What ails your eye, that its tears will not cease,
pouring upon your breast like restless pearls?
For Khubayb, whose death was for the All-Merciful—
neither one to falter when you met him, nor rash.
Go forth, Khubayb; may God reward you with a goodly reward,
and the eternal Garden, among the houris in gentle fellowship.
What will you say if the Prophet says to you,
while the righteous angels stand upon the horizon:
Why did you kill God’s martyr for the sake of a man—
a tyrant who had pressed through lands and roads?
Abu Ihab, then tell me plainly of your affair:
where is the gazelle adorned with pearls and silver?
Never mention, when you are boasting,
Abu Kutaybah; you have gone too far in folly—
nor Aziz, for treachery is a dishonor;
Aziz is petty in spirit and character.
