سرى وجناحُ الليلِ أقتمُ أفتَخُ

ضجيعُ مِهادٍ بالعبيرِ مُضَمَّخُ

The wing of night fell dark and still,

My bed lay perfumed, my pillow fulfilled,

فحيّيْتُ مُزْوَرَّ الخَيالِ كأنّه

مُحَجَّبُ أعلى قُبّةِ المَلْكِ أبلخُ

So I greeted the specter of dreams like a vision

Veiled atop a royal dome revealed,

وما راعَ ذاتَ الدَّلّ إلاّ مُعَرَّسي

ومُلْقى نِجادي والجُلالُ المنوَّخُ

Nothing stirred but the swaying palms,

My tresses strewn, my garb’s folds steeled,

وخِرقٌ له في لِبْدَةِ الليْثِ مَرتعٌ

وفي لهواتِ الأرقمِ الصَّلِ مَرسَخُ

A rent through the lion’s jaw his feeding place,

Among the dunes his claws steeled.

إذا زارها انحطّتْ عُقابُ مَنيّةٍ

وليسَ لها إلاّ الجَماجِمُ أفرُخُ

Whenever death’s vultures alight,

Naught remains but bleached skulls peeled.

يَحِلُّ على الأمْواهِ تُتْلَعُ دونَها

رؤوسُ العوالي والمذاكي فتُشدخُ

Swooping down to the watering holes

Where only the antelope skulls are peeled.

بحيث مَجَرُّ الجيش وهوَ عَرَمْرَمٌ

وأجْبُلُه من قَسطلٍ وهيَ شُمَّخُ

An army surging on its tapes,

Its vanguard mailed and shields steeled,

بَميْثاءَ تَروي المسكَ بالخمرِ كلما

تَسلسَلَ فيها جَدولٌ يتنضّحُ

At Metha its steeds drinking wine whenever

A stream through its midst spilled.

بها أُرْجُوانِيُّ الشقيقِ كأنّه

خُدورٌ تُدَمّى أو نحورٌ تُلَخْلَخ

The rose thus rendered vermillion,

As if blood-smeared necks filled.

لئن كان هذا الحسنُ يُعجَمُ أسطُراً

لأنْتِ التي تُمْلينَ والبدرُ يَنسَخ

If this beauty verses illumined,

You inspired, the full moon copied.

ثكلْتُكِ شَمْساً من وَرَاء غَمامَةٍ

وجَنّةَ خُلْدٍ دونَها حالَ بَرزَخ

I lost you, sun beyond a cloud,

And heaven, beyond the isthmus yonder.

فإنْ تسأليني عن غليلٍ عَهِدتِهِ

فكالجمرِ في خَدّيْكِ لا يتبوّخ

If I complain of anguish once known,

Like embers in your cheeks angered.

ألا لا تُنَهْنِهْني الخطوبُ بحادثٍ

فلي همّةٌ تَبري الخطوبَ وتَنتِخ

Oh trouble me not with events renewed,

My spirit repels events hardened!

فلا تَشْمَخِ الدّنْيا عليّ بقَدْرِها

فإنّي بأيام المُعزّ لأَشمَخ

So boast not of days that made me lowly

When my fortune is great, I’ll be haughty!

يؤيّدهُ المقدارُ بالِغَ أمْرِهِ

ويُمْدَحُ بالسَّبْع المَثاني ويُمدَخ

Destiny aids his purpose fulfilled,

Praised in the seven oft repeated.

فمَهْلاً عِداه ما على اللّه مَعْتَبٌ

وليس لما يأتي به الوَحيُ مَنسَخُ

Wait, his vengeance is not swift,

Nor can revelation be repealed.

لكَ الأرضُ دونَ الوارثينَ وإنما

دعَوتَ الورى فيها عُفاةً فبخبَخوا

Yours is the land, not the heirs’ to claim

You summoned mankind, they came and were ruined

أشَبْتَ قُرونَ المُلكِ قبلَ مشيبهِ

فأرضاكَ منه أشْيَبُ الحلم أشيَخ

You donned the crown ere it was time

So reason’s grey satisfied your rule.

تَفَرّدتَ بالآراءِ لا يومُها غَدٌ

ولا سُرُجُ الآياتِ فيهنّ بُوَّخ

Your views were yours, no tomorrow in them,

No glimmer of verses probed.

وليس ظِهارٌ يحجُبُ الغيبَ دونَها

ولكنّها قدسيّةٌ فيه تَرسُخ

No veil obscures the unseen from them,

But a sanctity within composed.

على الشمس دون البدر منها أسرّةٌ

وفي يَذْبُلٍ منها شَماريخُ بُذَّخ

Over the sun, below the moon they loom,

And when withered, stars cluster pulverized.

