لا زلت يا ربع الشباب حميدا — Haidar Alheli

لا زلتَ يا ربع الشباب حميدا
باقٍ وإن خلقَ الزمانُ جديدا
You still shine, O youth, glorious
Staying though time creates anew
ما أنتَ للعشاق إلاَّ جنَّةٌ
صحبوا بها العيشَ القديمَ رغيدا
You are to lovers nothing but bliss
With which they lived happy days of old
أيام كانَ العيشُ غضاً ناعماً
والدهر مقتبل الشباب وليدا
Days when life was soft and tender
And time kissed youth yet young
والدار طيِّبة الثرى مما بها
يسحبنَ ربّات الخدور برودا
The abode was fragrant soil where
The beauties trailing gowns would sweep
يستاف زائرُها ثراها عنبراً
فيكذِّبَن طرفاً يراه صعيدا
A guest inhales its oak essence
As their eyes deny seeing dust
يعطو إلى عذبات فرع أراكةٍ
ظبيٌّ تفيأ ظلَّها الممدودا
They offer the deer sheltering beneath
The shade of an arÃ¡kah’s tender branch
غنجٌ يسلُّ من اللواحظ مرهفاً
يغدو عليه قتيله محسودا
A gazelle freed of the anxious glances
Killed by its beauty though envied
هو مُنتضىً في الجفن إلاَّ أنه
بين الجوانح يغتدي مغمودا
Delighted to the eyes but in the heart
Suppressed though glad at heart
أضحت ضرائبه القلوب تعدّ أد
ما هابه وهو الشقيُّ سعيدا
Hearts now count his calamities but
Did not fear him happy though wretched
وشقيقُ خديه النقيُّ من الحيا
أضحى بعقرب صدغه مرصودا
The bright cheeks stained with beauty spots
Now have scorpion stings to note
يمسي سليماً يشتفي بالريق مَن
باللثم بات بقطفه معمودا
One who wakes safe tasting saliva
Was baptised in its gathering at eve
كم بتُّ معتنقاً له في ليلةٍ
بات العفاف بها عليَّ شهيدا
How oft have I embraced it a night
When my chastity died witnessing
وكأنما في الأفق هالةُ بدرها
وبها الكواكب قد طلعنَ سعودا
In the horizon its crescent’s halo
The stars rose in good augury
نادٍ محمدُ حلَّ فيه وولده
بعلاه حفَّت ناشئاً ووليدا
Muhammad called, so he and his son
In its high minaret were lodged
هو دارةُ الشرف التي قد مهَّدتْ
أبد الزمان بعزِّهم تمهيدا
It is the badge of glory that paved
Eternity with their honour smooth
فرشوا بساحة أرضه القمرين وات
كأوا على زهر النجوم قعودا
They furnished its courtyards with two moons
As if sitting flowers midst stars
متعاقدين على المكارم أحرزوا
شرفاً تماثل طارفاً وتليدا
United in virtues taking such pride
Matching old with new in report
وعليهمُ قطباً فقطباً دائرٌ
فلكُ الفخار أبوَّة وجدودا
Over them each pole revolving
The heavens pride lineage and grace
كانوا قديماً والعلى صدفٌ لهم
دراً تناسق في الفخار نضيدا
They were of yore when glory but shells
Scattered pearls in ordered rows
وأبوهم البحرُ المحيط وقد بدوا
منه على جيد الزمان عقودا
Their ancestor is the endless sea having come
As time’s necklaces heavy set
هو لجَّة المعروف ما عرفتْ بنو ال
دنيا سواه منهلاً مورودا
The tide of kindness none but they
Offered as a running spring
وبقيةُ الأمجاد لم يُرَ غيره
خلفاً لهم فوق الثرى موجودا
No other remains above the soil
Except as their heir keeping guard
مستظهراً بعناية من ربه
وقفتْ عليه العزَّ والتأييدا
Secured through the care of his Lord
Honour and victory by him dwelled
متمحضٌ لله في أفعاله
بالغيب يخشى الخالق المعبودا
Devoted solely to God in deed
Fearing the hidden and worshipped Lord
فكأنما الأعضاء منه أعينٌ
تذكي جهنَّمُ نصبهنَّ وقودا
As if his body parts were all eyes
And hell their kindling fiery food
لم تجترحْ ذنباً جوارحُ جسمه
بل كانَ عن خطط الذنوب بعيدا
None of his organs has sinned
But were distant from sin and void
فتراه مرتعدَ الفرائص رهبةً
لا باحتمال خطيئةٍ مجهودا
So you find him trembling in duties
Unable to risk any laboured fault
يمسي بنفسٍ لا تميلُ مع الهوى
لله يحيي ليله تهجيدا
He sleeps with a soul not leaning to desires
Living his night in praise glorious
وإذا تجلّى الليل أصبح باسطاً
للوفد كفاً ما تغبُّ الجودا
If night unravels he offers welcome
With palms where no favour fails
نسكٌ كما شاء الإلهُ وأنعمٌ
لم يحصها إلاَّ الإلهُ عديدا
Rites as God wills, gifts none can tell
But the God who knows all in count
يا من لو اقتسم الأنامُ صلاحه
ما سنَّ فيهم ذو الجلال حدودا
O he whom if people shared his grace
The Majestic would not share at all
لله منجبةٌ ولدتَ بحجرها
كانَ التقى في حجرها مولودا
For God a loins that carried you
Where piety inside was cradled
لا تغتذي بغذا الجنين نزاهةً
لكن غذيت الشكرَ والتحميدا
She does not eat as embryos eat
But you were reared on thanks without cease
وبرزت والدنيا جميعاً مجهلٌ
