Listen, oh Yahya's son, to my words

If you stand to hear them spoken

Do not praise yourself, glorifying your soul

For a youth praising himself is of no use

And do not claim superiority over Salim's son

That would be better than you, more pure and brave

While he is an extinguisher of praises, a collector

And his manners in the face of blame repel

A lion and a gazelle are not equal in action

Nor are honey and oleander equal in poison

You have missed faith, and sword, and bending rainclouds

Wearing black, blame patched over you

Suleiman sought progeny by his sword

As did He of Two Days or Tubba`

Their renown in history like the sun's light

And their memory established till Resurrection

While you are a boastful braggart

And the habit of the arrogant is no mark of courage

    You're a coward in wars, a hoarder

Of money, while honor from you is borrowed

In the Rus lands your name is notorious

You fled and the sword of the 'Ureyka did not shine

Be like the son of Jawfal in the most desolate place

For you are from the blood of fleeing cowards

You're just a ruin after yet another ruin

But this age raises up the ape

Have patience - nights are sometimes gloomy

And tomorrow a poisoned arrow may pierce you

Bayyin lengthens his grieving wail at the center of your houses

Emptied of him, they are dusty and desolate
