1. كم توعدُ الخيل في الهيجاء أَن تلجا

    ما آن في جَريها أَن تلبس الرّهجا

    How often do horses promise in the battle's heat, that they will charge,

    Yet when running they do not don the armor.

  2. وكم قنا الخط كفُّ المطلِ تفطُمها

    ما آن أن ترضع الأحشاءَ والمهجا

    And how often does the ink-filled pen refrain from weaning,

    Yet it does not suckle intestines and brain.

  3. وكم تعلِّلُ بيض الهندِ مغمدةً

    عَن الضراب ولمَّا تعترق وَدَجا

    And how often are the eggs of the hen cloaked,

    Safe from beating, until they hatch and chirp.

  4. يا ناهجاً في السرى قفراءَ موحشةً

    ما كان جانبها المرهوب منتهجا

    O lonely roamer in the expanse of the desert,

    Its frightening side was not a frequented path.

  5. صديان يقطع عرضَ البيد مقتعداً

    غوارب العيس لم يقعد بهنَّ وَجا

    Abounding coursers traversing the breadth of the white desert,

    The gray Arabian horses did not rest there.

  6. خذ من لِساني شكوى غَير خائبةٍ

    من ضيق ما نحن فيه تضمنُّ الفرجا

    Take from my tongue a complaint that does not fail,

    Of the tightness of what we are in, hoping for relief.

  7. تستنهض الحجةَ المهدي من خَتمَ

    الله العظيم به آباءه الحججا

    It rouses the guided proof, the Mahdi from the seal,

    God, the Almighty, sealed his fathers the proofs.

  8. لم يستتر تحتَ ليلِ الريبِ صبح هدًى

    إلاَّ وللخلق منه كان منبلجا

    The dawn of guidance did not hide beneath the darkness of doubt,

    Except that for people from it there emerged illumination.

  9. من نبعةٍ تثمرُ المعروفَ مورقةٍ

    في طينة المجد ساري عِرقها وشجا

    From a pure spring bearing known kindness,

    Flowing in the mud of glory, spreading its veins.

  10. المورد الخيلَ شقراً ثم يصدرها

    دُهماً عليها إهاب النقع قد نسجا

    The horse-waterer turns them pale then issues them forth,

    Gray upon them the forelocks of the hardy horses interwoven.

  11. والضارب الهام يوم الروع مجتهداً

    في الله ليس يرى في ضربِها حَرجا

    The fierce striker on the day of panic exerting effort

    In God, he does not see any shame in striking them.

  12. والطَّاعن الطعنة النجلاء لو وقعت

    في صدر يذبلَ وهو الصلد لانفرجا

    The piercing thrust, if it landed

    In a withering chest, even if resolute, it would be split.

  13. والملقح الغارة الشعواء في أُسدٍ

    من كلّ شيخ نُهى نجدٍ وكهل حِجى

    The charging of the valiant raid into lions,

    From every old man of Najd and elder of Hijaz cautioned.

  14. الفارجين مَضيق الكرب إن نُدبوا

    والكاشفين ظلام الخطب حين دجى

    Relieving the distress of hardship when called upon,

    And dispelling the darkness of calamities when it gathered.

  15. إن ضلَّلتهم سماء النقع يوم وغًى

    كانت وجوههم في لَيلها سُرجا

    If the sky of Najd misguided them one tempestuous day,

    Their faces in its night would have been illuminated.

  16. يا مدرك الثار كم يَطوي الزمان على

    إمكان إدراكه الأعوامَ والحججا

    O fulfiller of vengeance, how much time conceals

    The possibility of fulfilling it, years and eras.

  17. لا نومَ حتَّى تعيدَ الشمَّ عزمتكم

    قاعاً بها لا ترى أمتاً ولا عِوجا

    No sleep until your determination returns

    Upright, whereby you see no nation deviating.

  18. في موقفٍ يخلطُ السبع البحارَ معاً

    بمثلها من نجيع قد طغت لُججا

    In a standstill that mixes the seven seas together,

    As much as it from the flood overflowed barriers.

  19. من عُصبةٍ ولجت يوم الطفوف على

    هزبركم غاب عزٍّ قطّ ما وُلجا

    From a faction that attacked on the day of the eclipse,

    Upon your clan, glory absent from them, did not return.

