أَتَتنِيَ دِجلَةُ فيما أَتَت
فَما يَصنَعُ البَحرُ ما تَصنَعُ
The Tigris came to me as it came
What can the sea do that you can do?
فَكَم مِن جِدارٍ لَنا مائِلٍ
وَآخَرَ يَسجُدُ أَو يَركَعُ
How many walls do we have leaning
And others bow or kneel
وَيُمطِرُنا السَقفُ مِن بَينِنا
وَمِن تَحتِنا أَعيُنٌ تَنبُعُ
The ceiling rains on us between us
And beneath us eyes well up
وَأَصبَحَ بُستانُنا جَوبَةً
يُسَبِّحُ في مائِها الضِفدَعُ
Our orchard has become marshes
Where frogs praise in its waters
