1. أديتَ واجبكَ المقدَّسَ كاملاً

    وتركتَ للأجيالِ ذكركَ شاغلا

    You have fulfilled your sacred duty completely

    And left generations preoccupied with your memory

  2. مهلاً أبا الأحرار مهلاً إن تكن

    أعمارُ مثلك كالشموسِ مراحلا

    Wait O father of the free, wait, if the lives

    Of the likes of you are like suns with stages

  3. إنَّا بنى الأرضِ الذين شقاؤهم

    باقٍ نودِّعُ فيكَ ظلاًّ راحلا

    We the people of the earth whose misery

    Remains, bid you farewell, O fleeting shade

  4. كنا نَفئُ إليكَ في آلامنا

    ونرى رجاحَتكَ الملاذَ الكاملا

    We used to take refuge in you during our pains

    And see your competence as the perfect asylum

  5. والآنَ واحتنا الفسيحةُ أصبحت

    حُلماً وعانقت الفناءَ الهائلا

    And now, vast wildernesses have become

    A dream, and embraced the immense annihilation

  6. كَم كان خصمك خاذلاً ليقينه

    وأبيتَ أن تلفىَ لخصمك خاذلا

    How weak your opponent was in his conviction

    Yet you refused to be submissive to your weak opponent

  7. ولكم أغثتَ من الكوارث جاحداً

    وفككت مغلولاً فراحَ مُخاتلا

    And how much you saved from disasters ungratefully

    And freed the shackled, so he went astray

  8. ولكم رددتَ من السهامِ مكافحاً

    ولكم غَضضتَ عن العداءِ مُجاملا

    And how many arrows you deflected fighting

    And how much enmity you overlooked conciliating

  9. وعُرفتَ في الحالينِ أكرمَ كَيسٍ

    نسىَ الإساءةَ بل أقالَ الجاهلا

    And you were known in both situations as the most generous wise man

    Who forgot harm, rather pardoned the ignorant

  10. قد بحَّ صوتُك هادياً ومنادياً

    أمماً بنكبتها تُطيعُ الهازلا

    Your voice rang out guiding and calling

    Nations in their defeat obeying the fickle

  11. وإذا تيقَّظَ أى شعبٍ ببنها

    ألفيته الأسرَ المسئَ الغافلا

    And if any nation woke up alive

    You found it chained, heedless and oblivious

  12. يا ليتها في الرُّزءِ تدفن عجزَها

    شمماً وتدفنُ ذلةً وسلاسلا

    I wish it would bury its weakness in the calamity

    Thirstily, and bury humiliation and chains

  13. صورٌ تزاحمَ رسمها في عبرتَيِ

    لما أتيتك راثياً ومُسائلا

    Images crowd to depict in my sadness

    When I came to you eulogizing and questioning

  14. يا ضيعةَ الإنسانِ في استعلائه

    وكأنما بالمجدِ أصبحَ زائلا

    O loss of man in his arrogance

    As if glory had become fleeting

  15. ولقد بَحثتُ فما غَنمتُ حقيقةً

    ودفنتُ آمالي وعشتُ الثَّاكلا

    And I searched but gained no truth

    And buried my hopes and lived apathetically

  16. وسَخرتُ من علمي ومن أدبي معاً

    وأبيتُ أن أُدعى الحكيمَ العاقلا

    And I mocked my knowledge and manners alike

    And refused to be called the wise and reasonable

  17. وظللتُ يقذفني الخضم بموجهِ

    من بعدِ ما أبصرتُ فيك الساحلا

    And I remained as the masses tossed me in its waves

    After I saw the shore in you

  18. ولو ان إنشادى الدماءُ لشاعرٍ

    حملَ الجراح ولم يزل مُتفائلا

    And if my chanting were the blood of a poet

    Who bore wounds and remained optimistic

  19. أبداً يصارعُ عقلهُ وجدَنهُ

    ويَرىَ الوجودَ مآسياً ومهازلا

    Forever wrestling his mind and body

    And sees existence as tragedies and tribulations

  20. ويرى مماتَ النابهينَ جريمةً

    مهما تُسَّوغَ والقضاءَ القاتلا

    And sees the death of the eminent as a crime

    No matter how justified and fatal destiny

  21. أرقد صديقي في خلودك وَحدهُ

    إن لم نَجد نحنُ الخلودَ الشاملا

    Sleep my friend in your solitude alone

    If we cannot find the all-encompassing eternity

  22. أرقد فحسبك ما حَملت من الأذَى

    وداع الممات يُميتُ داءكَ عاجلا

    Sleep, for it is enough what you bore of torment

    And death's farewell kills your affliction soon

  23. فلقد خلقتَ بما صنعتَ مآثراً

    ملءَ البيانِ خوالداً وحوافلا

    For you have created with what you did achievements

    Filling eloquence, undying and in multitudes

  24. لو يعرف الطِّبُ الصَّناعُ وسيلةً

    لأعَادَ صوتك بالمواعظِ حافلا

    If medicine knew the way

    It would restore your voice in preaching abundantly

  25. أو يَعلمُ الجراحُ أىَّ يتيمةٍ

    قُطعت لدامَ من الفجيعةِ ذاهلا

    Or the surgeon knew which orphan

    Was cut off, stunned from the immense grief

  26. عانى وعالجَ والمماتُ مرفرف يقظ

    يُخيِّبُ آسياً أو حائلا

    He suffered and cured, and death fluttered awake

    Frustrating the desperate or the reckless

  27. لبنانُ لم يبرح بذكرك شامخاً

    ويظل معتزاً بفكركَ طائلا

    Lebanon never ceased to proudly remember you

    And will remain proud of your formidable thought

  28. جَبلٌ من الفكرِ الأصيلِ جيوشه

    زحفت بمثلكَ كالغزاةِ جحافلا

    A mountain of original thought, its armies

    Marched with the likes of you in masses

  29. إن تنسكَ الدنيا ولن تنسى فقد

    أحيالكَ الأرزَ الوضئَ مشاعلا

    If the world forgets you, the cedar will not forget

    For it made you its glowing torches

  30. أهلَ الهدى صُونوا تُراثا للهدَى

    فخماً وذودوا عن عُلاَها الباطلا

    The people of guidance preserved the heritage of guidance

    Splendidly, and warded off its falsehood

  31. عاشت لكم ذُخراً ومجداً صائلا

    فابنوا لها ذُخراً ومجداً صائلا

    It lived for you as lasting wealth and glory

    So build for it lasting wealth and glory

  32. وإذا مضى علمٌ فأحيوا ذكرهُ

    علماً تناسخَ نورهُ متواصِلا

    And when knowledge passes, revive its memory

    As knowledge eternally transmitting its light
