1. أَأُهنِّيك قائلاً لك بشرى

    أو أُعزِّيك قائلاً لك صبرا

    Should I congratulate you saying good tidings,

    Or console you saying patience?

  2. فرحة أردفت بترحة ثكلٍ

    ساءَ فيها الزمانُ ساعةَ سرَّا

    Joy followed by bereavement,

    The time has been good and bad.

  3. شفعت فيه أوبةٌ بذهابٍ

    فمنحنا سجلين نفعاً وضرَّا

    A calamity followed by loss,

    Giving us two records, benefit and harm.

  4. ملأا بالسرور للمجدِ شطراً

    من حشاه وبالكآبة شطرا

    One filled with joy for glory,

    The other with sorrow.

  5. زمنٌ آبَ بالسعود حميداً

    بعدما أقلقَ الركائب عصرا

    A time that came with good fortune,

    After disturbing the riders for a while.

  6. قلت ألقى العصا وما كنتُ أدري

    أنَّ فيها له مآربَ أُخرى

    I said I would give up, and I did not know

    That it had other purposes for it.

  7. بينما تكتسي وجوهُ الليالي

    رونقاً للسرور إذ عدن غبرا

    While the faces of the nights are adorned

    With the luster of joy when they return from dust.

  8. خيرُ يومٍ بدا بحلَّةِ زهوٍ

    ما له تحتها تأبَّط شرَّا

    The best day that began with pride,

    Nothing under it is inflicted with evil.

  9. يا خليليَّ والحديثُ شجونٌ

    فأجيلا معي إلى الحزم فكرا

    My friend, the talk is sorrows,

    So think wisely with me.

  10. خبراني عن الصواب برشدٍ

    إن تكونا أحطتما فيه خبرا

    Tell me the truth with guidance,

    If you have gained any knowledge of it.

  11. كانَ لي في الأُمور قلبٌ ولكن

    بمقاديم دهشتي طارَ ذعرا

    I used to have insight into matters, but

    With the events, my astonishment took flight.

  12. قد وفدنا لكي نهنِّي المعالي

    فوجدنا العيونَ منهنَّ عبرى

    We came to congratulate the eminent one,

    But found the eyes shedding tears.

  13. فبماذا أُواجهُ الفخرَ أم في

    أيِّ شيءٍ أُخاطبُ المجدَ جهرا

    How then shall I face the pride, or

    In what shall I address the glory openly?

  14. أبنعيٍ فأنثرُ الشجوَ دمعاً

    أم أُحيِّي فأنظم السعدَ شعرا

    Shall I wail spreading the night rain of sorrows,

    Or shall I celebrate composing poetry of joy?

  15. فالليالي أقررن للجودِ عيناً

    وعلى النعيِّ منه أقذين أُخرى

    For generosity the nights have sanctioned an eye,

    And for bereavement they have sanctioned another.

  16. ومن المكرمات أبكين جفناً

    بعدما للسعودِ أضحكن ثغرا

    And they sanctioned an eyelid for honors,

    After laughing a mouth for good fortune.

  17. طبت يا أرضُ بينَ حيٍّ وميتٍ

    بالشذا عطَّراك بطناً وظهرا

    You have prospered, O land, between a living and a dead,

    The perfume scenting your belly and back.

  18. فعزاءً لمصطفى المجد عن مَن

    خلت بالمصطفى أهنِّيه بشرى

    As condolences for Mustafa from one

    Who has passed with Mustafa, I congratulate him.

  19. رحلت بالجواد أيامُ دهرٍ

    أين مرَّت من بعده قيل عقرا

    The days of time traveled with the noble one,

    Where did they pass after him, it is said to the grave.

  20. كانَ بالأمسِ أنظرَ الناس ربعاً

    وهو اليوم أطيبُ الناس قبرا

    Yesterday he looked upon people as a leader,

    Today he is the best of people in the grave.

