1. بنور وجهكَ لا بالشمس والقمرِ

    أضاء أُفقُ سماء المجد والخطر

    Not by the sun or moon's light

    Did the horizon of glory and danger illuminate

  2. وفي البريَّة من معروفك انتشرتْ

    رواية الشاهدين السمع والبصر

    And in the wilderness your kindness spread

    The testimony of the two witnesses, hearing and sight

  3. تحدثوا عنكَ حتَّى أن كلّ فمٍ

    به عبيرُ شذاً من نشرك العطر

    They spoke of you until every mouth

    Was fragrant with the scent of your perfume's diffusion

  4. فذكرُك المسك بين الناس يسحق با

    للسان والفم لا بالفهر والحجر

    So your mention is musk among people, ground

    By tongue and mouth, not by pestle and mortar

  5. وخلقُك الروضة الغنَّاء ترهم في

    نطاف بشرِك لا في ريِّق المطر

    And your creation, the melodious garden, murmurs

    In the dewdrops of your humanity, not in sprinkled rain

  6. وكفُّك البحر ما غاض الرجاء به

    إلاَّ وأبرز منه أنفسَ الدرر

    Your palm, when hope was turbulent upon it

    Brought forth from it the rarest pearls

  7. ودارُ عزّك تغدو الوفد ناعمةً

    فيها بأرغد عيشٍ ناعمٍ نضر

    And your abode where delegations softly tread

    In it, most plentifully and gently they live

  8. بها الضيوفُ تحيي منك أكرم مَن

    يعطي الرغائب من بدوٍ ومن حضر

    Therein guests are enlivened by your most generous

    Giving of hopes to nomad and settled alike

  9. حيث الجنان على بعدٍ تضيءُ بها

    للطارقين ضياءَ الأنجم الزهرِ

    Where gardens in the distance illuminate

    For visitors the brilliance of radiant stars

  10. لقد غدا الأُفقُ العلويُّ يحسدها

    على مواقدها في سالف العصر

    The upper horizon has come to envy it

    For its fireplaces in eras past

  11. وودَّ لو أنَّها كانت به بدلاً

    من الكواكب حتَّى الشمس والقمر

    Wishing it were in its place instead

    Of planets, even the sun and moon

  12. فالشهب والبدر يطفي الصبحُ ضوءهما

    والشمسُ في الليل لم تشرقْ ولم تنر

    For meteors and moon, dawn extinguishes their light

    And sun lights not the night, nor makes it bright

  13. لكنَّ دارك لم تبرحْ مواقدُها

    مضيئةً تصل الإِصباحَ بالسحر

    But your abode, its fireplaces have not ceased

    Illuminating, connecting nightfall to dawn

  14. ما زلتَ ترفع فيها للقِرى كرماً

    ناراً شكا الأُفقُ منها لافحَ الشرر

    You continue to raise in it generosities,

    A fire the horizon complained of, sparks spraying

  15. يا مقرضَ الأرض في عصرٍ بها وثقت

    بنو الزمان بكنز البيض والصفر

    O lender of the earth in an era which entrusted

    The sons of time with treasures of white and yellow

  16. كأنَّما اللهُ لم يندبْ سواكَ إلى

    قرضٍ يضاعفُه في محكم السور

    As if God tasked none but you for a loan

    To doubly recompense in the Secure Book

  17. فلم تكنْ بشراً بل أنتَ روحُ ندًى

    للعالمين بدتْ في صورة البشر

    You were not mortal, but the soul of dew

    Made evident to the worlds in human form

  18. يفدي يديكَ ابنُ حرصٍ لا حياء له

    يلقى العفاةَ بوجهٍ قُدَّ من حجر

    The grasp of a son of greed without shame

    Met the destitute with a face of stone

  19. جرى لعلياكَ من جهلٍ فقلتُ له

    لقد جريتَ ولكنْ جرْيَ منحدر

    Ignorance befell your eminence, so I said to him

    "You overreached, but it was a stumbling fall"

  20. سما بك الحظُّ إلاَّ عن علاء أبي ال

    مهديّ حطَّك ذلُّ العجز والخور

    Fate exalted none but you, not even the most high Abu al-Muhdi

    Whose shadow diminished your weakness and disgrace

  21. أنتَ المعذّبُ بالأموال تجمعها

    خوفَ البغيضين من فقرٍ ومن عسر

    You are tormented with wealth you collect

    Fearing the wretchedness of poverty and hardship

  22. وهو المفرِّقُ ما يحويه مدّخراً

    كنزَ الخطيرين من حمدٍ ومن شكر

    While he freely spends what he hoards

    Like the generous' treasure of praise and gratitude

  23. ما ديمةُ القطر من صغرى أنامله

    للمحل أقتلُ في أعوامه الغُبر

    The permanence of rain from his little fingers

    For an abode is greater than years of dust

  24. يا ناظراً سيرَ الأمجاد دونك خذ

    منه العيانَ ودع ما جاءَ في السيَر

    O you who observe the course of glories besides yours, take

    Fact from it, and leave what is found in biographies

  25. تجدْ به من أبيه كلّ مأثرةٍ

    ما للحيا مثلها في الجود من أثر

    In it you will find from his father every glorious feat

    That the living cannot match in generosity or trace

  26. يريكها هو أو عبدُ الكريم بلا

    شكٍّ وأيُّهما إنْ شئتَ فاختبر

    You will see it through him or Abd al-Karim without

    Doubt, and whichever of them you test

  27. لا تطلبنَّ بها من ثالثٍ لهما

    هل ثالثٌ شاركَ العينين بالنظر

    Seek not through a third associate for the two

    Can a third partner match the seeing of two eyes?

