1. أنُظلِمُ أن شِمنا بوارقَ لُمَّحا

    وضحنَ لساري الليل من جنب تُوضحا

    When the lightning flashes lit the dark,

    And the moonlight shone clearly through the night,

  2. بعينك أن باتت تُحرِّقُ كُورَها

    محجَّلةً غُرّاً من المُزنِ دُلَّحا

    Your eyes kept burning in their sockets,

    Heavily kohled, a doe-eyed gazelle.

  3. ولمّا احتضَنّ الليلَ أرهَفنَ خصرَهُ

    فباتَ بأثناء الصّباح مُوشَّحا

    When night embraced the dark in its arms,

    It awoke at dawn dressed in jewelry.

  4. تَحمّلَ ساريها إلينا تحِيّةً

    فهيّجَ تذكاراً ووَجداً مُبرِّحا

    Its banner carried a greeting to us,

    Stirring up memories and overflowing passion.

  5. وعارضَهُ تِلقاءَ أسماءَ عارضٌ

    تَكفّى ثَبيرٌ فوقَهُ فترجّحا

    To meet the rising constellations

    There rose a full moon hanging in space.

  6. ولمّا تَهادَى نكّبَ البِيدَ مُعْرِضاً

    وأتْأقَ سَجْلاً للرّياض فَطفّحا

    When it declined setting in the west,

    It spilled its light generously on the gardens.

  7. تَدلّى فخِلتُ الدُّكنَ من عَذَباتهِ

    كواسِرَ فُتْخاً في حِفافيْه جُنَّحا

    It hung down, so I imagined the darkness

    To be waves breaking gently on its banks,

  8. لِتَغْدُ غَواديهِ بمُنعَرج اللّوى

    موائحَ رَقراقٍ من الرِّيّ مُتَّحا

    That would make its valleys in the morning

    Scented meadows moistened with rainwater,

  9. سقَته فمجّتْ صائك المسكِ حُفَّلاً

    تسُحُّ وأذرَتْ لؤلؤ النظم نُضَّحا

    You watered it, so your pure musk dripped

    And the pearls of verse scattered everywhere,

  10. فلم تُبق من تلك الأجارع أجرعاً

    ولم تُبقِ من تلك الأباطح أبطَحا

    Until no high elevated place remained

    Nor low valley left among them.

  11. وللّه أظْعانٌ ببُرْقَةِ ثَهْمَدٍ

    وقد كرَبتْ تلك الشموسُ لتَجنحا

    By the bright flash of lightning in Thahmad

    Those suns were eclipsed and began to set.

  12. أجَدِّكَ ما أنْفَكُّ إلاّ مُغَبَّقاً

    بكأس النوى صِرْفاً وإلاّ مصَبَّحا

    I solace myself with nothing but a cup

    Of passion, or dreams that illuminate the dark.

  13. وأبيضَ من سِرّ الخِلافَةِ واضِحٍ

    تجلّى فكان الشمسَ في رونقِ الضّحى

    From the essence of the caliphate shone one

    Whose whiteness outshone the sun at dawn,

  14. عنيفٌ ببَذلِ الوَفرِ يَلحي عُفاتَه

    على صَفَدٍ ما كان نُهزَةَ من لَحى

    A torrent of generosity with impregnable virtue

    Never once made fragile throughout his life,

  15. تَوَخّاهُمُ قبلَ السؤالِ تبرّعاً

    بمعروفِ ما يُولي وسِيلَ فأنجحا

    Seeking them before being asked, voluntarily,

    With kindness that makes the suppliant successful.

  16. صَحا أهلُ هذا البذل ممّنْ عَلمتَه

    وأمسكَ بالأموال نشوانُ ما صَحا

    Those whom you knew to have this generosity triumphed,

    While the misers of wealth gained nothing.

  17. ذروا حاتماً عنّا وكَعباً فإنّنا

    رأيناه بالدنيا على الدين أسمحا

    Leave Hatim and Kaʿb alone, for we

    Saw him prefer religion over worldly things.

  18. أريكَ به نَهْجَ الخلافة مَهيَعاً

    يُبين وأعلامَ الخلافة وُضَّحا

    I will show you his caliphal path zigzagging,

    Clarifying the standards of the caliphate.

  19. كثيرُ وجوه الحزْم أردى به العِدى

    وأنحى به ليْثَ العَرينَةِ فانتحى

    His resolve repelled many enemies,

    And turned aside the ferocious lions.

  20. ولمّا اجتباه والملائكُ جُندهُ

    لمَهلكهم دارت على قُطبها الرّحى

    When God chose him and made the angels his troops

    The heavens revolved around their axis for his foes.

  21. فقلّدهَا جَمَّ السياسةِ مِدرهاً

    إذا شاء رام القصْدَ أو قال أفصَحا

    He made you the pivot of all policy, well-guided,

    Aiming straight or speaking most eloquently.