علماً جلا منها الغواشي السودا
You came and all the world was ignorant
As the light of knowledge shone clearing shadows
وغدتْ وكانت عاقراً أمُّ الندى
لمَّا تطرَّقها نداك ولودا
The Amina though barren became
The um al-nudÃ¡when hailed as mother
تنميك من سلف المعالي أسرةٌ
غلبوا على الشرف الكرام الصيدا
From your ancestors the glories prevail
Subduing honours most famed
من كل معصوم البصيرة لم يزلْ
منه الرداءُ على التقى معقودا
The mantle of piety was always draped
On each immaculate forefather
لم يرتفعْ لك بيتُ مكرمةٍ لهم
إلاَّ وكان له أخوك عمودا
No house of honours was raised for you
Except where your brother stood its column
شهدتْ صفات أبي الأمين بأنه
فضُلَ البريَّة سيداً ومسودا
Witnessed are the traits of the Trusted
That he excelled the best of all humans
وأحله حيثُ استحقَّ من العلى
حسبٌ على الأحساب نال مزيدا
And is most fitting in rank by The Sublime
Measure above all measures gaining increase
بذلَ السماحَ بذا الزمان وإنه
لأعزُّ من بيض الأنوق وجودا
He who spent freely in this mean time
More precious than white nÃ»q souls in creation
وعلى حياض سماحه اختلف الورى
شرقاً وغرباً مصدراً وورودا
And the horizons traveled to and fro
To his sea of kindness in every direction
يزداد منهلُ عرفه فيضاً إذا
جفَّتْ ضروعُ الغاديات جمودا
His spring of honour flows more
When breasts of others harshly dried
ما إن غدا في العرف مبدأ غايةٍ
إلاَّ لها ابنُ أخيه كانَ معيدا
If a beginner in glory became its end
For every end his brother was its renewer
ليس الحيا الوسميُّ من جدوى محم
دٍ الرضا في المحلِ أنضر عودا
The branded camel is no use in Dhi al-Rida’s abode
So it left to water in glee
قد جاورتْ مغناهُ دجلة فاغتدى
بندى يديه ماؤها ممدودا
The Tigris neighbors where it found
Its banks extended in bounty
والبحر من يُمسي ويصبح جاره
لا بد أنْ يمتاح منه الجودا
The sea neighbors morn and eve
Where generosity can always flow
جذلان يشرق للسماحة كلما
دفع الظلامُ له الركابَ وفودا
JadhlÃ¥n always rises for munificence whenever
Darkness sets out lamps for caravans thronging
يسترشدون بنور أبلجَ إنْ خبا
ضوءُ النجوم يزد سناه وقودا
Seeking the light whose white blaze when dimmed
The stars increase its wick kindling
بأغرَّ يغلب وجهه شمس الضحى
بضيائه حتَّى تموت خمودا
With cheek fairer than the dawn sun
Vanquishing all gloom silencing
ما المجد منتحلٌ لديه وإنما
ولدته أمُّ المكرمات مجيدا
Glory here is no pretender but
Was born to the mother of glories eminent
قد حلَّقتْ فيه لأرفع رتبةٍ
هممٌ تناهتْ في العلوِّ صعودا
For the highest rank the loftiest determination hovered
Scaling the ascent ever upward
وحوتْ له النفسُ الكريمة سؤدداً
أمسى بناصية السهى معقودا
The generous soul for him struggles
Controlling the realm of high rule
فإذا عقود المجد فُصِّل نظمُها
كانت مناقبه لهنَّ فريدا
If necklaces of glory entwined
His virtues for them unique will stay
هو شمس أفق المكرمات وبدرها ال
هادي لمن أمسى يجوب البيدا
The sun of the horizons of honours and their
Guiding moon for those roving the ruins and sands
ورث السماحة من خضمِّ سماحةٍ
فغدا بمجموع الفخار وحيدا
Inheriting bounty from deep bounty
He remains in gathered glory without peer
ذا الشبلُ من ذاك الهزبر وإنما
تلد الأسودُ الضاريات أسودا
From that lion comes this cub
Since lions beget ferocious lions
يا من تعذَّر أن يحيط بوصفهم
نظمٌ ولو ملأ الزمان قصيدا
O you whose verse fails to encompass describing them
Even if filling time with plenty odes
والجامعين المكرمات بوفرهم
مذ أكثروا في شمله التبديدا
They who gathered honours in plenty
Then spread never to reunite
ولهم بأندية العلاء إذا بدوا
تهوى الأعاظم ركَّعاً وسجودا
In the assemblages of the exalted when present
The greatest fall kneeling in prayer
أهدتْ لجيد علاكم ابنةُ فكرتي
درر الثناء قلائداً وعقودا
The daughter of my thoughts has gifted
Your countenance pearls and necklaces intricate
جُليتْ محاسنها عليكم فاجتلوا
منها لمجدكم كعاباً رودا
Revealing their beauties upon you
Gleaming thereby your glories bright
هي نثرةٌ تضفوا على أحسابكم
زُغفٌ خلفتُ بنسجها داوودا
A scattering that adds rainbows Still leaving DaÃod entranced
Immortalised for you all praise
قد خلَّدت لكم الثناء وسؤلها
إنَّ الثناء لكم يدوم خلودا
Though praise itself for you lasts
You thus remain in your Lord’s bliss
فبقيتمُ في غبطةٍ من ربِّكم
لكنْ بقاءً لم يكن محدودا
Though in lasting with no set term
