أَرَدتُ الشُربَ في القَمَرِ

وَقَطعَ اللَيلِ بِالسَهَرِ

I wanted to drink from the moon

And stay up late cutting through the night

وَقَد جَمَّعتُ ما يُلهي

فَلَم أَترُك وَلَم أَذَرِ

I gathered all that would distract me

Yet I let nothing slip or scatter

فَدَبَّ الغَيمُ مُعتَمِداً

فَأَخفاهُ عَنِ النَظَرِ

The clouds crept in steadily

Concealing it from sight

فَبِتُّ أَفورُ مِن غَضَبٍ

عَلى الأَحداثِ وَالغِيَرِ

I seethe with anger

At fate and others

وَجاءَ إِلَيَّ شَيطاني

يُحَرِّشُني عَلى القَدَرِ

My devil came to me

Inciting me against destiny

وَحاوَلَ كَفرَةً مِنّي

وَجَرَّأَني عَلى سَقَرِ

And tempted blasphemy from me

And emboldened me against Hell

فَقامَ العَقلُ يُطفِئُ عَن

فُؤادي جَمرَةَ الضَجَرِ

Reason rose up, extinguishing

The embers of irritation in my heart

وَوَلّى آيِساً مِنّي

وَفِزتُ عَلَيهِ بِالظَفَرِ

And left disappointed with me

As I triumphed over it

وَوَكَّلَ بي تَلامِذَةً

فَأَسقوني إِلى السَحَرِ

It assigned disciples to me

Who kept me intoxicated till dawn

وَأَبدَوا لي مَليحَ الوَج

هِ مَنقوشاً مِنَ الشَرَرِ

And showed me the beautiful face

Engraved with embers

تَمَرَّنَ في الهَوى وَبَدا

وَحَلَّ مَخانِقَ الصُوَرِ

It flourished in passion and appeared

And untied the shackles of images

فَما يَأتي عَلى طَلَبٍ

وَلا يَعصي مِنَ الحَصَرِ

So nothing comes searching

Nor disobeys being confined

وَأَغرَوني فَكانَ إِلَي

هِ ما قَد كانَ في سَكَري

And they seduced me, so to me came

What had come in my intoxication

فَلَمّا أَصبَحوا طاروا

إِلى إِبليسَ بِالخَبَرِ

When dawn broke, they flew

To Iblis with the news
