اللُؤمُ خَيرٌ مِن ثَقيفٍ كُلِّها
حَسَباً وَما يَفعَل لَئيمٌ تَفعَلِ
Baseness is better than all of Thaqīf
in lineage; whatever a lowborn man does, Thaqīf does too.
وَبَنى المَليكُ مِنَ المَخازي فَوقَهُم
بَيتاً أَقامَ عَلَيهِمِ لَم يُنقَلِ
And the Sovereign built above them, out of infamies,
a house He set over them, never to be moved.
إِن هُم أَقاموا حَلَّ فَوقَ رِقابِهِم
أَبَداً وَإِن يَتَحَوَّلوا يَتَحَوَّلِ
If they remain, it settles upon their necks
forever; and if they move, it moves with them.
قَومٌ إِذا ما صيحَ في حُجُراتِهِم
لاقَوا بِأَنذالٍ تَنابِلَ عُزَّلِ
A people who, when a cry rings through their dwellings,
meet it with baseborn, sluggish oafs, unarmed.
