أَضَعتُ شَبابي وَمالي سُدىً
عَلى حُبِّ ظَبيٍ بَديعَ الجَمالِ
I squandered my youth and wealth in vain,
for love of a gazelle of exquisite beauty,
لَكَيلا يَميلَ لِغَيري هَوىً
فَضاعَ شَبابٌ عَلَيهِ وَمالِ
lest my love turn toward anyone but me;
thus both were lost—my youth spent on him, and my wealth.