  28. تفرَّعا للعُلى من دوحةٍ سُقيتْ

    ماءَ التُّقى فزكتْ في أوَّل العصر

    They branched from a single palm-tree, watered

    By the water of piety at the start of an age

  29. وقد سما فرعها الأعلى فأثمرَ ما

    بين النجوم بمثل الأنجم الزهر

    Its higher branch ascended and bore fruit amid

    The stars the likes of brilliant stars

  30. بكلِّ صافي المحيَّا بشرُه كرمٌ

    وكلُّ أخلاقه صفوٌ بلا كدر

    In all the clarity of his being, his nature is generosity

    And all his manners are unsullied purity

  31. ما أحدقوا بالرضا إلاَّ وخلتهمُ

    كواكباً تستمدُّ النورَ من قمر

    None have aspired to satisfaction except that they are

    Planets drawing light from the moon

  32. مهذَّبٌ يُتبعُ النعمى بثانيةٍ

    دأباً وجودُ سواهُ بيضةُ العقرِ

    He follows favor with another, habitually,

    While the generosity of others is the egg of the lizard

  33. له مناقبُ مجدٍ كلّها غررٌ

    في جبهة الدهر بل أبهى من الغرر

    He has glorious virtues, all precious pearls

    On the brow of time, nay more brilliant than pearls

  34. زواهرٌ في سماء الفضل دائرةٌ

    بمثلها فلكُ الخضراء لم يدر

    Blossoms in the sky of merit revolving

    With the likes of which the Green Sphere never circled

  35. رأى الثناءَ لباس الفخر تنسجُه

    يدُ النَّدى لذوي العلياء والخطر

    He saw praise, the garb of pride, woven

    By the hand of dew for the eminent and bold

  36. فجاد حتَّى دعاه البحرُ حسبك ما

    أبقى سماحُك لي فضلاً على البشر

    So he gave freely until the sea called "Enough! By your

    Generosity I have no boon left for mankind."

  37. وكلّ عنه لسانُ البرق ثم دعا

    بالرعد أكرمتَ إنِّي عنك ذو قصر

    And the tongue of lightning fell silent about him, then called

    With thunder "You have honored me, though I am but a palace."

  38. يُنمي إلى طيِّبي الأعراق مَن عقدوا

    على العفاف قديماً طاهرَ الأزر

    It brings into bloom, for those pure of lineage

    Who bound themselves long ago to chastity and bright wraps

  39. أعزَّةٌ نورُهم هادٍ ووجهُ مسا

    عيهم حسينٌ بليلِ الحادث النكر

    Radiant ones whose light is guiding, while the face

    Of their leisure is beautiful in the night of the unknown

  40. الوارثان من المهديِّ كلَّ عُلًى

    لأفقها طاهرُ الأوهام لم يطر

    The two inheritors from al-Muhdi every high place

    Their imaginings pure, no fly could land

  41. والباسطان لدى الجدوى أكفّهما

    سحائباً تمطرُ العافين بالبدر

    The two open-handed in usefulness, their palms

    Clouds that rain favors upon those seeking refuge

  42. والغالبان على الفخر الكرام معاً

    بحيثُ لم يدعا فخراً لمفتخر

    The two prevailing in merits together

    Such that they left no pride for the proud

  43. يا طيب فرع سماحٍ مثمرٍ بهما

    ما كلُّ فرع سماحٍ طيبُ الثمر

    O excellent branch of a fruitful benignity through them

    Not every benign branch bears pleasing fruit

  44. لم يطلعا غايةً للفخرِ ليس ترى

    شأواً بها لمجيد غير منحسر

    They did not rise to the limit of pride - do you not see

    Aspiration in which they glory but not vainglory

  45. إلاَّ وللمصطفى أبصرتَ ما لهما

    يوم الرهان من الإيرادِ والصدر

    But for the Chosen, you discern what they have

    On the day of trial, of preparation and resolve

  46. أغرُّ ما زهرت للشهب طلعته

    إلاَّ وغضتْ حياءً وجهُ منستر

    The loveliest blossom smiled at meteors

    Then lowered its face in shyness, hidden

  47. خذوا بني الشرف الوضَّاح كاعبةً

    مولودة الحسن بين البدو والحضر

    Take, sons of glorious clarity, a she-camel

    Born of beauty, between nomad and settled lands

  48. لم تجل في مجلسٍ إلاَّ بوصفكم

    تبسَّمتْ كابتسام الروض بالزهر

    She did not sit in an assembly but that, describing you,

    It smiled like the garden's smile with blossoms

  49. إن يُصدِ نقص أناسٍ فكرَ مادحهم

    ففضلكم صقيلُ الألباب والفكر

    If the minds of some fall short praising them

    Then your merit is the burnisher of intellect and thought

  50. لا زالَ بيتُ علاكم للورى حرماً

    يحجُّه الوفدُ مأموناً من الغِير

    Still your abode remains for mankind a sanctuary

    Which delegations circumambulate, safe from harm
