1. غمضت بغتةً جفونُ الفناءِ

    فوق إنسانِ مقلة العلياءِ

    The eyes of oblivion closed suddenly

    Upon a glorious man of high stature

  2. وله نقّبت بغاشية الحزن

    محيَّا الدنيا يدُ النكباء

    And with sadness I probed for him

    Bidding the world farewell with grief

  3. حمّلت وقر عبئها كاهلَ الده

    رِ فأمسى يرغو من الإعياء

    It loaded its burden on the shoulders of time

    Leaving it to whimper in exhaustion

  4. نكبةٌ لم تدعْ جليداً على الوج

    د ولا صابراً على اللأواء

    A catastrophe that left no ice on hearts

    Nor patience for afflictions

  5. ليت أمّ الخطوب تعقمُ ماذا

    أنتجت بغتة من الأرزاء

    If only the mother of calamities would become barren

    Of the woes she suddenly birthed

  6. ولدت حين عنَّست هرماً ما

    لم تلدْ مثله بوقت الصباء

    She gave birth when she disgraced a dignified elder

    None like him even in the days of youth

  7. فأصابت يداه في حرم المجدِ

    فؤادَ العليا بسهم القضاء

    So his hands reached the sanctuary of glory

    Piercing the heart of the eminent with the arrow of destiny

  8. فقضت نحبها وغيرُ عجيبٍ

    قد أُصيب بأرأس الأعضاء

    Ending his life and that of others, strangely

    The best of body parts were afflicted

  9. يا صريعَ الحمام صلَّى عليك

    اللهُ من نازلٍ بربع الفناء

    O martyr of doves, may God bless you

    With forgiveness and grace in the corner of oblivion

  10. وسقى منه تربةً ضمنت جسمَ

    ك غيث الغفران والنعماء

    And quench with it the soil that held your body

    With rains of forgiveness and bounty

  11. فحقيرٌ نوءُ الجفون وما قَد

    رُ جفون السحاب والأنواء

    So mean are the tearing eyes, and how magnificent

    Were the tearing clouds and firmaments

  12. أين عيس المنون فيك استقلت

    بالحصيف المضفّر الآراء

    Where is death that seized you whole

    In its inevitable grasp, tearing at the joints?

