May God, Lord of mankind, grant His finest reward
to the two companions who rested at Umm Ma‘bad’s two tents.
They alighted there bearing true guidance, and through it she found guidance;
for whoever comes to be Muhammad’s companion has surely triumphed.
Alas, clan of Qusay, what God has taken from you
with him—what matchless glory and lordly eminence!
May Banu Ka‘b rejoice in the dwelling-place of their daughter,
and her abode is a watch-post for the believers.
Ask your sister about her ewe and her vessel;
for if you ask the ewe herself, she will bear witness.
He asked her for a barren, dry ewe—and it yielded milk
for him: pure milk from the ewe’s udder, all afoam.
So he left it in her keeping, a pledge for every milker
who drives her to and fro, at each departure from water and then each return to the watering-place.
