1. أجابَهُ مُذْ دَعَا بُتْرٌ ومُرَّانُ

    والسَّعْدُ والنَّصْرُ بالأفراسِ تِيْجَانُ

    Butr and Murran answered his call,

    Victory and success adorn their steeds like crowns.

  2. قد جاءَ يَسْحبُ أذيالَ الدُروعِ ضحى

    إلى الوغى وهو عَنْدَ الطَعْنِ غَضْبانُ

    He came at dawn, dragging the trains of armor,

    Angry for battle and the thrust of lances.

  3. هذا سعيدُ بن سلطان الذي سَجَدَتْ

    لهُ منَ الخَصْمِ هاماتٌ وأذْقَانُ

    This is Sa'eed bin Sultan, before whom

    The skulls of foes bowed down in surrender.

  4. ذَمْرٌ تَخَافُ العِدا من فَتْكِ صارِمه

    كما يَخَافْ شِهابَ القَذْفِ شَيْطانُ

    A piercing blade the enemies feared so,

    As devils fear the falling stars up yonder.

  5. إنْ هَزَّ فوقَ المذاكي كَعْبَ حَرْبَتِهِ

    تَنَافَرَتْ منْهُ شُجْعانٌ وأقْرَانُ

    When he shook his sword above the fray,

    Brave warriors trembled and fell asunder.

  6. قَنَاته تَنْثَنِي سَكْرانةً عَلَقَا

    كما تَمَايَل في بُرْدَيْهِ نَشْوانُ

    His spear made drunk, bent over in its scabbard,

    As date palms sway when the wine makes them blunder.

  7. خافتْ نجومُ السَما مِنهُ وبانَ لها

    نَحْوَ المَغَاربِ إخْفَاءٌ وطَيْرَانُ

    The stars of heaven feared him and it seemed

    Westward they fled to hide in wonder.

  8. تَهَزْهَزَتْ مِنْهُ أرضُ اللهِ خائِفَةً

    إذا اعتلى مِنْهُ في الهَيْجاءِ هَيْجانُ

    Allah's earth shook in fear under his tread,

    When to rouse his warriors was his thunder.

  9. أسيافُهُ الحُمْرُ في الهاماتِ مُغْمَدَةٌ

    لها في الضَرْبِ اسْجاعٌ وألْحانُ

    His red swords sheathed after the skulls they cleft,

    Melodies of death their every blow did plunder.

  10. وخَيْلُهُ بِعَجَاجِ الحَرْبِ مُدْرَعةٌ

    كأنَّهُنَّ على الآفاقِ عُقْبانُ

    His steeds armed for war, they flew like hawks,

    Wheeling through the skies in their red armor.

  11. وللنجيعِ احمرارٌ في سَنَابكِها

    لها على الفَلكِ الدَوَّارِ دَوْرَانُ

    Their neighing at night shook the celestial spheres,

    Set them spinning, whirling without number.

  12. كأن رايتهُ من حِينِ ما حُمِلَتْ

    نَحْوَ القِتَالِ بها للفَتْحِ عُنوانُ

    When his banner rose, called his troops to ride

    To victory, no power could it sunder.

  13. تسيرُ من تحتِها الجُلاّءُ حاسرةً

    وُجُوهُهم والمواضي فَهْي سِيَّانُ

    Beneath it warriors marched, their faces bright,

    Plain and mountain leveled, none asunder.

  14. عِصَابَةٌ رَقَلوا في المَجْدِ واعْتَصِمُوا

    بِحَبْلِ خَالقِهم طُرَّاً وما خَانُوا

    Stalwarts, seasoned in glory, held to their faith

    Fast as rope; they never wavered nor blundered.

  15. أميرُهم سيّدٌ فاق الورى شَرَفاً

    قد مات من اسمِه شِرْكٌ وطُغْيانُ

    Their prince excelled all in nobility,

    Dead to him were rivals, false gods a wonder.

  16. ولو نَبِيّ بهذا الدَّهْرِ قِيْلَ لنا

    يأتي فَفِيْهِ دَلالات وبُرهانُ

    Had a prophet said, "One shall come to you

    Signs and proofs," it could be none but Sultan.

