1. حيتكَ سارقةُ اللحاظ من الظِبا

    تجلو المدامَ فحيّ ناعمةَ الصِبا

    Your smile steals glances like a gazelle

    That charms wine and the soft morning breeze

  2. جاءتكَ تَبسمُ والبنان نقابُها

    فأرتكَ بدراً بالهلال تنقّبا

    You came smiling, your incisors veiled

    So you shone like a full moon at dusk

  3. وكأَنَّها هي حين زَفَّت كأسها

    شمسٌ تزفُّ من المدامةِ كوكبا

    When you raised your cup it was as though

    A sun rose gleaming from the wine

  4. عقدت على الوسط النطاقَ مفوَّقاً

    ولوت على الخصر الوشاحَ مذهّبا

    You tied your sash wrapped at the waist

    And wound round your hips a gilded sash

  5. أحبب إليك بها عشيقةَ مُغرمٍ

    راض العواذلُ شوقَه فتعصّبا

    I loved that you came to me a passionate lover

    Whose longing the gentle gazelles shared

  6. هي تلك لاعبةُ العشاء ومن لها

    ألفت بناتُ الشوقِ قلبك ملعبا

    You are the one who plays at night, and for you

    The daughters of passion made your heart their playground

  7. أمسيتَ منها ناعماً بغريزةٍ

    بنسيم ريَّاها تعطَّرت الصَبا

    You made me gentle with your nature

    By a breeze whose perfume filled the morning

  8. ونديمةٍ لك لو تغنَّى باسمها

    حجر لرقَّصه غناها مطربا

    My boon companion, if he sang your name

    Even a rock would dance enthralled

  9. سكبت بكأس حديثها من لفظها

    راحاً ألذَّ من المدام وأعذبا

    From your words you poured a gentler, sweeter draught

    Than wine or anything more delicious

  10. وترنَّمت هزجاً فأطربَ لحنُها

    قُمريَّ مائسةَ الأراكِ فطرّبا

    You sang melodiously, your tune enthralling

    The bright full moons and making them dance

  11. فكأَنَّما علمت بعرس المصطفى

    فشدت غناً لابن الأراكةِ أطربا

    As if you knew of the Prophet's wedding feast

    And sang especially for the Son of Arakah

  12. في ليلةٍ طابت فساعةُ أُنسها

    لم تلقَ عمرَ الدهر منها أَطيبا

    On a night whose felicity in that hour

    Was the most blessed in time’s span

  13. وَفَدَ السرورُ بها لمغنى أصيدٍ

    كرماً يحيي الوافدينَ مُرحّبا

    Joy came to entertain and feast,

    Honoring guests with utmost hospitality

  14. شملت مسرَّته البريَّة كلَّها

    إذ كان في كلِّ النفوس محبّبا

    Its gladness encompassed the whole land

    For he was beloved to every soul

  15. فكأَنَّ عُرس المصطفى فيه الورى

    كلّ محمدُ صالحٍ أَن يطربا

    So it was as if all good souls

    Rejoiced at the Prophet's wedding

  16. قد عاد مغربُها يهنِّي شرقَها

    فيه ومشرقُها يهنِّي المغربا

    From his sunset the west congratulated the east

    And from his dawn the east greeted the west

  17. فرحوا وحقَّ لهم به أن يفرحوا

    من حيثُ أنَّ الدهر فيه أغربا

    They rightly rejoiced, for the age

    In it was most wondrously strange

  18. في الشيب جاء به سروراً لم يجئ

    في مثله مُذ كان مقتبلُ الصِبا

    In old age it brought a joy never known

    To any who were fresh faced in youth

  19. هو في الأنام صنيعةٌ مشكورة

    للدهر ما صحبوا لِساناً معربا

    For mankind it is a thing to thank

    That they have not lost their purest eloquence

  20. للكرخ ناعمةَ الهبوب تحمّلي

    منّي سلاماً من نسيمك أطيبا

    To the soft-blowing south wind of Karkh convey

    My finest greetings borne on your fragrance

  21. وصلي إلى بيت قد انتجع الورى

    منه جناباً بالمكارم مُعشبا

    And send prayers to the house the world

    Has flourished from, ever verdant

  22. بيت على الزوراء يقطر نعمةً

    فكأَنَّه بالغيث كان مطنَّبا

    The house in Zurah that drips blessings

    As if from rain it gushed and flooded

  23. قولي إذا حييتِ فيه بالرضا

    فسواكِ منه هيبةً لن يقرُبا

    Say, when you greet it, satisfied,

    None but you can draw near it in awe

  24. بشراكَ بسَّام العشيّ بفرحةٍ

    ضحكت بها الدنيا إليك تطرُّبا

    Give glad tidings with a cheerful early night

    That the world smiles and dances to you

  25. وجلا عليك اليمنَ فيها طلعةً

    غرَّاء ساطع سعدها لن يغربا

    And the auspicious time shone on you

    A radiant rising whose fortune never sets

  26. فاسعد بقرّة ناظريك فقد غدا

    في عُرسه المجدُ المؤثّلُ معجبا

    So delight in the coolness of your sight, for glory

    Has risen resplendent, wondrous to behold

  27. أمقيلَ مَن لبس الهجير تغرُّباً

    ومعرّسَ السارين تنزِعُ لغّبا

    Pitiful is he who wore the striped cloak in exile

    While the master of the lofty palace casts it off

  28. عجباً لهذا الدهر يصحب بُخلَه

    ولجود كفّك ليس يبرح مُصحَبا

    How strange is time, accompanying its stinginess

    While your generosity never leaves its side

  29. ويرى جبينك كيفَ يُشرقُ لِلندى

    كرماً ويغدو الوجه منه مقطَّبا

    It sees your shining brow in its nobility

