كَيفَ نَومي وَقَد حَلَلتُ بِبَغدا
دَ مُقيماً في أَرضِها لا أَريمُ
How can I sleep when I have settled in Baghdad
Remaining in its land without rest
بِبِلادٍ فيها الرَكايا عَلَيهِن
نَ كَاللَيلِ مِن بَعوضٍ تَحومُ
In a country where the lakes upon it
Are like the night with mosquitoes swarming
جَوُّها وَالشِتاءُ وَالصَيفُ وَالفَص
لُ دُخانٌ وَمائُها يَحمومُ
Its weather, winter, summer and spring
Are smoke and its water scalding
