Your affection pleases me with a glance,

Though fleeting, it appears without a smile.

No blamer knows, nor am I saying,

You fear no blame for blame’s reproach.

So be blithe of eye from such acceptance,

Though my heart roils with discontent.

One said, though the censurers knew not my state,

Where is the heedless mind from the state of love?

Can you not desist from a lover’s madness?

Do lovers reap aught but long-suffering?

I said, “Leave me to passion’s harvest,

For in their pleasure lies my sweet torment.”

My heart suffices to rave with their love,

And seeing them in dreams and fantasies suffices me.

Often a union is attained unhoped for

    After long estrangement and privation.

Its bliss restores life to my soul

With kisses, sips, cheeks and smile.

That is the feast day, reproachers,

When you bite your fingers in regret.

I drink ease from it poured as light

In a crystal cup tied with vine.

A frolicking gazelle shares it with me

Till I see the sweet dimple of her smile.

Her bright teeth almost arouse it

Like rays by the cup nearing her mouth.
