وَلا تَشكُ مِن خَطبٍ أَلَم إِلى فَتى

فايِ فَتى حَرٍّ لِشكواكَ يَسمَعُ

Do not complain of affliction to a free man

For what free man would listen to your complaints?

فَكُن شاكِراً عِندَ الشَدائِدِ كُلِّها

وَكُن صابِراً فَالصَبرُ لِلحُرِّ أَنفَعُ

Be grateful in all adversities

And be patient, for patience is best for the free.

فَما مِن فَتى تَلقى بِهِ مِن مَروءَةٍ

إِذا لَم يَكُن مِنكَالجَزا يَتَوَقَّعُ

No man of honor meets you with nobility

Unless he expects reward from you.

لَقَد ذَهَبَ الناسُ الكِرامُ فَلا اِمرِؤٌ

يواسيكَ وَيُسَلّيكَ أَو يَتَرَجَّعُ

The generous people are gone, and no gentleman

Will console you, comfort you, or care for you.
