1. أقوى المُحَصَّبُ من هادٍ ومن هِيدِ

    وودّعونَا لِطيّاتٍ عَباديدِ

    The strongest fortress is made of ledges and cliffs,

    And we bid farewell to twisting valleys and slopes,

  2. ما أنسَ لا أنسَ إجفالَ الحجيجِ بنا

    والرّاقصاتِ من المَهْريّةِ القُود

    We shall not forget the barrenness of Al-Hijr towards us,

    And the dancing girls from Al-Mahriyyah tied with ropes,

  3. ذا موقِفُ الصَّبّ من مرمى الجمار ومن

    مَشاخبِ البُدْنِ قَفْراً غير معهود

    This is the stance of youth at the racing track and from,

    The bare hillocks - an unusual spectacle,

  4. ومَوقِفُ الفَتَياتِ الناسكاتِ ضحىً

    يَعْثُرْنَ في حِبَراتِ الفِتيةِ الصِّيدِ

    And the stance of the devout young women at dawn,

    Stumbling upon the footprints of the young hunters,

  5. يُحْرِمنَ في الرَّيطِ من مثنىً وواحدةٍ

    وليسَ يَحْرِمْنَ إلاّ في الموَاعيدِ

    Taking an oath of abstinence from pairs and singles,

    Yet they only abstain at the known occasions,

  6. ذواتُ نَبْلٍ ضِعافٍ وهي قاتلِةٌ

    وقد يُصِيبُ كَمِيّاً سَهمُ رِعديد

    Ladies of weak descent, yet deadly,

    As an arrow of thunder may strike a pitcher,

  7. قد كنتُ قَنّاصَها أيّامَ أذعَرُهَا

    غِيدَ السّوالفِ في أياميَ الغِيدِ

    I used to hunt them during the days when I startled them,

    The warbles of night chatters in my glory days,

  8. إذْ لا تَبيتُ ظِباءُ الوحشِ نافرةً

    ولا تُراعُ مَهاةُ الرملِ بالسِّيد

    The wild deer of the wilderness do not spend the night alarmed,

    Nor do the roar of sands alarm with the hunter,

  9. لا مثلَ وَجدي برَيعانِ الشبابِ وقَدْ

    رأيتُ أُمْلودَ غُصْني غيرَ أُملود

    None like my prime days of youth when,

    I saw my branch not barren yet unfruitful,

  10. والشيبُ يضرِبُ في فَودَيّ بارقَهُ

    والدّهْر يَقدَحُ في شمْلي بتَبديدِ

    And grey hairs strike my cheeks with their glimmer,

    And fate assails my group with dissolution,

  11. ورابَني لَوْنُ رأسي إنّه اختلفتْ

    فيه الغمائمُ من بِيضٍ ومن سود

    The color of my head confused me, for

    The clouds have changed in it from white to black,

  12. إن تبكِ أعينُنا للحادثات فقدْ

    كَحلننا بعد تغميضٍ بتسهيد

    If our eyes weep for events, then we have lined them,

    After blindness, with tranquil rest,

  13. وليسَ تَرضى اللّيالي في تصرّفِها

    إلاّ إذا مَزجَتْ صاباً بقِنديد

    The nights are not pleased with their course,

    Unless they mix youth with old age,

  14. لأعْرُقَنّ زماناً راب حادِثُهُ

    إذا استَمَرّ فَألقَى بالمَقَاليد

    I shall contend an era whose event,

    Continued, so I cast off the carrying litters,

  15. في اللّهِ تصْديقُ ما في النفس من أمَلٍ

    وفي المُعِزّ مُعِزِّ البأس والجُود

    My faith in what the soul hopes for is in Allah,

    And in the Glorious, glory of might and bounty,

  16. الواهِبِ البَدَراتِ النُجلِ ضاحِيَةً

    أمثالِ أسنِمَةِ البُزْلِ الجَلاعِيدِ

    Bestower of young crescent moons radiantly rising,

    Like the chiming anklets of the supple-bodied maidens,

  17. مُؤيَّدِ العزْمِ في الجُلّى إذا طرَقَتْ

    منَدَّدِ السمْع في النّادي إذا نودي

    Supporter of resolve unveiled when challenges arise,

    Attentive of hearing in the club when called,

  18. لكلّ صوْتٍ مَجالٌ في مَسامعِهِ

