1. هذا كتابٌ أم حديقة روضةٍ

    تتنزَّه الأحداقُ في أورادها

    Is this a book or a garden, a meadow

    In which eyes promenade among its roses

  2. وتودُّ لو شرتْ العيونُ بياضهُ

    وسوادَه ببياضها وسوادها

    How they wish they could buy its whiteness

    And blackness with their whiteness and blackness

  3. نظمت بع غرر الكلام مصاقعٌ

    روحُ الفصاحة قام في أجسادها

    Phrases of polished words built palaces

    The spirit of eloquence rose in their bodies

  4. غرراً بدت كالشهب إلاَّ أنَّها

    بزغت بليلٍ من سوادِ مدادها

    Gems that seemed like shooting stars

    Though they shone at night by the ink's darkness

  5. لو شنَّف الشادي الحَمام بها إذن

    خلعت له الأطواق من أجيادها

    If a passionate man sung them as verse

    Their meters would grant him the finest steeds

  6. يهوى فؤادُ المرء يغدو مسمعاً

    ليحوز حظَّ السمع من إنشادها

    One's heart becomes an eager listener

    To gain the fortune of hearing their chant

  7. لفظٌ أرقُّ من الصبا وفخامة

    معناه قُدَّ من أطوادها

    Words smoother than the morning breeze in grandeur

    Their meaning drawn from the tallest spears

  8. دعْ ما يزخرفه الربيعُ وإن زهتْ

    أزهاره بين الربى ووهادها

    Leave what spring adorns though flowers bloom

    Among pastures and valleys in its meadows

  9. وتصفَّح الروضَ الخميل فرغبةً

    لثراه تنسي العينُ طيب رقادها

    And browse the beautiful garden longing

    For its scent makes eyes forget sweet slumber

  10. تحظى بكلِّ طريفةٍ من حسنها

    غدت العقولُ العشر من روَّادها

    It attains every charm in its beauty

    Minds become its constant visitors

  11. ويعدُّ من آل الجميل مناقباً

    تهوى النجومُ تكون من أعدادها

    And counts among the finest virtues

    Stars desire to be within its numbers