وقد وفَد الأسطولُ والبحرُ طالبَيْ

ندى مُزْمعي هيجاءَ هذا لذا أخ

The armada sailed seeking the scent

Of my braids, wild with joy for this ode of mine.

كما التَهَبَتْ في ناظرِ البرقِ شُعلةٌ

تلَقّى سَناها من فمِ الرّيح مَنفَخ

As lighting flickers in lightning’s sight,

It meets the gale from the wind’s mouth blown.

لديكَ جنودُ اللّهِ غضْبَى على العِدى

لها منكَ في الجندِ الرُّبوبيّ مُصرِخ

You command god’s armies raging at injustice,

Their heavenly general in them imbued.

فلو أنّ بحراً يَلتَهِمنَ عُبابَه

لمَرّ نُفاثاً بينَها يتسَوّخ

An ocean swallowing their clouds entire

Would pass as billows cleaved in two.

ترى الفجرَ منها تحتَ ليلٍ مُسبَّجٍ

كأنّ حداداً فيه بالنِّقْسِ يُلطَخ

You see dawn beneath a starry night,

As if in mourning, blackened pitch imbued.

لها لَجَبٌ يستجفلُ المزنَ صَعقُه

ويقْرَعُ سمعَ الرّعدِ زأراً فيصمخ

For them a roar to shake mountains in their peaks,

And thunder to pierce hearing, leaving it mute.

زئيرُ ليوثٍ مُدّ في لهَواتها

وهَدْرُ قُرومٍ في الشقاشق بخبخوا

The roar of lions stretching in their plains,

The neigh of steeds in ravines crying aloud.

نَضوا كلّ لَفْحٍ من غِرارِ مهنّدٍ

هو الجَمرُ إلاّ أنّه ليس يُنفَخ

They gore each burst of sparks,

Though but embers, they are fires stoked.

يَشُقُّ جُيوبَ الغِمْدِ عنه اتقادُه

وللحيّةِ الرّقشاءِ في القيظ مَسلخ

Ripping through the scabbard’s hem, their kindling

As the bristled serpent in blazing noon scorched.

إلى كُلّ عَرّاصِ الكُعوب كأنّه

نَوَى القَسْبِ إلاّ أنه ليس يُرضَخ

To each champion’s joints overborne,

At each crown of the head maces clocked.

بكلّ ثِقافٍ من عواليكَ مَدعَسٌ

وفي كلّ سِمحاقٍ من الرأس مَشدَخ

News travelled with tidings that make

A child turn grey and a deaf man hear.

لقد سارتِ الرُّكْبانُ بالنّبَإِ الذي

يَشيبُ له طفلٌ وينصاتُ أجْلخ

The idols roared, their clamor

An echo of Marwan’s clan, distraught.

وضَجّتْ له الأصنامُ إن ضَجيجَها

صَدىً من بني مروان حرّان يَصرخ

O Hashimites, who but you mastered

An age of disgrace, its nights transfixed?

بني هاشمٍ هل غَيرُ عَصْرٍ مُذَلَّلٍ

لَياليهِ أقْتابٌ عليها وأشْرُخ

You came in the wake of dissolution, boundaries open,

You brought the horizon near, the miles annexed.

أتيتم وراء الهول فاليمّ مَشرَعٌ

وقرَّبتمُ الآفاق فالأرض فرسخ

Whenever Uthman’s cauldrons foamed,

You were lions, the unknown your prey ravaged.

وكنتُمْ إذا ما ماجَ عُثنونُ قسطلٍ

كما اغبرّ مجهولُ المخارِم سَرْبَخ

You hunted the beasts of earth in every battle,

As if Qanas in them, boiling pots cracked.

قَرَيتُمْ سباعَ الأرض في كل معركٍ

كأنّ القنا فيه طُهاةٌ وطُبَّخ

You guided them, each tyrant,

Armored steeds scornful, lavish with all they had.

وقُدتُمْ إلَيْها كُلَّ ذي جَبَريّةٍ

على المُقرَباتِ الجُرْد تَبأى وتبذخ

Not lazy colts, or skittish fillies,

Or lumbering pack animals overburdened.

من الطالباتِ البرْقَ لا الشأو مُرهَقٌ

ولا العِطف مجنوب ولا الرِّدف أبزخُ

If hardship shook them, it was as

A captive, like a slave, eyes downcast.

إذا شَدَخَتْه مَشْقَةٌ أنّ مُوقَذاً

حَسيراً كما أنّ الأميمُ المُشدَّخ

Abundant in beauty, watering channels

But amongst boulders lodged.

كثيرُ جِهاتِ الحسنِ تَهمي جداولاً

ولكنّها بين المحاجر ثُوَّخ

Safe from the mischief of spying eyes,

Anointed, purified, and scoured.