  22. نحاهم به أمضى من السيف وَقعُه

    وأجزَلَ من أركان رَضوى وأرجحا

    He guided them by means more effective than the sword,

    And more beneficial than the pillars of peace.

  23. وقد نَصَحَتْ قُوّادُه غيرَ أنّني

    رأيتُ ربيبَ المُلكِ للملكِ أنصَحا

    Though his commanders counseled him, I saw

    The caliph's foster son give the soundest advice.

  24. رآه أميرُ المؤمنين كعهدِهِ

    تشبُّ لَظى الهيجاء ألفَحَ ألفَحا

    The Commander of the Faithful saw you as before,

    Like the sharp blade of a sword, striking and striking.

  25. رَمى بك قارونَ المغاربِ عاتياً

    وفرعونَها مستحيياً ومذبِّحا

    He dispatched you to the rebellious Qarun of the Maghrib

    And its Pharaoh, recalcitrant and slaughtering,

  26. ورامَ جِماحاً والكتائبُ حَولَه

    فوافاكَ في ظلّ السُّرادق أجمَحا

    Who had gathered troops and regiments around him

    Until you overwhelmed him in the shade of his pavilion,

  27. فلمّا اطلَخَمّ الأمرُ أخفَتَ زأرَه

    فمجمج تعريضاً وقد كان صرّحا

    But when matters came to a head, you subdued his roar,

    Murmuring indirect threats you had already declared openly.

  28. مُرَدِّدُ جأشٍ في التراقي فضَحتَه

    وكانتْ له أُمُّ المنيّةِ أفضَحا

    You cut down his lofty delusions,

    And death's mother was the one who cut him down.

  29. ومُطّرِحُ الآراءِ ما كَرّ طَرفَه

    ولا ارتدّ حتى عادَ شِلْواً مُطرَّحا

    You did not cast your eyes about waveringly,

    Nor retreat until you returned completely defeated.

  30. فلم يُدْعَ إرناناً ولا اصْطفَقَتْ له

    حلائلُه في مأتَمِ النَّوح نُوَّحا

    No one called him Arnana, nor did his tricks

    Avail him in the place of weeping and lament.

  31. وغُودِرَ في أشياعهِ نَبأً وقدْ

    مَحوْتَ به رسمَ الدّلالة فامّحى

    He was abandoned among his followers when the news—

    Which you had erased like a guiding sign—spread.

  32. وأدركتَ سُولاً في ابن واسول عَنوةً

    وَزَحزَحتَ منه يذبُلاً فتزَحزَحا

    Forcefully you took the son of Wāsūl captive

    And you wrenched away from him one worn out and frail.

  33. وإلا أبنْه في العُصاةِ فإنّني

    أرى شارباً منهم يميل مُرَنَّحا

    By my life! If you reunite him with his beloved ones

    He would be their best guide to the path of destruction.

  34. يموت ويَحْيا بينَ راجٍ وآيسٍ

    فكانَ له الهُلْكُ المُواشكُ أرْوَحا

    How many nights of separation you ruined him,

    Serving him the cup of death at dawn!

  35. تضَمّنَه حَجْلٌ كلَبّة أرقَمٍ

    إذا خَرِسَ الحادي ترَنّمَ مُفصِحا

    You tore down what obstinacy had built up

    Though its pillars in that shaking were firmly fixed.

  36. أُريكَ بمرآةِ الإمَامَةِ كاسْمها

    على كُورِ عَنْسِ والإمامَ المرشَّحا

    While from its balconies the horizon roared

    And its banners, until they tumbled down flattened.

  37. وقد سَلَبَتْه الزّاعبيّةُ ما ادّعى

    فأصْبحَ تِنّيناً وأمسَى ذُرَحْرَحا

    It had been an open gate, without any army,

    But when your right hand approached and opened it,

  38. فما خطبهُ شاهَتْ وجوه دُعاتهِ

    وجُدّعَ من مأفون رأيٍ وقُبّحا

    Nights of wars like shooting stars

    Whose flames were fanned and stoked,

  39. وكان الجذاميُّ الطويلُ نجادُه

    بهيماً مَدى أعصارِهِ فتوضّحا

    The son of Abu Sufyan saw in them his right guidance

    And he renounced corruption and put things right.

  40. عَجِلتَ له بَطشاً وإنّ وراءه

    لَخَرْقاً من البيد المرَوراتِ أفيحا

    He called you to secure him, so you answered him,

    Though had you not saved him with your wisdom he would have perished.

  41. مُعاشِرُ حربٍ يحلب الدهرَ أشطُراً

    فلم يتّرِكْ سَعْياً ولم يأتِ مَنجَحا

    Against the family of Musa you launched campaigns

    Stirring up for them those violent storms.

