1. حبستُ على اللهو قلباً طليقا

    وقمتُ أُحيّي الخيالَ الطرُوقا

    I confined a free heart to frivolity,

    And stood to enliven fertile imagination,

  2. لدى روضةٍ قد كساها الربيعُ

    من النور والزهر بُرداً رقيقا

    In a garden dressed by spring

    With delicate silk and flowers of light.

  3. عليها الصبا سحبت ذيلَها

    وذرَّت من الطيبِ مِسكاً سحيقا

    Upon it the morning breeze drew its tail,

    And scattered abundant sweet musk.

  4. تروقك إن مرَّ فيها النسيمُ

    منها يلاعبُ غصناً وريقا

    You would delight if a soft breeze passed through it,

    Playing with a tender branch.

  5. كأَنَّ الغصون إذا الوِرق غنَّت

    على الأيك نشوانُ لن يستفيقا

    As if the branches, when leaves sang,

    Upon the bent twig, would not awaken.

  6. إذا اعتنقت طرباً خِلتهنَّ

    شقيقاً يعانقُ شوقاً شقيقا

    If they embraced ecstasy in their solitude,

    A dear one would embrace dear longing.

  7. عشيَّة لهوٍ بها الدهرُ جادَ

    بها عادَ عيشي غضًّا أنيقا

    An evening of play which time granted it,

    Through it my life returned fresh and elegant.

  8. أمنتُ بها الدهرَ حتَّى كأنِّي

    أخذتُ على الدهرِ عهداً وثيقا

    I trusted it until it seemed

    I had taken a solemn pledge of time.

  9. سررتُ بها غير أنَّ الحبيب

    فقدانُه ساءَ قلب المشوقا

    I rejoiced in it, but the absence of the beloved

    Saddened the longing heart.

  10. فكنت إذا قلبي اشتاقه

    لأرشفَ فاهُ رشفت الرحيقا

    So whenever my heart longed for him,

    I would sip the nectar and overflow.

  11. وأعتنقُ الغصنَ عن قدِّه

    وألثمُ عن وجنتيه الشقيقا

    And I would embrace the branch in his stead

    And kiss his cheeks in his place.

  12. فما زلتُ أجني ثمار السرور

    وأقضي به للغرام الحقوقا

    So I continued to pluck the fruits of joy

    And spend it on the rights of passion.

  13. إلى أن رأيت الصباحَ انتضى

    على مفرق الليل عضباً ذليقا

    Until I saw the morning burst forth

    On the horizon of night swift and strong.

  14. مضى الليلُ يدعو النجاءَ النجاءَ

    والصبحُ يدعو اللحوقَ اللحوقا

    The night passed calling survivors, survivors!

    And the morn calling for union, union!

  15. فقمتُ ولم أرَ ممَّا رأيتُ

    شيئاً أكفكفُ دمعاً دفوقا

    So I rose and saw of what I had seen

    Nothing to dry my pouring tears.

  16. وقد كنت أحسب طرفَ الزمانِ

    من سكرة النوم بي لن يفيقا

    And I had thought the edge of time

    Would not awaken me from the slumber of oblivion.

  17. فيا لائمي إن ذكرتُ العقيقَ

    ولولا الهوى ما ذكرت العقيقا

    So blame me, if I mentioned carnelian,

    For had it not been for love I'd not have mentioned carnelian.

  18. تذكَّرتُ من كنت ألهو به

    فصرت لكتم الهوى لن أُطيقا

    I remembered whom I sported with,

    So I cannot conceal my love anymore.

  19. لئن بانَ جسمي عنه فقد

    تخلَّف قلبي فيه وثيقا

    Though my body is apart from him,

    My heart still clings to him closely.

  20. فليت غدت حالباتُ الربيع

    حياها على غيره لن تُريقا

    Would that the milkmaids of spring

    Would not spill their life for another.

  21. فنسقي به مُرضِعات الربيع

    رضيعَ الخمائل ماءً دفوقا

    So let me milk them in spring

    To nourish the beloved's thirsty lips.

  22. ففي كلِّ يومٍ بأطلاله

    تغادرُ قلبَ المعنَّى خفوقا

    For in his dwelling everyday,

    The heart of the lover leaves broken.

  23. إذا ما رشفت لمى ثغرها

    تَعافُ الصبوحَ له والغبوقا

    When the saliva of his mouth drips,

    Dawn and dusk turn tender and compassionate.

  24. ترى البدرَ والغصنَ والظبيَ

    والنقى والعقيقَ بها والرحيقا

    You see the moon, the branch, the gazelle,

    The definitive, carnelian, and the saliva,

  25. محيًّا وقدًّا وجيداً وعيناً

    وردفاً ثقيلاً وثغراً وريقا

    Effacing, erect, good, eye,

    Heavy butt, tender mouth and slick.
