1. وراءكِ اليوم عن لهوي وعن طرَبي

    فإن قلبيَ أمسى كعبةَ النوبِ

    Behind you today, I leave my play and pleasure

    For now my heart has become like the Kaaba of Nuba

  2. لا تطمعي في وصالي إنَّ لي كبداً

    تهوى وصال العُلى لا الخُرَّد العرُب

    Do not hope for my love, for I have a liver

    That longs for the love of the exalted, not the lowly Arab

  3. أبعدَ حفظي لأسباب العُلى زمناً

    أضيعها لك بين اللهو واللعب

    After preserving the ways of the exalted for so long

    Would I waste it with you amid play and nonsense?

  4. ما بتُّ مستمطراً من مقلتي جزعاً

    نوء المدامع بين النؤى والطنب

    Never have I wept copiously out of sorrow

    The shedding of tears between vows and pleasure

  5. قدحُ الأسى البرق والرعد الحنين وأن

    فاسي الجنوبُ ودمعي ديمةُ السحب

    The cup of sorrow struck lightning and thunder of yearning

    While my side is being washed away and my tear is like a rain cloud

  6. ولا صبا أبداً قلبي لغانيةٍ

    إذ ليسَ في حُسنها شغلي ولا أربي

    Never will my heart incline to a singing girl

    For there is no preoccupation or desire of mine in her beauty

  7. في السُمر لا السُمر معقودٌ هوايَ ولل

    بيضِ الظُبا ليس للبيض الظِبا طرَبي

    In revelry it is not revelry that binds my love, and for

    The white gazelle, it is not the whiteness that brings me joy

  8. وما عشقتُ سوى بكر العُلى أبداً

    ولستُ أخطبها إلاَّ بذي شُطَب

    I have never loved but the virgin of the exalted

    And I do not court her except with lofty manner

  9. وطالما صرفُ هذا الدهر قلَّبني

    فلم يكن لسوى العلياء منقلبي

    Time has turned me around for so long

    That I do not turn except to the most high

  10. ما ضرَّني بين قومٍ خفضَ منزلتي

    ومنزلي فوق هام السبعة الشهُب

    It does not hurt me among people who debased my status

    For my status is above the seven planets

  11. وحسب نفسي وإن أصبحت ذا عُدمٍ

    من ثروةٍ أنَّني مُثر من الأدب

    It is enough for myself, even if I become destitute

    Of wealth, that I am fragrant with morals

  12. ولست آسي على عُمرٍ أطايبه

    أنفقتها في ابتغاء المجد في الكُرَب

    I do not grieve over a lifetime whose mornings

    I spent seeking glory in adversities

  13. يأسى على العمر من باتت تقلِّبُه

    في مطرح الذلِّ كفُّ الخوف والرهب

    One who spends the night tossing and turning

    In the pillow of disgrace, fear and apprehension grieves over life

  14. لم يسرق الدهرُ لي فضلاً ولا شرفاً

    وما ادِّعائي العُلى والمجد بالكذب

    Time did not steal any superiority or honor from me

    And my claiming of highness and glory is not a lie

  15. وإنَّها لمساعٍ لا نظيرَ لها

    ورثتها عن أبٍ من هاشم فأب

    These are unmatched efforts

    That I inherited from a father from Hashim thus I pride myself

  16. من معشرٍ عقدوا قِدماً مآزرهم

    على العفاف وكانوا أنجب العرب

    From a group who tied their loins

    To chastity and were the most noble of Arabs

  17. والأرض لم تبقَ منها بقعةٌ أبداً

    إلاَّ سقوها برقراق الدم السرب

    The earth did not remain a single spot

    That they did not water with the flow of pouring blood

  18. حتفُ الحُماة ومقدام السراة له

    في الروع سطوة هجّام على النوَب

    The death of protectors and brave chargers belongs to it

    In fright, an assault of lions on prey

  19. محضُ الضريبة مغوارُ الكتيبة مح

    مودُ النقيبة يوم السبق والغَلب

    The purely obligatory, the raging battalion, the protector

    Of the regiment on the day of surpassing and conquest

  20. في كفّه مرهفٌ ماضي المضارب في

    يوم القراع تراه ساطع اللهب

    In his grip is a sharpened sword, speedy in

    Strike on the day of clashing, you see it flaming

  21. يمضي ولم يعتلق في شفرتيه دمٌ

    من سرعة القطعِ يوم الروع والرهب

    He goes on and no blood clung on his blades

    From the speed of cutting on the day of fright and apprehension

  22. في موقفٍ بين أنياب الحمام به الآ

    سادُ لم تنجُ بالإِقدام والهرب

    In a stance between the fangs of doves through which the

    Lions could not escape with gallantry or fleeing

  23. أعيا المنيَّة حتَّى أنَّها سئمتْ

    قبض النفوس به من شدَّة التعب

    Death grew weary until it bored

    Of seizing souls through him from the intensity of exhaustion