  20. يوم تجهَّم وجه الموت فيه وقد

    لاقى ابن فاطمةٍ جذلانَ مبتهجا

    The day the face of death frowned, so

    The son of Fatima cheerfully encountered skulls.

  21. في فتيةٍ كسيوف الهندِ قد فتحوا

    من مُغلق الحرب في سمر القنا الرُّتجا

    Amongst youths like Indian swords that opened

    From the fortress of war in the thickets of canebrake.

  22. وأضرموها على الأعداءِ ساعرةً

    ثم اصطلوا دونه من جمرها الوهجا

    And ignited it upon the enemies raging,

    Then sought shade from its embers' blaze.

  23. ضَراغمٌ إن دعا داعي الكفاح بهم

    نزى من الرعب قلب الموت واختلجا

    Valiant men, if the caller to struggle summons them,

    They diminish the heart of death from fear and make it tremble.

  24. ما فُوخِروا في الوغى إلاَّ قضت لهم

    غمارُها أنَّهم كانوا لها ثبجا

    They were not prideful in the fray except that

    Its darkness ordained for them that they were its kindling.

  25. من كلّ أغلبَ في الهيجاء صعدتهُ

    ترى تمائمها الأكبادَ والمُهجا

    From every usurper in the battle's heat ascended,

    You see its banners the livers and the brains.

  26. أشمُّ ينشقُ أرواح المنونِ إذا

    تفاوحت بين أطراف القنا أرجا

    I smell the souls of the dying split open when

    The edges of the canebrake rustled amongst themselves.

  27. أو أصحرته لدى روع حفيظتُه

    فقلب كلّ هزبر لم يكن ثلِجا

    Or the fervor of his zeal on the day of panic,

    So the heart of each clan was not frozen.

  28. بيض الوجوه قضوا والخيلُ ضاربةٌ

    رواقَ ليل من النقع المُثار سجا

    Pale faced they passed and the horses striking

    The corridor of a night whose hardy horses were stirred.

  29. وغُودرت في شعاب الطف نسوَتهُم

    يَجهشنَ وجداً متى طفلٌ لها نشجا

    And their women were rolled in the tracts of the land,

    Lamenting whenever a child of theirs whimpered.

  30. من كلّ صادية الأحشاء ناهلةٍ

    من دَمعها والشجى في صدرها اعتلجا

    From every grieving entrail, lamenting,

    With anguish in her chest convulsing.

  31. تدعو فيخرجَ دفّاعُ الزفير حشى

    صدورِها ويردّ الكظم ما خرجا

    She prays so the expulsion of sighs burst forth

    The chests, and patience returns what came out.

  32. لا صبر آل فِهرٍ وابن فاطمةٍ

    يُمسي وكان أمانَ الناس مُنزعجا

    No patience for the family of Fahr and the son of Fatima,

    Spending the night while the people's place of security was shaken.

  33. مقلقلاً ضاقت الأرض الفضاءُ به

    حتَّى على لفح نيران الظما درجا

    Distraught, the vast earth narrowed around him,

    Until upon the flames of embers he climbed.

  34. قد قضى بفؤاد حرّ غُلته

    لو قُلِّب الصخر يوماً فوقه نَضُجا

    With the heart of a free man his torment fulfilled,

    If one day a boulder rolled over it would have cooked.

  35. ألله أكبر آل الله مشربهم

    بين الورى بذعاف الموت قد مُزجا

    God is the greatest, the family of God quenched their thirst

    Amongst mankind with the bowl of death mixed.

  36. مروّعون وهم أمن المروع غدا

    وِسع الفضاء عليهم ضيِّقاً حرجا

    Terrifying yet they are the refuge of the terrified the next day,

    The expanse constricted upon them, hindered.

  37. قد ضرِّج السيفُ منهم كل ذي نسكٍ

    بغير ذكر إله العرش ما لَهِجا

    The sword from them bloodied all the pious

    Without mention of the God of the Throne it blazed.

  38. فغُودرت في الثَّرى صرعى جسومهم

    وفي نفوسهم لله قد عُرجا

    So their fallen bodies were rolled into the soil,

    And into their souls to God they ascended.
