1. صغائر افعال الملوك عظائم

    وأعراسها في الناكثين مآتِمُ

    The minor deeds of kings are momentous

    And their weddings for the violators are laments

  2. هو الملك ما أدراك ما الملك دونه

    تمرّ حلاوات وتحلو علاقم

    He is the king, what do you know what the king is?

    Sweets pass by and bitter things become sweet

  3. ولولا ركوب الليل لم يبلغ الضحى

    ولولا الرزايا لم تصحَّ المكارم

    If not for traveling the night, dawn would not arrive

    And if not for calamities, virtues would not be purified

  4. بلى ربما ساد امرئ من يسوده

    وقام بأمر القوم من لا يقاوم

    Yes, sometimes an inferior man rules over his superiors

    And takes charge of people's affairs, without resistance

  5. ولكن يبين الصبح من حالك الدجى

    ويغرفُ من نزر المياه الخضارم

    But the dawn makes clear to you the state of your darkness

    And draws gently from the springs of water

  6. ويخشى الفتى من بأسه قبل باسه

    وقد تتقى قبل العضاض الأراقم

    And the young man fears his might before his might

    While the weak may avoid the strong out of caution

  7. وما كل من هزّ السيوف مُضاربٌ

    ولا كلُّ من لاقى الكماة مصادم

    Not everyone who brandishes swords is a combatant

    Nor is everyone who meets lances a fighter

  8. وكل امرئ كان المعزّ إمامَهُ

    يضيم ولا يهدي له الضيمَ ضائمُ

    And every man whose leader was the goat

    Oppresses and no oppressor harms the oppressed for him

  9. فقل لبني العبّاس ردّوا مظالما

    فقد آن منكم أن تردّ المظالم

    So say to the Abbasids, return the injustices

    For it is time for you to return the injustices

  10. وإلا فردوا للمعز وسالموا

    فأسلم أعداء المعزّ المسالم

    Or return to the goat and make peace

    So the goat's enemies make peace

  11. وما ينقضي حلي الخواتم منكم

    وليس لمقطوع اليدين خواتم

    The bracelets of your wrists will not last

    And the handless has no bracelets

  12. لبستم ثياب الملك وهي عمائم

    وكيف على الأقزام تلوى العمائم

    You wore the garments of kingship yet they are turbans

    How can turbans fit upon dwarves?

  13. ألم تأتكم أنباؤه وسماته

    على أوجه الأيّام منها مياسم

    Did not news and signs of him reach you

    Through the faces of days, some of which are cheerful?

  14. وحسنُ معانيه التي لو تجسّمت

    غدت وهي من حسنٍ خرود نواعمك

    The beauty of his meanings which if embodied

    Would become, in their beauty, gentle gazelles

  15. وما هد أرض الروم منه وقلقلت

    بنا ملكهم من خوفه والدعائم

    The land of Rome did not quake from him and shake

    Demolishing their kingdom from fear, and the pillars

  16. فجاؤوه من شتى مقرٌّ ومرسلٌ

    وفادٍ ومفديٌّ وراض وراغمُ

    So they came to him from various dwellings, envoys and ransomed

    Appeasers and antagonists, content and coerced

  17. فألفوه لا الدنيا تميل به ولا

    كرائم ما تحوي عليه كرائم

    They found him neither does the world incline towards him

    Nor do the noble virtues contain him

  18. وأشجعهم في مجلس الملك ناطق

    وأبينهم في هيبة الملك سالم

    The bravest among them in the king’s council are speakers

    And the most eloquent among them in the king’s awe are silent

  19. وأشجع من عين رأته فلم تَجُد

    حشاشةُ نفس أمسكتها الحيازم

    And braver than an eye that saw him and did not find

    The mettle of a soul held back by resolves

  20. ولولا دفاع الأصر عن مهجاتهم

    لخانتهمُ أقدامهم والقوائم

    Were it not for the defense of lineages from their blows

    Their feet would have betrayed them, and the pillars

  21. فما ظنُّكم ان أيقظ العرض سيفه

    إذا كان هذا فعلَهُ وهو قائم

    So what do you think, if the honorable drew his sword

    When this is his deed while still sheathed?

