مرَّت بنا أمسِ تميميَّةٌ

ساحبةً أذيالها العاطره

A Tammimi girl passed by us yesterday

Dragging her perfumed train behind

آنسةُ الدلّ تُرى وهي إن

آنستَها وحشيَّةٌ نافره

Though she seemed to care for her lover's heart

A fierce, aloof girl she remained

قد جَذبت أحشاءَنا مذ غدت

ترمقنا بالنظرة الفاتره

She captivated our souls when she glanced

At us with her listless gaze

فانجَذَبت من شغفٍ نحوَها

تسبقُ منَّا الأرجلَ السائره

So we raced towards her, driven by passion

Though our hasty legs did falter and fail

وعادَ منَّا كلُّ ذي صبوةٍ

وفي حشاهُ رجله عاثره

And each ardent youth returned from her

Stumbling, fettered by unfulfilled desire
