1. O Hārith, you put your trust in what could not be trusted,

    amid battle’s tumult, at the hour when honor is put to proof;

  2. when you mounted a high-bred she-camel, free in both forelegs,

    long-striding in her course, light about the flanks.

  3. The warriors were behind you: you had abandoned the fight against them,

    hoping for escape—but it was no time for flight.

  4. Why did you not turn back to your brother when he lay fallen,

    beaten down by spearpoints, his armor abandoned as spoil?

  5. A formidable, grim-faced man—by your life! Had the like befallen you,

    he would surely have come to you, flat-snouted, with interlocking fangs.

  6. The Sovereign hastened against him and destroyed his host

    with humiliating disgrace and grievous torment.

  7. Had you been the offspring of a noble woman, you would have honored her

    with noble service; but you are the offspring of an eagle’s daughter.
