فَكَيفَ بِها لا الدارُ عَنها قَريبَةٌ

وَلا أَنتَ عَنها آخِرَ الدَهرِ صابِرُ

How can it be, when neither home is near her,

Nor you, till end of time, have patience for her?

أَبِن لي فَقَد بانَت بِها مُدَّةُ النَوى

أَأَنتَ عَلى شَيءٍ سِوى الهَمِّ قادِرُ

Explain to me, for time's intention is revealed -

Have you any power but grief and sorrow?

نَعَم أَن يَزولَ القَلبُ عَن مُستَقَرِّهِ

خُفوقاً وَتَنهَلَّ الدُموعُ البَوادِرُ

Yes, for the heart to leave its resting place,

Beating, as tears in torrents pour their flood,

وَأَحيا حَياةً بَعدَ سَلمى مَريضَةً

لَها عاذِلٌ في حُبِّ سَلمى وَعاذِرُ

And I might live again when Salma's ill,

With blamer for loving Salma, and reproacher.

أَلا يا عِبادَ اللَهِ هَذا أَخوكُمُ

قَتيلٌ فَهَل مِنكُم لَهُ اليَومَ ثائِرُ

O servants of God, this is your brother,

Slain - is there among you today an avenger?
