أَلفتكَ نافرةُ الظباءِ الهيفِ

واستوطنت في ربعك المألوفِ

The wild deer fled from you in fright

And settled in your familiar land

فانعم بناعمةِ الشبيبةِ غضَّةٍ

بيضاءَ ضاميةِ الوشاح رَشوف

So enjoy the softness of tender youth

White, drawing near with fluttering scarf

أبداً يروقُ العين في وَجناتها

وردٌ ولكن ليسَ بالمقطوفِ

Eyes ever feast on her dimpled cheeks

Roses, but not the plucked kind

هي قِبلةٌ صلَّى لها غَزَلي كما

صلَّى ثنايَ لقبلةِ المعروف

She is a prayer to which my love bowed down

As he would bow to the beloved divine

الماجد الحسنِ المكارمِ ملجأ ال

عافي الكريث ونجدة الملهوف

Refuge of glory, goodness and nobleness

Wellspring of virtue, aid of the distressed

قمرٌ زَهت منه البسيطةُ كلُّها

بأشعّ من قمرِ السماءِ المُوفي

A moon which illuminated the whole plain

Brighter than the full orb in the compliant sky

الأزهر الغطريف نجلُ الأزهر ال

غطريفِ نجل الأزهر الغطريف

The most splendid chivalrous one, son of the most splendid

ما راقَ في صدرِ النديِّ بشاشَةً

إلاَّ وراعَ بهيبةِ ابن غريف

None has delighted the chief with such joy

Except with awe for the son of the honored tribe

ومقوَّمُ الآراءِ ثقَّفهُ النُهى

وكذا الرماحُ تُقام بالتثقيفِ

Corrector of judgments, edified by propriety

As lessons make spears straight and smooth

كَرَماً يتابع للوفود هباته

لم يُثن في عذلٍ ولا تعنيفِ

Generous, gifts to delegations he sends

Neither blaming nor censuring their circumstance

الجودُ عند سواه أن يعِدَ الندى

ويُميتُ ذاك الوعدِ بالتسويفِ

Others promise generosity but fail

To deliver, killing hopes over time

هو غيثُ مكرمةٍ وبدرُ مفاخرٍ

ومحطُّ آمالٍ وأمنُ مَخوفِ

He is rain of bounty, full moon of glories

Destination of hopes, refuge for the fearful