    غيرِ العَنيفَينِ من لَوْمٍ وتَفنيدِ

    For every sound there is room in his hearing,

    Other than the harsh ones of blame and insult,

  19. وعندَ ذي التاجِ بِيضُ المكرُماتِ وما

    عندي له غيرُ تمجيدٍ وتحميد

    And the Graced One has the purest of favors while I,

    Have for him none but praise and gratitude,

  20. أتْبَعْتُهُ فِكَري حتى إذا بَلَغتْ

    غاياتِها بين تصْويبٍ وتصعيد

    I followed his wisdom until when it reached

    Its limits between guidance and elevation,

  21. رأيتُ موضِعَ بُرهانٍ يبينُ وما

    رأيتُ موضعَ تكييفٍ وتحديد

    I saw the place of proof that clarifies while I have not,

    Seen the place of interpretation and determination,

  22. وكان مُنقِذَ نفسي من عَمايتِها

    فقلتُ فيهِ بعلْمٍ لا بتقليدِ

    And the savior of my soul from its blindness was

    That I spoke of it with knowledge not imitation,

  23. فمن ضميرٍ بصدْقِ القوْلِ مشتملٍ

    ومن لِسانٍ بِحُرّ المدحِ غِرِّيد

    So one whose conscience is characterized by honesty of speech,

    And whose tongue warbles with the art of praise,

  24. ما أجزَلَ اللّهُ ذُخري قبل رؤيتِهِ

    ولا انتَفَعْتُ بإيمانٍ وتوحيد

    God did not stint my provision before seeing him,

    Nor did I benefit from faith and monotheism,

  25. للّهِ منْ سَبَبٍ باللّهِ مُتّصِلٍ

    وظِلِّ عدلٍ على الآفاقِ ممدود

    To God belongs the means connected to God,

    And the shadow of justice spread over the horizons,

  26. هادي رَشادٍ وبُرْهانٍ ومَوعظَةٍ

    وبيِّناتٍ وتوفيقٍ وتسْديد

    A guide of guidance, proof, advice,

    Clarifications, enablement and determination,

  27. ضيِاءُ مظُلمةِ الأيّامِ داجِيَةٍ

    وغيْثُ مُمْحِلَةِ الأكنافِ جارود

    The light of gloomy days brilliantly shining,

    And rain of withered sides heavily pouring,

  28. ترى أعاديه في أيّام دَولتِهِ

    ما لا يرى حاسدٌ في وجهِ محسود

    You see his enemies in the days of his state,

    What no envious one sees in an envied face,

  29. قد حاكمتْهُ ملوكُ الرّوم في لَجِبٍ

    وكانَ للّهِ حكمٌ غيرُ مردود

    The kings of Rome tried him in intensity,

    Yet God's rule cannot be rejected,

  30. إذْ لا ترَى هِبْرزِيّاً غيرَ منعفرٍ

    منهم ولا جاثلِيقاً غيرَ مصفود

    You see no Roman unembellished,

    Among them, nor patriarch unfrocked,

  31. قَضَيْتَ نحبَ العوالي من بطارقهمْ

    وللدّماسِقِ يَوْمٌ جِدُّ مشهود

    You fulfilled the destruction of their elite,

    And for the wicked is a painful witnessed day,

  32. ذَمّوا قَناكَ وقد ثارَتْ أسِنّتُها

    فما تركْنَ وَريداً غيرَ مَورود

    They blamed your spear yet their tongues have rebelled,

    Leaving no artery untouched,

  33. طَعْنٌ يُكوِّرُ هذا في فريصة ذا

    كأنّ في كلّ شِلْوٍ بطنَ ملحود

    A stab that doubles this one over in agony,

    As if in each leather sack lies a filled stomach,

  34. حوَيتَ أسلابَهم من كلّ ذي شُطَبٍ

    ماضٍ ومُطَّرِدِ الكعبَينِ أُملود

    You won their stripped banners from every,

    Continually marching pair of sandals,

  35. وكلِّ درعٍ دِلاصِ المَتن سابغةٍ

    تُطوَى على كل ضافي النسْج مَسرود

    And every coat of mail with interlinked rings,

    Folded over every breastplate of woven mesh,

  36. لم يعلموا أنّ ذاكَ العزمَ مُنصَلِتٌ

    وأنّ تِلكَ المنَايا بالمَراصِيد