  21. يا بني المصطفى وبيتُ نداكم

    قد بنى طائرُ الرجا فيه وكرا

    O family of Mustafa, your home

    Where the bird of aspiration nested in it.

  22. شدتموه على التقى يهدمُ الدهرَ

    ويبقى بناؤه مشمخرَّا

    You commanded him with piety, he destroys time,

    And his building remains lofty.

  23. لستُ أدري أَأودعَ المجدُ منكم

    بشراً فيه أم ملائك غرَّا

    I do not know, did the glory entrust to you

    Humans in whom it glories, or honored angels?

  24. خلَّد المصطفى به لكم الفخرَ

    وزدتم بالمصطفى اليومَ فخرا

    Mustafa immortalized the pride for you,

    And you have today increased pride in Mustafa.

  25. أرجُ المجد لو تجسَّم نشراً

    من شذاه لعطَّر الأرضَ نشرا

    I wish glory would embody diffusion

    Its aroma would perfume the land diffusion.

  26. ولودَّت أترابُها الغيدُ أن قد

    جعلته على الترائبِ عطرا

    And its clouds would give birth, if they

    Made it their perfume upon the meadows.

  27. بسط الكفَّ بالسماح فقلنا

    أرسلت نوءها الثريَّا فدرَّا

    He stretched out his palm with generosity, so we said

    He unleashed its rivers abundantly.

  28. ملكٌ في يديه عشرُ بنانٍ

    نشأت للورى سحائبَ عشرا

    A King whose hands hold ten fingers

    Raised for people ten clouds.

  29. زاد في قدره التواضعُ حتَّى

    عاد منه الزمانُ يصعر قدرا

    Humility increased his worth until

    Time itself was amazed by his worth.

  30. فهو قلبُ العُلى وأيُّ مكانٍ

    حلَّ فيه تواضعاً كانَ صدرا

    He is the heart of the eminent, and which place

    He settled in with humility became a breast.

  31. بل هو العقدُ زانها وكذا العق

    دُ يزين الفتاةَ جيداً ونحرا

    Rather, he is the jewel that adorned it, and thus the jewel

    Adorns the maiden's neck and breast handsomely.

  32. لو تحكُّ النجومُ في عاتقيها

    أخمصيه لقيل حسبُك فخرا

    If the stars told on her shoulders and feet

    It would be said, "You have enough pride."

  33. أطبقت ظلمةُ الخطوب ولكن

    بأخيه من ليلها شقَّ فجرا

    The darkness of sorrows has come, but

    Through his brother a dawn broke from its night.

  34. فأرانا شمساً بوجه أبي الها

    دي وشمنا به ولا ليلَ بدرا

    So he showed us a sun with the face of Abul Hadi

    And we smelled it, and no night remains for the full moon.

  35. ذاك مَن أزهرت مزايا علاهُ

    فبدت والكواكبُ الزهر زهرا

    That is the one whose merits blossomed

    Appearing while the stars are flowers.

  36. جاءَ محضَ النجار أملسَ عرضٍ

    فيها طابت حواضنُ المجد حجرا

    The carpenter came smooth of manner

    In which the cradles of glory settled as pebbles.

  37. عبقَ الجيب طاهرَ الردن والأذ

    يال عفّ الأزار سرًّا وجهرا

    The pocket smelled good, the thigh and arm

    Were chaste, the waist pure secretly and openly.

  38. قد حلتْ لي أخلاقه في زمانٍ

    قلتُ لمَّا طعمته ما أمرَّا

    His morals came to me in a time

    When I tasted it I said, “How bitter!”

  39. علمتني هي النظام إلى أن

    قيلَ لي أنتَ أشعرُ الناس طرا

    It taught me order until

    It was said, “You are the most poetic of people.”

  40. وأداروا لي المدامة منها

    ثم قالوا تحبُّها قلتُ بهرا

    And they passed me the cup from it

    Then said, “Do you love it?” I said confused.