  17. مِنْ عَدْلِهِ في الرَّعايا تَرْقُصَنَّ على

    أيدي الأجنةِ حَيّاتٌ وَغِيلانُ

    For his grace, serpents danced in infants' hands,

    All creation thrived on his care and thunder.

  18. هذا فتى من ميادين العُلا رقلت

    به الرماكُ ولم يَغْلِبْها مَيْدانُ

    But for him no virtue had been known,

    Glory unnamed for Tayy or Khatan.

  19. قالَ القوابلُ قولاً عندَ مولدِهِ

    هذا أميرٌ ومِطْعَامٌ ومِطْعانُ

    Had Zuhair in this age raised his lyre,

    He'd praise none but Abs and Dhubyan in his numbers.

  20. هذا هو المَدْرَةُ السامي الذي اجتمعت

    ببطن

    Most eloquent his speech, none can match his tongue,

    Not the finest words of Kuss or Sahan.

  21. مَلْك تَكَفَّل أرزاقَ العيالِ وقَدْ

    عَمَّ الخلائِقَ من كَفَّيه إحسانُ

    Had he lived before in ancient days,

    None would boast of former times nor their wonders.

  22. لولاه ما عُرِفَ الجدوى ولا ذُكِرتْ

    بالجود طيّ ولا بالفخْرِ قَحْطانُ

    Fortune sides with him, the stars his allies

    In his every endeavor and adventure.

  23. ولو زُهَيْرٌ بِهذا العَصْرِ ما مُدِحَتْ

    بنَظْمِ أشْعارِهِ عَبْسٌ وذُبْيانُ

    Whenever foes connived and broke allegiance,

    His swords pierced them, held fast in every encounter.

  24. فَصيحُ قَوْلٍ ولا في النُطقِ شاكلَهُ

    بما يَفُوهُ به قُسّ وسَحْبَانُ

    Scattered like sheep a shepherd with his crook

    Drives across the desert sands asunder.

  25. لو كانَ في سالفِ الاعصارِ مستوياً

    فلم يكن للأولى اسمٌ ولا كانوا

    Prey for beasts and birds their bodies lay,

    None survived, none buried, none to mourn or wonder.

  26. وقد تُساعِده الأقدارُ راغبةً

    فيما يحاولُ والأفلاكُ أعْوانُ

    No steed or plunder could avail them now,

    No fortress left to shield them from his thunder.

  27. يُدَبِّرُ المُلْكَ تَدْبيراً متى ظَهَرَتْ

    من الأعادي مكيداتٌ وعِصيْانُ

    When their deeds were wicked, ruin befell them,

    Loss and shame enveloped them in numbers.

  28. أذاقَهم ضَرْبُ أسيافٍ يَدِبُّ على

    مُتُونِها النَّمْلُ لم تُمْسِكْها أجفانُ

    Little did they know a king ruled over them,

    Holding in his grasp their fate asunder.

  29. تَفَرَّقُوا مِثْلَ أغْنامٍ يَذُودُ بها

    في سَرْحِها بفَيافي القَفْرِ سِرْحانُ

    Live forever mighty Sultan, unique in glory!

    Through all time you reign, our shield and thunder.

  30. صاروا طعامَ سباعٍ والطيورِ معاً

    ولم تَبِنْ لَهُمُ أمْعَا وجُثْمَانُ

  31. وليسَ يَنْفَعُهم خيلٌ ولا سَلَبٌ

    عَنْهُ ولم يحْمِهم حِصْن وبُنْيانُ

  32. وهم مُحِقُّون إذا أفْعالهم قَبُحتْ

    وقد أحاطَ بهم ذُلّ ونُقْصانُ

  33. وما دَرَوا أن هاذ فَوْقَهم مَلِكٌ

    في كَفِّهِ الدَّهْرُ مَقْبوضٌ وحَيْرانُ

  34. دُمْ يا أميرَ الورى بالعزِّ مُنفَرِداً

    وأنتَ فينا مدى الأزمانِ سُلْطانُ