يُعَوَّذُ من مكحولةِ الخِشفِ إن بدا

ويُنضَحُ نفْتَ الراقياتِ ويُنْضَخ

A band who lost the guide, you guided aright,

You cleared the fog, and they were confounded.

فداءٌ لفاديكم من الناس معشرٌ

لَهم رَوعُ دهرٍ منكمُ ليس يُفْرَخ

By my life, though Quraysh claimed excellence,

We found the musk essence in you implanted.

رجالٌ أضّلوا رائداً وهَدَيتُمُ

وجَلّيتُمُ عنه العَماءَ وطَخطخوا

You counseled kings of East and West with wisdom

Each saw and heard from you though partially blind and deaf.

لعَمري لئن كانت قريشاً بزَعمها

فإنّا وجَدنَا طينةَ المسكِ تَسنَخ

Tell me, which water most generous?

Which of God's mountains in earth most anchored?

نصَحتَ ملوكَ العُرْبِ والعُجم بالتي

يراها عَمٍ منهم ويسمع أصْلخ

True guidance and refuge you were

Before faces were blotted out and stamped.

أتدْرونَ أيُّ المَاءِ أكثرُ ساقياً

وأيُّ جبالِ اللّه في الأرضِ أرسخ

Helper of guidance, God's pool of intercession

Cascading beneath the throne, fresh and renewed.

هُدىً واعتصاماً قبل تُطمس أوجهٌ

تُشاه بلَعْنِ اللاعنينَ وتُمْسخ

You slaked thirst, no craving soul before you

Nor ancient pact to be undone.

مُعِزُّ الهُدى للّهِ حَوضُ شفاعةٍ

يُسلسَلُ تحتَ العرش رِيّاً ويَنقخ

Firm in your crown's covenant, your might fulfilled,

In both horizons' kingdom timeless.

سقيتَ فلا لبُّ اللبيبِ مُعَطَّشٌ

لديكَ ولا كافورَةُ العهدِ تَسنخ

Where do you fear for a breach uncompelled

When your steeds in Karhiya's plains roam unleashed?

مُبينٌ بعَقدِ التاج ما أنتَ بالغٌ

وميقاتُ مَلْكِ الخافقَينِ المؤرَّخ

You've overwhelmed India's kings and Sind's,

Nights their elephants like camels knelt.

وأينَ بثَغْرٍ عنكَ يُبْغى سِدادُه

وخيلُكَ في كرخيّة الكرخ تُكرخ

You've set them afire, and it is fire - not that

Kindled a thousand years, and left a husk.

وقد عجمَتْ هندَ الملوك وسِندَهَا

ليالٍ تركنَ الفيلَ كالبَكرِ يَقْلخ

If religion now takes them suddenly

It is the grasp of lightning in the clouds cracked.

لأصْليتَها ناراً هي النّارُ لا التي

تُنَتِّخُ فيها ألفَ عامٍ وتُمْرَخ

Portents of victory or hovering angels?

Horizons or a heaven knocking?

فإن يَختطِفْها الدينُ خَطفَةَ بارقٍ

فمنْ أسَدٍ ناتي البراثنِ تُمْلَخ

Cold has not reached you, though pure your aim,

But gales bursting, tearing away.

أآياتُ نَصْرٍ أمْ ملائكُ حُوَّمٌ

وأطرافُ أرضٍ أم سَماءٌ تُدَوَّخ

You traveled, leaving stars behind

Like verdant meadows, blessed and ample.

وما بلغتْكَ البُردُ أنضاءَ نيّةٍ

ولكنّها أرماقُ ريحٍ تَفسَّخ

Say to Thursday's feast, your standard

Is victory's, refreshing, so emerge!

سَرَينَ فخلّفْنَ النّجومَ كأنّها

هَجائنُ عِيسٍ في المبارِكِ نُوَّح

Clasp me to them though factions intervene,

Their drinking cups replenished and brimming.

فقُلْ للخميس الطُّهْرِ إنّ لواءكمْ

نخا نخوةَ النصرِ المُعِزِّيّ فانتَخوا

Elders who have tied the bond of peace,

Youths who roar when plied in combat.

ألِكْني إليهم والتّنائفُ دونهم

سقَتهم أهاضيبٌ من المُزن نُضَّخ

How excellent the precincts of faith that join them,

For we saw the circle of life completing.

كهولٌ بنادي السلم قد عقدوا الحُبى

شبابٌ إذا ما ضَجّ في الحيّ صُرَّخ

Comport yourself virtuously and the lamb will bear

Young, horns bud, after that, sprout.

لَنِعْمَ وُكورُ الدينِ تَدرُجُ بينها

فإنّا رأينا دارجَ الطّيرِ يُفْرِخ

وأخْلِقْ به فالعنزُ تُنتَجُ سَخْلَةً

ويبزلُ نابٌ بعد ذاك ويَشرخ