  13. ذهبت في معرسِ السفرِ جوداً

    وروى حوَّم الأماني الظماء

    You left with generosity on the night of travel

    Satiating the thirsty dreams of desire

  14. نعم ربُّ النديِّ حلماً إذا النك

    باءُ طارت بحوبة الحلماء

    Yes, the Lord of munificence, when

    Calamity befalls, shatters the dreams of the aspiring

  15. نعم ربُّ الحجى إذا أكل الطي

    شُ حجى الحازمين في اللأواء

    Yes, the Lord of discourse, when adversity eats away

    At the discourse of the resolute in afflictions

  16. نعم ربُّ الندى إذا كسع الشولُ

    بأغبارها عيالَ الشتاء

    Yes, the Lord of dew, when the fox

    Coats its fur-coat with grime in winter

  17. نعم ربُّ القِرى إذا هبَّت الري

    حُ شمالاً في الشتوة الغبراء

    Yes, the Lord of towns, when the winds

    Blow north in the dusty, murky winter

  18. نعم ربُّ الجفان ليلةً يُمسي

    بضياهنَّ مقمرُ الظلماء

    Yes, the Lord of the eyelids on a night

    That ends with their glow dispelling the darkness

  19. يا عفاء الأنام شرقاً وغرباً

    دونكم فاحتبوا بثوب العفاء

    O noblest of mankind, east and west

    Lower your eyes, disappointed, donning the gown of chastity

  20. واقصروا أعينَ الرجاء قنوطاً

    مَن إليه تمتدُّ في البأساء

    And despair for raging passion in those

    Who cared for you more than fathers

  21. وانحبوا عن حريق وجدٍ لمن كا

    نَ عليكم أحنى من الآباء

    Their love for you would suffice even if

    The two horizons were to vie in affection

  22. يستقلُّ الحبا لكم إن وفدتم

    ولو المشرقان بعضُ الحباء

    If your eyes were to weep for him, and the

    Seven seas and snakes weep in mourning

  23. لو بكته عيونكم وأفضن الأ

    بحرُ السبع والحيا في البكاء

    They would not express a fraction of what

    His generous palm dispensed

  24. لم تفوّه معشارَ ما قد أفاضت

    لكم راحُ كفّه البيضاء

    They sent the martyr towards a tomb wherein is found

    Sublimity and generosity

  25. رحّلوا العيسَ قاصدين ضريحاً

    فيه ما فيه من علًى وسخاء

    And seek solace in it from the deepest pain

    Of stricken hearts, darkened with sorrow

  26. واعقِروا عنده وجلَّ عن العقر

    قلوباً مطلولة السوداء

    A grave from which your livelihood poured, so

    Pour over it the blood of your entrails

  27. جدثٌ ماء عيشكم غاض فيه

    فانضحوا فوقه دمَ الأحشاء

    In it lies the Sufficient One who sufficed

    Adam with cloud-showers for the sons

  28. حلَّ فيه من قد كفى آدماً في

    غيث جدواه عيلة الأبناء

    I wish I knew how death drew near him

    While he was in the prime of glorious youth

  29. ليت شعري أنَّى دنا الموت منه

    وهو في ربع عزَّةٍ قعساء

    Did it come to him begging as he gave

    All that his hands contained to the poor?