  22. وقالوا بهم فاغمد حسامك جُنّة

    فقلت لهم إن السيوف تمائم

    And they said, “Sheathe your sword, O gentleman”

    So I said to them, “Swords are symbols”

  23. وما ضرّ ذا حقّ أباطلُ خصمه

    إذا كانت الأقدارُ عنه تُخاصم

    The falsehood of a foe does not harm one in the right

    If the divine decrees contend with him

  24. وكل بناء أسس البغي أسه

    يتاح له من كفّ بانيه هادم

    And every structure founded on tyranny, its builder

    Allows it to be destroyed at his own hands

  25. بني الدولة الغراء شيموا سيوفكم

    فإني لها الملكَ العراقيَّ شائم

    O noble state, sheathe your swords

    For I censure the Iraqis’ kingdom

  26. وعزما فقد تعمى عيونُ صيرة

    إذا لم يكن كحلَ العيون العزائمُ

    And resolve, for the eyes of insight may go blind

    If they lack the kohl of resolves

  27. فعن معصم الرأي المعزّيّ بطشُكم

    وهل تبطش الراحات لولا المعاصم

    It is from the resolute, supporting forearm that your might comes from

    Can palms strike without forearms?

  28. ولولا هرقل لم يعد ساطعُ الهدى

    ولا زال ليليٌّ من الكفر فاحم

    And if not for Heraclius, the rightly guided would not remain

    And the night of disbelief would persist, overwhelming

  29. فليس الورى منه ولا هو منهمُ

    وإن جمعت بين الفروع الجرائم

    He is not of their kind, nor are they of his

    Though the branches of crime converge

  30. وقد يدرك الشيئين مشتبهين من

    جهات ومنها قائم البغي نائم

    And two similar things may coincide

    From perspectives, while the unjust sleeps wakefully

  31. وليس من الآنس البهائم إن جرت

    مع الإنس في معنى الحياة البهائم

    The beasts are not of mankind, even if they share

    With man in the meaning of life, the beasts

  32. أألله لا تنفكُّ هادمَ عسكر

    كأن الذي عبّوا إليك الهزائم

    Oh God, may you not cease to destroy the demolisher of the army

    As if those who were routed to you by defeats

  33. بكلّ بلاد جرّ جيشُك ذيلَه

    معالم من أحوالهم لا عوالم

    In every land your army dragged its tail

    Leaving signs, not worlds, of their conditions

  34. كأن لم يروا فيها لغيرك رايةً

    ولا سُمِعت فيها لجيش هماهم

    As if none besides you raised a flag there

    Nor was heard in it the battle cries of an army

  35. وما من قليل سُدتَ أبناءَ هاشم

    وإن كان منهم سادةٌ وأكارم

    The chiefs of Hashim, though few, you empowered

    Even if among them were lords and nobles

  36. وفي الجسم أشياءٌ حسانٌ وإنّما

    تُخَصُّ بحُسن اللثم منها المباسم

    And in the body are beautiful things, but

    Only the cheeks are distinguished by a beautiful smile

  37. بمصرٍ صبابات إليك وطالما

    صرمتَ ولهفي من حبيبٍ يصارم

    With an Egyptian burst forth to you, and for long

    You have peeled, while I yearn for a beloved rival

  38. فروِّ صداها من جيوشك إنّما

    هي القلب مهجوراً وهنّ الضراغم

    Repel her echo from your armies, she is but

    A neglected heart, and the veins are weak

  39. وناد فإن لم تسعَ نحوك أرجُلٌ

    سعت طاعةً عنها إليك الجماجم

    Call out, for if feet do not hasten to you

    Then skulls obediently hasten to you

  40. وما بعدت غايات طاغٍ مصارم

    إذا امتُطِيت يوما إليه الصَّوارمُ

    The ends of a tyrannical aggressor do not remain distant

    If one day the swords are ridden to him

  41. فيا ظالم الأموال كيف قدرت أن

    تضاف إلى الإنصاف واسمك ظالم

    O embezzler of wealth, how could you reckon

    To be associated with justice when your name is oppressor?

  42. غرُبت ولم تغرب وبنتَ ولم تَبِن

    فكلّ ضميرٍ جاهلٍ بك عالمُ

    You are a stranger, yet did not estrange, you built yet did not build

    So every ignorant conscience of you is knowing

  43. كلّ بليغ في صفاتك أعجَمٌ

    وكلُّ ملومٍ في نوالك لائم

    Every eloquent one is in describing you mute

    And every blamer in attaining you is culpable

  44. فلو تقدر الألفاظ أكثر تَرجمت

    ولكنّ هذا ما تُطِيقُ التراجِمُ

    If words could do more, they would interpret,

    But this is what translations can convey
