1. أرأيت كيفَ بدا يشيرُ

    بلحاظه الرشأُ الغَريرُ

    I saw how his glances began to gesture,

    The delicate eyelash, so charming,

  2. خطّ ابن مُقلته الهوى

    وارتاحَ يقرأهُ الضميرُ

    Tracing the line of his enamored eyelid,

    And the conscience found peace reading it.

  3. في طُرس خدٍّ من خيال

    الهدبِ لاحَ به سطورُ

    In the apples of cheeks of fantasy,

    Lines shone through the down,

  4. فصحيفةُ البشرى محيَّاه

    ورونقه البشيرُ

    So the parchment of good tidings smiled at him,

    And the harbinger adorned it.

  5. حيَّا بيوم كادَ يقطر

    من غضارته السرورُ

    It greeted a day that almost dripped,

    With its abundant joy,

  6. وأدارَ لامعةً تشفُّ

    كخدّه بأبي المديرُ

    And turned a shining blade that reveals,

    Like his cheek, the full moon.

  7. أَهلاً وقد حدرَ اللثا

    مَ كأنَّه القمرُ المنيرُ

    Welcome! The spittle almost fell,

    As if it were the shining moon,

  8. رشأٌ إذا كسرَ الجفونَ

    فقلبُ عاشِقه الكسيرُ

    An eyelash, if it touches the eyelids,

    Then the heart of its lover breaks.

  9. والجفنُ أصرع ما يكون

    غداةَ يصرعهُ الفتورُ

    And the eyelid is the quickest to fall,

    The next morning, broken by languor.

  10. خصر اللمى تحيي وتق

    تل في تكسّرها الخصورُ

    The waist of a gazelle revives and kills,

    In its subtle movements the souls perish.

  11. يا جاهلاً نبأَ اللحاظ

    وذاكَ يعقله البصيرُ

    O ignorant one, the news of the glances,

    Only the wise understands it.

  12. أفلا سقطتَ على الخبير

    بوحيها فأنا الخبيرُ

    Why have you not fallen upon the expert,

    With her inspiration? I am the expert!

  13. إنَّ الوجوهَ لكالزجاجة

    تستبينُ بها الأُمورُ

    Faces are like glass,

    Through them matters become clear,

  14. وتشفُّ عمَّا خلفها

    فله بها أبداً ظهورُ

    And they reveal what is behind them,

    So through them His signs always appear.

  15. وإذا القلوبُ تراسلت

    فمن اللحاظ لها سفيرُ

    And when hearts correspond,

    The glances are their envoys.

  16. بشراك زرتك يقظة

    فالطيف طارقه غُرورُ

    In a dream I visited you,

    So fantasies were the deceiving visitor.

  17. فدعوت لي فيه الهنا

    ولغيري الجدّ العثورُ

    I invoked blessing upon you,

    And for others, serious effort.

  18. أحبب إليك بهالةٍ

    فيها تنادمتِ البدورُ

    I loved you with an aura,

    In which stars were intimate.

  19. هي جنَّة لكن سقاةُ

    رحيقها المختوم حورُ

    It is a paradise, but its sealed wine,

    Are maidens of paradise.

  20. بين الخدور ولا أُصرّحُ

    باسم من حوت الخدورُ

    Among the cheeks, and I do not declare,

    The name of her who contained the cheeks.

  21. بيضاء مطعمةُ الهوى

    شهدت بعفَّتها الستورُ

    White, complexioned with love,

    Her virtue witnessed by the screens.

  22. كلفي بصائدة القلوب

    ومن حبائلها الشعورُ

    Entrap me, huntress of hearts,

    And she whose snares are passions.

  23. ما بين قرطيها إلى الخل

    خال روض صباً نظيرُ

    From her earrings to her mole,

    A garden, the youth its stream.

  24. والوجنتانِ شقيقةٌ

    ماء الشباب لها غديرُ

    And both cheeks are sisters,

    The water of youth their brook.

  25. كيف الوصول لخدرها

    ووراء كِلّتها الغيورُ

    How to reach her intoxicated cheek,

    When her jealousy is guarding her?

  26. لامَ العذولُ بها وقالَ

    من الصبابة لا عذيرُ

    Blame the virgin, who said,

    “For youth there is no excuse.”

  27. لا تخدعنَّك غريرةٌ

    هي أمّها الدنيا الغرورُ

    Let not the coquetry deceive you,

    Its source is the deceitful world.

  28. والعشقُ لا يملك فؤاد

    ك فهو سلطانٌ يجورُ

    And love cannot control a heart,

    For it is a tyrannical sultan.

  29. كم مغرمٍ حكمت بمهجته

    الترائبُ والنحورُ

    How many enamored ones your glances have judged,

    To languish and pine.

  30. ثم انثنت ولها حُشا

    شة صدره وله الزفيرُ

    Then she bent, and her breast contained,

    His breath, and his sigh.

  31. قسماً بأيدي الرامياتِ

    إلى مِنًى عنقاً تسيرُ

    I swear by the hands of archers,

    Aiming for the necks they lead!

  32. قلَّ الكرامُ وإنَّما

    بكم قليلهم كثيرُ

    The generous are few, but by you,

    Their few are many.

  33. ولكِّ عصرٍ أوَّل

    منهم لأوَّلكم أخيرُ

    For every era there is a first,

    Of them for your first a last.

  34. نفر إلى غير المساعي

    العزّ ليس لكم نفيرُ

    Some strive for other than deeds,

    Honor does not come to you without effort.

  35. للمجد كلّكم بدور

    فلك السعود بها يدورُ

    For glory you all take turns,

    So good fortune revolves around you.

  36. وعلى ارتشاف طلى الهنا

    أبداً نديمكم السرورُ

    And the pleasure of sipping the joy of bliss,

    Will always be your boon companion.

  37. أصبا القريض قفي فقد

    بلغَ المقامَ بك المسيرُ

    The stringing of poems succeeded,

    For the destination has been reached by you.

  38. حُطِّي اللثامَ فهاهنا

    روضُ المباكر والغدير

    Remove the veil, for here,

    Is the meadow of early rising and streams.

  39. ومن القوافي فتِّحي

    زهراً به تبهى العصورُ

    And of rhymes, pluck open

    A blossom by which eras thrive.

  40. يبقى كما اشتهت العُلى

    غضًّا تهاداه الدهورُ

    It remains, as the sublime desired,

    Evergreen, courted by times.

  41. سبحان من بالمصطفى

    أسرى فطابَ له المسيرُ

    Glory to Him who took His Servant by night,

    From the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque.

  42. حملته همَّته وتلك

    هي البُراق به تطيرُ

    His determination carried him, and that,

    Is Al-Buraq by which he flew.

  43. للحجّ سارَ ومن رأى

    ركناً إلى رمن يسيرُ

    He traveled to the Hajj, and whoever saw,

    A shrine, to a pillar he walked.

  44. فالأرضُ تشهد كلّها

    لك إنَّك النوء الغزيرُ

    So the whole earth testifies,

    You are the pouring rain.

  45. حيّت أغرّ كأن طلع

    ةَ وجهه قمرٌ منيرُ

    You have lived the most delightful life,

    As if the rising of his face were the shining moon.

  46. لا النَسرُ طارَ لها ولا

    عبرت بها الشعرى العبورُ

    Neither eagle flew to it, nor

    Did the Sirius star cross it.

  47. قِرّي شقاشق غيرها

    فبذا النديّ لها الهديرُ

    Chirp the notes of others,

    For by this qualified one they trill.