  30. هل أتاه مسترفداً حين أعطى

    ما حوته يداهُ للفقراء

    His virtues wished to ransom him

    With their glorious and generous sons

  31. ودَّت المكرماتُ أن تفتديه

    ببنيها الأماجد الكرماء

    They take his place with their eyes, but

    He takes light’s place in their eyes

  32. هم مكانُ الجفون منها ولكن

    هو في عينها مكان الضياء

    While they are dead in life, he is

    A dead man counted among the living

  33. وهم في الحياة موتى ولكن

    هو ميتٌ يعدُّ في الأحياء

    So the vile soul coveted him when

    Destitution came calling ashamed

  34. فحبا نفسَه الردى إذ أتاهُ

    مستميحاً يمشي على استحياء

    After a lifetime providing plenty through his

    Unbounded open-handedness

  35. بعدما عاشت العفاة زماناً

    من نداه في أسبغ النعماء

    Poverty learned its need for him, but

    Death did not, among the destitute

  36. علمت فقرَها إليه ولم تعلم

    إليه الردى من الفقراء

    You unleashed his fate from drought

    With dew and remarkable generosity

  37. يا عقيدي على الجوى كبر الخط

    بُ فأهون بالدمعة البيضاء

    So he reaped what he reaped, and it is no wonder

    Ill-fate befalls the open-handed

  38. أجرِ من ذوب قلبك الدمعة الحم

    راء حزناً في الوجنة الصفراء

    If he was angry at You yesterday for

    This silent calamity

  39. عودُ صبري من اللحا قد تعرَّى

    فانبذ الصبرَ لوعةً في العراء

    Today, in Muhammad you have

    utmost acceptance, he is most accepting

  40. إن تسلني عن ظلمة الكون لمَّا

    حُلن أنوارَ أرضه والسماء

    A resurrector whose radiant face

    Pours, like the dripping of clouds, the water of life

  41. فهو أثواب ليل حزن دجاه

    طبّق الخافقين بالظلماء

    Sublime, the heavens are dull earth

    To his towering aspirations

  42. قد خفقن النجوم منه بجنحٍ

    سامَ أنوارَهنَّ بالإِطفاء

    With virtues my verse cannot contain

    Even if I indexed the stars in the sky

  43. ولبدر الغبراء حال أخوه

    بدرُ أهل الغبراء والخضراء

    Or my mouth became in it an eloquent tongue

    I could not express a fraction of praise

  44. وإلى الشمس قد نعوه فماتت

    جزعاً من سماع صوت النعاء

    To enumerate them words fail, so I

    Deemed it impossible to enumerate

  45. وله غصَّ بالمصابِ ولما

    يتنفس حتَّى قضى ابن ذُكاء

    The Excellence of Virtue became enamored with him

    And the necklaces of glory adorned him

  46. وقف المجد ناشداً يومَ أودى

    شاحبَ الوجه كاسف الأضواء

    An intelligent one, compared to whom if

    The people of merit were weighed, they seem fools

  47. هل ترى صالحاً على الأرض لمَّا

    غابَ فيها المهديُّ بدر العلاء

    One who prays for glory behind his brother

    In the race of nobles and peers

  48. قلت خفّض عليك من عظم الأم

    ر ونهنه من لوعة البرحاء

    Striving virtuously with precious mettle

    Above all other equals

  49. ليس إلاَّ محمدٌ صالحٌ يوجد

    في الأرض من بني حوَّاء

    Each appears to belong to

    The ancestry of fathers

  50. في التقى والصلاح والزهد والخش

    ية والنسك بل وحسن الرجاء

    For the generous palms you are gems

    In which clouds melt on the day of rain

  51. هي في العالمين أجزاء لكن

    هو كلٌّ لهذه الأجزاء

    O assembly of glory, the honorable entourage

    Pale of face, verdant in the afterlife

  52. وبيوم المعاد لو لقيَ الخل

    قَ بأعماله إلهُ السماء

    Muhammad granted them fair remembrance for

    He was the righteous son

  53. كانَ حقًّا أن يعدم النار إذ ليس

    نصيبٌ للنارِ في الأتقياء

    Awake in the guardianship of God’s religion even

    In states of inadvertent neglect

  54. ليس ينفكُّ للجميل قريباً

    وبعيداً عن خطّة الفحشاء

    With an unsullied, white conscience

    Unchanged by the iniquities of white and yellow

  55. ومهاباً له على أعين الدهر

    قضى الكبرياءَ بالإِغضاء

    O knowing guide who targets the unseen

    With a steady aim true of insight

  56. وبليغاً قد انتظمن معاني

    هِ بسلكِ الإِعجاز للبلغاء

    O stoic of grief who folds his emotions

    Muffling his groans silently

  57. وفصيحاً بنطقه يخرس الده

    رَ فما قدرُ سائر الفصحاء

    To you time bowed until

    In description, you were among the chaste

  58. فارسُ المشكلات إن ندبوه

    لبيانِ المقالة العوصاء

    You grasped gentleness in your hand so the world

    Became your freed slave through your gentleness

  59. فهو من عزِّ لفظه يطعن الثغ

    رةَ منه بالحجَّة البيضاء

    If the servant did wrong, a servant can be

    Wrong out of blind misguidance toward his Master

  60. واحدُ الفضلِ ما لهُ فيه ثانٍ

    غير عبد الكريم غيث العطاء

    You unleashed the shackles of his years of dearth

    With your clouds of favor and remarkable generosity