    They did not know that the resolve is unwinding,

    And that those deaths are by destiny,

  37. حتّى أتَوْكَ على الأقتابِ من بُهَمٍ

    خُزْرِ العيونِ ومن شُوسٍ مذاويد

    Until they came to you confused and perplexed,

    Blear-eyed and with fractured skulls,

  38. وفوْقَ كلّ قُتودٍ بَزُّ مُستَلَبٍ

    وفوق كل قناةٍ رأسُ صنديد

    And over every leather helmet a stunned hero,

    And over every canal a beheaded head,

  39. توّجتَ منها القنا تيجان ملحمةٍ

    من كل محْلولِ سِلكِ النظمِ معقود

    You crowned the spearheads with epic diadems,

    Made from every unraveled thread of prose,

  40. كأنّها في الذُرَى سُحقٌ مُكَمَّمَةٌ

    من كلّ مخضودِ أعلى الطّلعِ منضود

    As if they are in the earth clotted black blood,

    From every lofty culm cut off at the stem,

  41. سودُ الغدائرِ في بِيضِ الأسِنّةِ في

    حُمْرِ الأنابيبِ من رَدْعٍ وتجسيد

    The black of the calamities in the white of the blades in,

    The red of the tubes of deterrence and determination,

  42. أشهَدتَهم كلَّ فَضْفاض القميص ضحىً

    في سْرجِ كلّ طِمِرّ العدوِ قَيدودِ

    You made them witness every loose shirt at dawn,

    In the saddlebag of every vanquished enemy,

  43. كأنّ أرماحَهم تَتْلو إذا هُزِجَتْ

    زَبورَ داودَ في محْرابِ داود

    As if their spears recite when brandished,

    The Psalms of David in David's prayer niche,

  44. لو كان للرّومِ علْمٌ بالذي لقِيَتْ

    ما هُنّئَتْ أُمُّ بِطريقٍ بمولود

    Had the Romans known what they had faced,

    No mother would have been congratulated for her newborn,

  45. لم يَبقَ في أرْضِ قُسطَنطينَ مُشرِكةٌ

    إلاّ وقد خَصّها ثُكْلٌ بمفقود

    No polytheist was left in Constantine's land,

    Except whom loss has singled out with deprivation,

  46. أرضٌ أقمتَ رَنيناً في مَآتِمِها

    يُغْني الحمائمَ عن سَجعٍ وتغريد

    A land whose calamities you established an echo within,

    Making doves needless of cooing and singing,

  47. كأنّما بادَرَتْ منها ملوكُهُمُ

    مصارعَ القَتل أو جاؤوا لموعود

    As if their kings hastily marched from it,

    To the killing grounds or came for the appointment,

  48. ما كلّ بارقَةٍ في الجوّ صاعقَةٌ

    تُخْشَى ولا كلّ عِفريتٍ بمِرّيد

    A kingdom whose days were past its ancient glory,

    As if never existing through the ages,

  49. ألقى الدُّمُسْتُقُ بالصّلبان حينَ رأى

    ما أنزَلَ اللّهُ من نَصْرٍ وتأييد

    Solve what they determined with resolve,

    And what they tested of schemes,

  50. فقُلْ له حال من دونِ الخليجِ قَناً

    سُمْرٌ وأذرُعُ أبطالٍ مَناجيد

    And they disturbed the sea thousands of shiploads,

    Yet they are the horsemen of its deep darkness,

  51. أهلُ الجِلادِ إذا بانَتْ أكفُّهُمُ

    يَجْمَعْنَ بينَ العَوالي واللّغاديد

    Today their pathways are erased,

    From every sailor of the ship's desired course,

  52. فرْسانُ طَعْنٍ تُؤامٍ في الفرائصِ لا

    يُنمي وضَرْبٍ دراكٍ في القماحيد

    Had you asked them in the sea what they had known,

    Of the ships' navigation in the sailors' channels,

  53. ذا أهرَتٌ كشُدوقِ الأُسد قد رجفتْ

    زأراً وهذا غَموسٌ كالأخاديد

    Their shepherd in every battlefield is,

    The King of Kings and the greatest of chiefs,

  54. أعيا عليه أيرجو أم يخافُ وقد

    رآكَ تُنْجِزُ مِنْ وعدٍ وتوعيدِ

