Oh beloved friends, will the days bring you back?
I yearn for you though your likeness remains with me.
Greetings to those beautiful faces that are gone,
Their splendid time has passed fleetingly.
Though grief may seem empty without you,
In your absence, sorrow itself is desolate.
Whenever lightning flashes, I yearn for you,
My tears of longing are proof of my ache.
Only the agony of separation rends souls,
To cool my burning heart, but will embers cool?
I thought nothing surpassed estrangement,
Until what paled beside it came to pass.
No signs of loved ones kindle longing in me,
Nor does the past in my mind’s eye flow.
Without you, youth itself has gone,
A life without which no age endures.
You and fate pulled me from you,
I left you though my hand was empty.
Many a radiant face fate obscured,
The full moon could not touch such beauty.
Some called camphor the essence of beauty,
It borrows fragrance, but beauty is its own scent.
May God grant me after this day one near you,
And distance those whom the grave has taken.
Pause, and stock us, for this is but an hour,
Reunion's promise comes beyond the tomb.
You left and half my heart still dwells in your abodes,
While longing keeps the other half in my chest.
I bade you farewell as tears drowned us both,
On that day of sorrow, I and patience wept.
My waist complains of the burden on its back,
O waist, have mercy beneath this load!
When we met for parting and the camel's litter was laid,
Its unwearying back bore the pain of goodbye.
I clasped my ribs against the panic in my breast
That almost made it take flight in dread.
It was as if my heart's reins drew your luggage to it,
Binding me to you since our travel parted.
Without you, how my cooings find no comfort!
Even rocks are worn smooth by their laments.
I will mourn you as long as a bird cries in its nest,
For my heart, left without you, has no home.