  61. بعقود الثناء فخراً تحلَّى

    وتحلَّت به عقودُ الثناء

    So he reaped what he reaped, and it is no wonder

    Ill-fate befalls the emancipated

  62. الذكيُّ الذي إذا قستَ أهلَ ال

    فضل فيه كانوا من الأغبياء

    If yesterday he angered you

    With the silent strike of this calamity

  63. والمصلِّي للمجدِ خلف أخيه

    في سباق الأشباه والنظراء

    Today in Muhammad you have delight

    And utmost acceptance from Him

  64. ضربا في العُلى بعرقٍ كريمٍ

    واحدٍ دون سائر الأكفاء

    One whose resurrecting essence drips

    Like the dripping of clouds, the bashfulness of life

  65. ينتمي كلُّ واحدٍ منهما عن

    د انتساب الأبناء للآباء

    Sublime - towards his aspirations the Firmament

    Is but stars, the shining of its essence as light

  66. للكرام الأكفّ تحسب فيهنَّ

    يذوبُ الغمامُ يوم السخاء

    And virtues my verse cannot contain

    Even if I indexed the meteors in the sky

  67. معشرُ المجدِ شيعة الشرفِ البا

    ذخ بيضُ الوجوه خضر الفناء

    Or my mouth spoke in it an eloquent tongue

    I could not attain the outskirts of praise

  68. قد حباهم محمدٌ بجميل ال

    ذكر إذ كانَ صالح الأبناء

    Without enumerating them, words fail

    So counting them becomes impossible

  69. يقظُ القلب في حياطة دين اللّ

    ه حتَّى في حالة الإِغفاء

    The heart of Splendor fell in love with him

    Not with the affection of beautiful gazelles

  70. ذو يمينٍ بيضاء لم تتغيَّرْ

    بأثام البيضاء والصفراء

    His nature excelled mankind, overflowing

    To make the meadow into a singing garden

  71. يا عليماً يصيب شاكلة الغي

    ب بتسديد أسهم الآراء

    A refined nature that renders

    The air dense in his presence

  72. وكظيماً للحزن يطوي حشاه

    جلداً فوق زفرةٍ خرساء

    Suckled by Sublimity with two teats, and two

    From the Suckling of the Mother of Sublimity

  73. لك ذلّت عرامة الدهر حتَّى

    لك أمسى يُعدُّ في الوصفاء

    Through time they share equally the pride

    Above all creatures without rivalry

  74. ملكت رقَّه يمينك فالعا

    لم من رقّه من العتقاء

    His soul befriended generosity from its first youth

    Blessed was the prime of his burgeoning youth

  75. ولئن قد أساء فالعبدُ للمو

    لى مسيءٌ جهلاً بغير اهتداء

    And he comprehended virtue in tender age, surpassing

    The stride of elders in glory

  76. أنتَ أطلقتَ أسر أعوامه الغب

    ر من الجدب بالندى والسخاء

    O great breadth of chests in every ordeal

    And heaviness of resolve in tribulation

  77. فجنى ما جنى وغير عجيبٍ

    إنَّما السوء عادةَ الطلقاءِ

    You will not stray for the full moon guides you

    Through the darkness of the murky night

  78. ولئن كانَ مسخطاً لك بالأم

    سِ بهذي المصيبة الصمَّاء

    As does his brother Muhammad, your dream in which is

    Hussein, solace of the suffering

  79. فلك اليوم في محمدٍ الندب

    الرضا عنه فهو أعلى الرضاء

    In every significant event you have faces

    Immune from the ravages of time’s praise

  80. ذو محيًّا كالبدر يقطر منه

    مثل طلِّ الأنداء ماءُ الحياء

    And souls that when they meet with afflictions

    Do not waver when they clash

  81. وعلاءٍ هي السماء مساعي

    ه نجومٌ لألاؤُها بالضياء

    And hearts as smooth as honesty that chime

    Melodiously with every funeral tune

  82. ومزاياً لم أرض نظميَ فيها

    ولوَ انِّي نظمتُ شهبَ السماء

    Bearing your name is consolation for anguish

    And bearing your calamities I fold into myself

  83. أو فمُ الدهر كنتُ فيه لساناً

    ناطقاً ما بلغتُ بعض الثناء

    So you have in one another some solace

    And we have in you fair consolation

  84. دون إحصائها الكلامُ تناهى

    فغدت مستحيلة الإحصاء

  85. تيَّمت قلبه حسانُ المعالي

    بهواهنَّ لا حسانُ الظباء

  86. وعلى الخَلق خلقُه فاض بالبش

    ر فأزرى بالروضة الغنَّاء

  87. خُلقٌ شفَّ فالهواء كثيفٌ

    عنده إن قرنته بالهواء

  88. أرضعته العلاءُ ثدياً وثدياً

    رضع المصطفى ابنُ أمِّ العلاء

  89. فهما في الزمانِ يقتسمان ال

    فخرَ دون الورى بحظٍّ سواء

  90. ألفت نفسُه السماحَ فتيًّا

    بُوركا من فتوةٍ وفتاء

  91. وحوى الفضلَ يافعَ السنِّ لمَّا

    فات شوطَ المشايخ العظماء

  92. يا رحابَ الصدور في كلِّ خطبٍ

    وثقالَ الحلوم عند البلاء

  93. لن تضلُّوا السبيلَ والبدرُ هادٍ

    لكم في دجنَّة الغمَّاء

  94. وأخوه محمدٌ حلمكُم فيه

    حسين رأسٍ لدى النكباء

  95. ولكم أوجهٌ بكلِّ مهمٍّ

    ليس منها يحولُ حسنُ الثناء

  96. ونفوسٌ إذا التقت بالرزايا

    غير مضعوفة القوى باللقاء

  97. وكملس الصفا قلوبٌ لدى الخط

    ب بها رنَّ مقطعُ الأرزاء

  98. إن أسمكم حسنَ الأسى ولأضعا

    ف أساكم تضمَّنت أحشائي

  99. فلكم بعضكم ببعضٍ عزاءٌ

    ولنا فيكم جميل العزاء
