And I am ashamed that my companions should see
the spot my hand has cleared bare beside the provisions.
I hold my hand back from reaching theirs
when we reach in together, our needs all alike.
For whatever you grant your belly of its craving—
and your loins—the pair reap the utmost blame.
I spend the night hollow-bellied, my innards drawn tight,
out of shame: I fear reproach if I should eat my fill.
