1. كلَّما زادكَ المحبُّ اقترابا

    زدتَ عنه تباعداً واجتنابا

    The more the lover draws near in affection

    The further you distance yourself and avoid

  2. شيمةٌ ليست العُلى ترتضيها

    للذي كانَ هاشميًّا لُبابا

    A trait not befitting the exalted

    One who was the cream of the Hāshims

  3. يا هماماً ضَربنَ في طينةِ العل

    ياء أعراقُه فطبنَ وطابا

    O the one whose essence was created from the clay of nobility

    Whose lineage is pure and good

  4. لا تَسم هذه الأواصر قَطعاً

    ليس ذا اليومُ يومَ لا أنسابا

    Do not sever these bonds

    Today is not a day for lineages

  5. كيف تُغضي وقد سمعت عتاباً

    لم أخلني عدوتُ فيه الصوابا

    How can you turn away when you've heard reproach

    My enemy has not wronged me in this

  6. هل أتى غير مُفهمٍ عن قصورٍ

    أم تُراني أسأت فيه الخطابا

    Has someone who misunderstands brought you stories of shortcomings

    Or do you think I have erred in my address

  7. أو تَثاقلتَ عن مَلالٍ وحاشا

    كَ فكانَ السكوتُ منك جوابا

    Or have you grown weary of tedium, never!

    Such silence from you would be an answer

  8. كان ظنِّي بأن على إثر إن نا

    ديتُ أغدو بما رجوتُ مُجابا

    I thought that soon

    I would be answered favorably in what I hoped for

  9. فإذا بي أتابعُ الرسلَ تَترى

    بكتابٍ للعتب يَتلو كِتابا

    Yet here I am, sending messengers in succession

    With a letter of reproach following a letter

  10. لستُ أسخو بأن يقولَ لساني

    مسَّ بعضُ التغيير ذاكَ الجَنابا

    I cannot say with my tongue

    That some change has touched that excellence

  11. يا تنزَّهتَ عن تَطرّق ظَنٍّ

    بسجاياكَ أن تحولَ انقلابا

    You are far above any hint of suspicion

    In your nature ever turning capricious

  12. قد أبت تلكُم الخلائقُ حتَّى

    للعِدى أن تكون إلاَّ عذابا

    Indeed those traits refuse

    To be anything but torment to enemies

  13. سؤتني يا نسيجَ وحدِك حدًّا

    فَنسجتُ القريضَ فيك عتابا

    You have pained me, oh lone confidant

    So I have woven into you this reproach

  14. إن تجدني أطلتُ نحوكَ تِردا

    دِيَ بالعَتبِ جيئةً وذهابا

    If you find me overly bold toward you in my reply

    Counter my reproach with coming and going

  15. فلوِدٍّ شكا وأيأسُ شاكٍ

    مَن يُداوي بعتبهِ الأَوصابا

    A loving heart complained and despaired

    Who will heal with his reproach the wounds
