يقُولونَ لي أنَّ الفِراقَ مُكرَّهٌ
فقلتُ لأهل العشْقِ لا تَكْرَهُونَهُ
They tell me that parting is a hateful thing;
So I told the devotees of love: “Do not hate it.”
فقالوا وما فيهِ من النَّفْعِ يُرْتَجى
فقلت المُعَنَّى فيه تُقْضَى دُيونَهُ
They asked, “What benefit can one hope for in it?”
I said, “Through it, the love-tormented one has his debts discharged:
يَفُوزُ بِتَوْدِيعٍ إذا ما تَحَمَّلوا
وإنْ قَدِمُوا في الحالِ زادوا شجونَهُ
He gains a farewell when they load up to depart,
And if they return, they at once deepen his sorrows.”
