1. O tidings that have rung out among us: “Homeland!”

    Whoever does his duty betrays the homeland;

  2. Sinnimār’s reward is the share allotted him,

    that he may be a warning through the ages.

  3. But whoever casts duty aside

    receives, along with honor, a handsome reward.

  4. A maxim our people have laid down,

    to complete affliction’s many synonyms.

  5. And the supreme, overseeing Council holds sway over

    whoever is ill-starred and gives voice to suspicions.

  6. It is the one that decides his case,

    and its approved judgment shall surely prevail.

  7. And this is among the sum of our calamities:

    a court of judgment, trusted among mortals.

  8. The least chastisement it metes out to one

    whom it knows to have shown it less devotion

  9. is perpetual banishment from a post

    in which he had rendered mighty services.

  10. Whoever comes before it as a benefactor, it wrongs;

    and whoever comes before it as a criminal, it treats gently.
