أَلا رُبَّ يَومٍ لي قَصيرٍ نَهارُهُ
كَسَلَّةِ سَيفٍ أَو كَرَجمَةِ كَوكَبِ
Ah, many a day I have known whose daylight was brief—
brief as the drawing of a sword, or the flight of a shooting star.
نَعِمتُ بِهِ في فِتيَةٍ أَيِّ فِتيَةٍ
دِراعٍ إِلى الداعي بِأَفديكَ بِالأَبِ
I delighted in it among youths—what youths they were!
swift to answer a call with, “My father be your ransom!”