  42. أقولُ له في موثَقِ الأسرِ عاتباً

    تُجاذبُه الأغلالُ والقيدُ مُقْمَحا

    When they saw there was no escape for the fugitive

    And death's mother bared her teeth at them,

  43. لئن حَمَلَتْ أشياعُ بغْيكَ فادحاً

    يغولُ لقد حُمّلتَ ما كان أفدحا

    While the flooding sea of death was passing

    And the expanse of earth grew narrow as their theater,

  44. ولا كابنه أذكى شهاباً بمعركٍ

    وأجمحَ في ثِنْي العنانِ وأطمحا

    You pardoned the guilty out of bounty and mercy,

    Though it would have been your right to refuse and punish.

  45. مَرَت لك في الهيجاء ماءَ شبابهِ

    يدٌ فَجّرَتْ منه جداولَ سُيَّحا

    They intended, because of that sword, to depart,

    So you gave their leaders the freedom of the open range.

  46. وأثكَلْتَه منه القضيبَ تهَصّرَتْ

    أعاليه والرّوْضُ المُفوَّفُ صُوّحا

    The fortress builder was a towering mountain,

    Yet you left him a desolate wilderness in Tayma.

  47. لَعَمري لَئنْ ألحقتَهُ أهلَ ودّه

    لقد كان أوحاهم إلى مأزِقِ الرّحى

    Whatever the Destroyer had decreed came to pass;

    You were never blamed in the evening or the morning.

  48. وكم هاجعٍ ليلَ البَياتِ اهتَبَلتَه

    فصَبّحتَه كأسَ المنيّةِ مُصْبِحا

    Signs that no ruin could ever destroy

    Or whose loss the doves might mourn cooing.

  49. وهدّمْتَ ما شادَ العِنادُ وقد رَسَتْ

    أواخِيهِ في تلك الهَزاهزِ رُجَّحا

    They were—and it was an Age of Ignorance—

    Until God made clear the path and elucidated it.

  50. على حينَ ضَجّ الأفقُ من شُرفاتهِ

    وأعنانِهِ حتى هَوَتْ فتَفَسّحا

    Whoever purified himself of them succeeded,

    Led by the trustee of the angels, purified and successful.

  51. وقد كان باباً مُرْتَجاً دونَ جَنّةٍ

    فلمّا دَنَتْ تلك اليمينُ تَفتَّحا

    I swear by the courtyards of the Kaaba, a sanctuary,

    And by the Black Stone and its circumambulator,

  52. ليالي حُروبٍ كُنّ شُهْباً ثَواقباً

    لها شُعَلٌ كانتْ سَمائمَ لُفَّحا

    They would go back to witnessing miracles

    If you but touched the pebbles with your palm, and they would glorify!

  53. رأى ابنُ أبي سفيانَ فيها رشادَه

    وعَفّى على إثْرِ الفسادِ وأصْلحا

  54. دَعاكَ إلى تأمينهِ فأجَبْتَه

    ولو لم تَدارَكْه بعارفةٍ طَحا

  55. وفي آلِ موسى قد شنَنتَ وقائعاً

    أهَبْتَ لهم تلك الزّعازع لُقَّحا

  56. فلمّا رأوا أنْ لا مفَرّ لهارِبٍ

    وأبدَتْ لهم أُمُّ المنيّة مَكلَحا

  57. وأكدى عليهم زاخرُ اليمّ مَعبراً

    وضاقَ عليهم جانبُ الأرضِ مسرَحا

  58. صَفحتَ عن الجانينَ مَنّاً ورأفةً

    وكنتَ حريّاً أن تَمُنّ وتَصفحا

  59. وقد أزمعوا عن ذلكَ السِّيفِ رِحْلَةً

    فملّكْتَ أَولاهمْ عِناناً مُسرَّحا

  60. وكان مَشيدُ الحصْنِ هَضْبَ مُتالعٍ

    فغادَرْتَه سَهْباً بتَيْماءَ صَحصَحا

  61. قضى ما قضى منه البَوارُ فلم يُقَلْ

    نعمتَ ولا حُيّيتَ مُمسىً ومُصْبَحا

  62. معالِمُ لا يُنْدَبنَ آوِنَةً ولا

    تنوحُ حمامُ الأيك فيهنّ صُدَّحا

  63. وكانوا وكانَتْ فترةٌ جَاهِليّةٌ

    فقد نَهّجَ اللّهُ السبيلَ وأوضَحا

  64. لأفلحَ منهم مَن تزكّى وقادَهُ

    حوارِيُّ أملاكٍ تَزكّى وأفلحا

  65. حلفتُ بمستَنّ البِطاحِ أليّةً

    وبالركن والغادي عليه مُمسِّحا

  66. لَرُدّوا إلى الآياتِ مُعجِزةً فلو

    لمستَ الحصى فيهم بكفّيكَ سَبّحا