  41. ماجدٌ تطرب المسامعُ منه

    من رقيق الثناء ما كانَ حرا

    Majid whom ears are delighted by

    From the delicate praise that was not hot.

  42. وإذا مرَّ في العطا ودَّ فيه

    مجلسُ الجود لم يزل مستمرَّا

    And if he passes in generosity, the assembly

    Of generosity does not cease to flow.

  43. لا كمن إن تكلَّف الرفدَ يوماً

    أكلتْ كفَّه الندامةُ دهرا

    Not like one who if he rarely gives

    Regret eats his palm for ages.

  44. ففداءاً لشبره باع قومٍ

    لم تقس في ذراعها منه فترا

    He has sacrificed his span for people

    Whose arm could not measure any gap from him.

  45. مدَّ لكن يداً صناع العطايا

    طرّزت بردتيه حمداً وشكرا

    Yet he stretched out a hand the makers of gifts have adorned

    Embroidering my robe with thanks and gratitude.

  46. لا تفاخر به المجرَّة إلاَّ

    إن ترد تكسب المجرةَ فخرا

    Do not boast about it but the Milky Way

    Unless it wants to gain pride from the Milky Way.

  47. فهو بحرٌ ويقذف الدرَّ جوداً

    وهي نهرٌ وليس يقذف درَّا

    For he is an ocean who throws pearls of generosity

    While it is a river that does not throw pearls.

  48. وهو والمصطفى بنادي العُلى شف

    عٌ وكلٌّ يقوم في القوم وترا

    He and Mustafa are in the eminent association

    Each standing among the people as a lute string.

  49. حفظا حوزةَ السماح وكلٌّ

    دونها للعذول كم سدَّ ثغرا

    Protecting the precinct of generosity while anyone

    Besides it, how many breaches he has blocked!

  50. فدمُ المكرمات لو لم يجيئا

    لنعته يتائم الشعر هدرا

    If the blood of favors had not come

    Poetry would harmonize about it randomly.

  51. قد غرسنا فأثمر النظمُ حمداً

    وسقيتم فأينع الجودُ وفرا

    We have planted so poetry has borne praise,

    And you have watered so generosity has thrived and given fruit.

  52. لسواه يا عاصراً حلبَ الفكر

    بكفِّ الخسار تعصر خمرا

    For other than it, O contemporary, milk the mind's udder

    With the palms of loss, you squeeze wine!

  53. أيُّها الطيّبون معقدَ أزرٍ

    لكم اللهُ شدَّ بالنصر أزرا

    O good people, the knot of resolve is for you

    May God strengthen resolve’s knot with victory.

  54. ذكركم بالجميل سارَ ولكن

    كمسير الرياح برًّا وبحرا

    Mentioning you with good has continued, but

    Like the winds' passage, on land and sea.

  55. قرَّت الأرضُ بالجبال وكانت

    هي والراسياتُ فيكم أقرَّا

    The land has settled with mountains, and it and the firm mountains

    In you have settled.

  56. هاكموها بكرَ القريض وعنها

    سائلاها هل مثلها افتضَّ بكرا

    Are there any like it that burst forth early?

    Besides sorcery, no consciousness will toil,

  57. بسوى السحر لن تعب أي وعي

    ب البابليات إنَّه كانَ سحرا

    It was verily sorcery.

    It mixed the comfort of joy with harm,

  58. مزجت راحةَ السرور بضرٍّ

    فأذاقت طعمين حلواً ومرَّا

    So it tasted two flavors, sweet and bitter.

    It worried about its poetry, and not everyone who worries

  59. همت في عفرها وما كلُّ من ها

    مَ بوادي القريض يصطاد عفرا

    In the lands of poetry hunts poetry.

    Its embellishment adorned pages so look

  60. زانَ تحبيرُها الطروسَ ففتّش

    ما عداها تجده طرساً وحبرا

    Beyond it, you will find it pages and embellishment.
