your gaze on the pillow awakens

ولقد أتَيْتَ الأرضَ منْ أطْرافِها

ووطِئْتَها بالعزم وهي ذَلول

None will support the true religion and its people

If he is busy from it with other matters

واستشعَرَتْ أجبالُها لك هَيْبَةً

حتى حَسِبناَ أنها ستَزُول

You are distracted by loftiness chatter whenever

Those distracted you maliciously and inclusively

نامَتْ ملوكٌ في الحَشايا وانْثَنَتْ

كَسْلى وطَرفُكَ بالسهاد كَحيل

With that, enough that you drag a nation

And enough for people that buckets are dragged

لن ينصُرَ الدينَ الحنيفَ وأهْلَهُ

مَن بعضُهُ عن بعضِهِ مشغول

No nation you enriched and guided

Will lack you, disclosing blindness and attaining water

تُلهِيكَ صَلْصَلَةُ العوالي كلما

ألهت أولئك قينة وشمول

No subjects whose justice shades them

Above them a barrier over their groups spread

وبذاك حسبك أن تجرر لأمة

وبحسبِ قومٍ أن تُجَرّ ذُيول

As if your shining state amongst them

Is gold poured on their days

لا تَعْدَمَنّكَ أُمّةٌ أغنَيْتَهَا

وهَدَيْتَها تَجْلُو العَمى وتُنيل

They will not lack that rescue for it is

A shade over those bloodlines comforting

ورَعِيَّةٌ هُدّابُ عَدلِكَ فوقَها

سِتْرٌ على مُهَجاتِها مسدول

Who can be guided without the aided caliph

Guidance without him is misguidance

فكأنّ دَولَتَكَ المنيرةَ فيهمُ

ذَهَبٌ على أيّامِهِمْ مَحلول

Who does the Quran witness his merit

The Torah and Bible verify?

لا يَعْدَمُوا ذاكَ النّجادَ فإنّهُ

ظِلٌّ على تلكَ الدِّماءِ ظَليل

Description is possible of him but

No simile or likeness are released

مَن يهتدي دونَ المعِزِّ خليفَةً

إنّ الهدايةَ دونَهُ تضليل

If people compared to him, they are to his essence

A presentation embedded into him

مَنْ يَشْهَدُ القرآنُ فيه بفضْلِهِ

وتُصَدّقُ التّوراةُ والإنجيل

Eyes return to him while observant

When they leave, they are minds

والوَصْفُ يُمكِنُ فيهِ إلاّ أنّهُ

لا يُطْلَقُ التّشبيهُ والتّمثيل

I examined him so I failed realizing him

Though by my conscience he is realized

والناسُ إن قِيسوا إليه فإنّهُمْ

عَرَضٌ له في جوهرٍ محمول

All the imams among your ancestors are virtuous

If you were specified, they are all without merit

تَرِدُ العيونُ عليه وهي نَواظِرٌ

فإذا صَدَرْنَ فإنّهُنَّ عقول

So pride yourself, for from your lineage is Paradise, if

Enumerated and from your accounts the revelation

غامَرتُهُ فعَجَزتُ عن إدراكِهِ

لكنّه بضمائري معقول

I see all people vainly while you are the truth

The known and unknown do not equal

كلُّ الأئِمّةِ من جُدودِكَ فاضِلٌ

فإذا خُصِصْتَ فكُلُّهُمْ مفضول

The whole wilderness testified for your supremacy

The wilderness is an accepted witness

فافخَرْ فمِن أنسابكَ الفرْدوْسُ إن

عُدّتْ ومن أحسابِكَ التنزيل

God's indication of Himself in us

While you are evidence over evidence

وأرى الورى لَغْواً وأنتَ حقيقةٌ

ما يَستَوي المعلومُ والمجهول

شَهِدَ البريّةُ كلُّها لكَ بالعُلى

إنّ البرِيّةَ شاهِدٌ مقبول

واللّهُ مدلولٌ عليهِ بصُنْعِهِ

فينا وأنْتَ على الدّليلِ دَليل