    Who does not wipe away the misery of the oppressed,

    Nor spend the night over the coasts of the anguished,

  55. وقائعٌ كَظَمَتْهُ فانْثنى خَرِساً

    كأنّما كَعَمَتْ فاه بجُلمود

    Of reverence that is feared without remains,

    And wisdom sought without complication,

  56. حَمَيْتَهُ البَرَّ والبَحرَ الفضاءَ معاً

    فما يَمُرّ ببابٍ غيرِ مَسدود

    Of a people whose souls encompass the world,

    While people are between narrowness and coercion,

  57. يرى ثُغورَكَ كالعَينِ التي سَلِمَتْ

    بين المَرَوراتِ منها والقَراديد

    If their chests were laid bare in the horizons before you,

    They would close off with destruction the gaps of destruction,

  58. يا رُبّ فارعةِ الأجبالِ راسِيَةٍ

    منها وشاهقةِ الأكنافِ صَيخود

    Those people, if all counted together,

    And whoever is other is superfluous and uncounted,

  59. دَنا ليمنَعَ رُكْنَيْها بغاربِهِ

    فباتَ يَدعَمُ مهدوداً بمهدود

    The difference between people collectively and them,

    Is like the difference between nonexistence and existence,

  60. قد كانتِ الرّومُ محذوراً كتائبُها

    تُدْني البلادَ على شَحْطٍ وتبْعيد

    If the door of generosity has a frequented and closed entrance,

    You extend towards it every hand,

  61. ملْكٌ تأخّرَ عهدُ الرّومِ من قِدَمٍ

    عنه كأن لم يكن دهراً بمعهود

    As if your forbearance established the earth or you have,

    Tied with it the ends of the earth's towering pillars,

  62. حُلّ الذي أحكموه في العزائم منْ

    عَقْدٍ وما جرّبوه في المكائيد

    For you are bounties, the first of them and the last of them,

    A gift of God, a gift without limits,

  63. وشاغَبوا اليَمَّ ألفَيْ حِجّةٍ كَمَلاً

    وهم فوارسُ قاريّاتِهِ السُّود

    So you exemplified what is in generosity of lasting ideal,

    And impact amongst people commended,

  64. فاليوْمَ قد طُمِستْ فيه مسالكُهم

    من كلّ لاحبِ نَهْجِ الفُلْكِ مقصود

    If fate immortalized the Honored One for his honor,

    You are the most deserving of housing and eternity,

  65. لو كنتَ سائلَهُم في اليَمّ ما عَرَفُوا

    سُفْعَ السّفائن من عُفْرِ الملاحيد

    Bounty perishes and traces of bounty, and nothing,

    Increases in every era except renewal,

  66. هَيهاتَ راعَهُمُ في كلّ مُعْتَرَكٍ

    مَلْكُ الملوكِ وصِنديدُ الصّناديد

  67. مَن ليس يمسَحُ عن عِرنينِ مُضْطهَدٍ

    ولا يَبيتُ على أحناءِ مَفؤود

  68. ذو هيبةٍ تُتّقَى من غيرِ بائقةٍ

    وحِكمةٍ تُجْتَنى من غيرِ تعقيد

  69. من مَعشرٍ تَسَعُ الدنيا نفوسهُمُ

    والناسُ ما بينَ تضييقٍ وتنكيد

  70. لو أصْحرُوا في فضاءٍ من صُدورهِمُ

    سَدّوا عليكَ فُروجَ البِيدِ بالبِيد

  71. أولئك الناسُ إن عُدّوا بأجمعِهِمْ

    ومَن سواهم فَلَغْوٌ غيرُ معدود

  72. والفرقُ بين الوَرَى جمْعاً وبينَهُمُ

    كالفرْقِ ما بينَ مَعدومٍ وموجود

  73. إن كانَ للجودِ بابٌ مُرْتَجٌ غُلُقٌ

    فأنت تدني إليه كلّ إقليد

  74. كأنّ حلمك أرسى الأرض أو عقدت

    بهِ نَواصي ذُرَى أعْلامِها القُودِ

  75. لكَ المَواهبُ أُولاها وآخرُها

    عَطاءُ رَبٍّ عَطاءٌ غيرُ مجدودِ

  76. فأنتَ سَيّرْتَ ما في الجُودِ من مثَلٍ

    باقٍ ومن أثَرٍ في النّاسِ محمودِ

  77. لو خَلّدَ الدّهرُ ذا عزّ لعِزّتِهِ

    كنتَ الأحَقَّ بتَعميرٍ وتَخليدِ

  78. تَبلى الكرامُ وآثارُ الكرامِ وما

    تَزدادُ في كلّ عَصرٍ غيرَ تجديدِ
