وَلَيلٍ قَد سَهِرتُ وَنامَ فيهِ
نَدامى صُرِّعوا حَولي رُقودا
And a night in which I was sleepless
While my boon companions lay sprawled around in slumber
أُسامِرُ فيهِ قَهقَهَةَ القَناني
وَمِزماراً يُحَدِّثُني وَعودا
I sipped from the glass the song of the lutes
And a pipe spoke to me of longing
يَكادُ اللَيلَ يَرجُمُني بِنِجمٍ
وَقالَ أَراهُ شَيطاناً مَريدا
Until the night well nigh pelted me with stars
And taunted: “I espy thee, a rebel demon!”
