1. O eye, pour forth your tears in streaming floods;

    never weary of their copious flow and loud lament.

  2. You two, do not withhold your tears from me after this day:

    I am bereaved, and not one whose grief fades into consolation.

  3. For the withholding by you two, after your free outpouring,

    from me is like what befalls one deceived by a mirage.

  4. Rather, pour down upon my breast in fourfold streams;

    for within these ribs a raging anguish assails—

  5. the copious gush of a waterskin, and water from the great well-bucket, bestowed

    by one water-drawer and borne by another, bucketful after bucketful—

  6. for a Messenger of ours, pure in all his wellsprings,

    generous by nature, chaste, never rashly ignorant;

  7. defender of honor, swift through the blazing noon, a releas—

    —er of captives, noble, glorious, exalted;

  8. ever winning noble deeds, lavishly feeding others in famine,

    giver of a prized ʿĪdī she-camel, broad-cheeked and fleet;

  9. pure were his earnings, abundant his gifts—

    the best of creation, generous, never one to shrink back;

  10. kindler of the firesticks, leader of thoroughbred steeds into

    the day of mounted pursuit, when war is kindled with great logs.

  11. Nor do I vouch before the All-Merciful for any mortal;

    but your true worth is known to the One, the Most High.

  12. I see Time and the passing days bereaving me

    of the righteous, while I remain tranquil at heart.

  13. O eye, weep for God’s Messenger whenever mention is made of

    God’s very Being—how excellent the one who stood forth, the guardian!
