رَأَيتُهُ يَتَمَشّى مُتعَباً ضَجِراً
كَمِثلِ غُصنِ نَقاً في الرَوضِ أُملودِ
I saw him walking along, weary and vexed,
like a supple bough on a sandhill in the garden.
لَيتَ الغُبارَ الَّذي يُؤذيهِ لي كُحلٌ
وَلَيتَني جارُهُ في زَحمَةِ العيدِ
If only the dust that troubles him were kohl for my eyes;
and if only I were beside him in the Eid throng.