    While from it faces bloom and split like buds

  30. أرحبتَ للأضياف دارةَ جفنةٍ

    من دارة القمر الوسيعة أرحبا

    For guests you opened up pupils dark as caves

    More vast than the moon’s empty wideness

  31. وحملت عبء بني الزمان ولو به

    يُعنى أبوهم لاستقالك مُتعبا

    You shouldered the age’s load, which would have wearied

    Even if their fathers bore but some of its burden

  32. وأما ومجدك خلفةً لو لم يكن

    للعالمين سجالُ جودك مشربا

    As for your glory, even if none wrote

    Of your generosity the world’s register

  33. نَزفَ اغترافُهم البحارَ وبعدها

    ترك اعتصارهمُ الغمائمَ خُلّبا

    Their drawing but a sip exhausted the oceans,

    And after them their wringing out the clouds was miserly

  34. فمتى تقوم بحارُها وقطارُها

    لهم مقامك ما جرت وتصبَّبا

    So when can the oceans and trains of clouds

    Match your stature, surging and flooding forth

  35. يفدي أناملكَ الرطيبة مُعجبٌ

    في يبس أنملةٍ بعذلك أسهبا

    One in dire thirst would ransom your moist fingers

    Over his own shriveled and withered ones

  36. لو مسَّ وجه الأرض يبسُ بنانه

    لرأيته حتَّى القيامة مُجدبا

    If a drought afflicted the earth’s face

    You would see it barren till resurrection’s dawn

  37. عذبت مذاقة لا بفيه لبخله

    وبفيك طعمُ نعم غدا مستعذبا

    You sweetened the taste of one whose mouth was stingy

    While your mouth made blessings taste most sweet

  38. فازدادَ حتَّى في مَعيشة نفسهِ

    ضيقاً وللوفّاد زدتَ ترحّبا

    So that even for his own subsistence

    Straitness increased, while for guests you gave openly

  39. تسع الزمانَ بجود كفّك باسماً

    ويضيق صَدر الدهر منك مقطَّبا

    You encompassed time’s breadth with your palm’s generosity

    While time's breast from you cleft and split

  40. لورعتَ مُهجة نفسه وَزحمته

    لفطرتها وَحطمتَ منه المنكبا

    You restrained your soul's whims and broke

    Its infatuation, crushing its shoulders

  41. وَلقد جريتَ إلى العَلاء بهمَّةٍ

    لم ترضَ عالية المجرَّة مركبا

    You hastened to excel with a resolve

    Before which the meteors’ path seemed too high

  42. حلَّقت حيث الطرفُ عنك مقصرٌ

    فصعدت حيث النجم عنك تصوَّبا

    You soared to where eyes fell short of you

    And climbed to where the stars aimed below you

  43. شهدت قناة المجد أنَّك صدرُها

    وَعدا أخيك غدا الأماجدُ أكعبا

    The stream of glory confessed that you were its bosom

    While beside you glory's waves were arduous

  44. ما قمت يوم الفخر وحدك موكباً

    إلاَّ وقامَ به مثالُك موكبا

    Whenever you marched alone in pride

    Your example marched with you in parade

  45. أصبحت منتسباً لغرِّ أماجدٍ

    ودَّت لهم شهب السما أن تُنسبا

    You became affiliated with the cave of glories

    To which the stars incline to be appended

  46. هم أيكة الشرف التي منها الورى

    ثمرُ السماحة ما اجتنوه مرجّبا

    They are the nobility's gems, from which the world

    Plucked the ripe fruit of generosity unplundered

  47. طابت أرُومتها العريقة في العُلى

    وسقت مكارمُها ثراها الطيّبا

    Their lofty roots flourished on high

    And their virtues irrigated their goodly yield

  48. وكفى بجودك وهو أعدلُ شاهدٍ

    يصف الذي من جودها قد غيبا

    Your generosity is the most just witness

    To describe one whose generosity they eclipsed

  49. ولقد تحقَّقتُ اسمَ غادية الحيا

    فوجدت معناه نداك الصيّبا

    And truly when I contemplated an easy life

    I found its meaning to be your youth

  50. وأجلت فكري في اسم أنفاس الصَبا

    فإذا به خلق الرضا قد لقّبا

    And when I examined the name of the morning breeze

    I found it termed the spirit of contentment

  51. سيماءُ عزِّك في أسرَّة وجهه

    لله أنت فهكذا مَن أنجبا

    The mark of your honor in its features

    By God, none but you can bring this into being

  52. زيّنت أُفق الفخر منك بكوكبٍ

    ما كان أزهره بفخرك كوكبا

    You adorned glory's sky with a star

    That by your glory was the brightest star

  53. فالشمس قد ودَّت وإن هي أعقبت

    قمرَ السماءِ نظيره أن تُعقبا

    For the sun, though it follows, wished

    To follow the moon, its peer, with a successor

  54. قد غاض فيضُ ابن الفرات لجوده

    إذ كان أغزر من نداه وأعذبا

    Compared to your flowing bounty the Euphrates' torrent waned

    For it was more copious and sweeter than its stream

  55. لا تطر كعباً واطوِ حاتم طيء

    وانشر مكارمَه تجدها أغربا

    Do not vie with Hatim of Tayy, just unfold

    His virtues and you will find them stranger

  56. واترك له معناً على ما فيه من

    كرمٍ فمعنٌ لو رآه تعجَّبا

    And mention him only for his great

    Generosity, which if seen, would astound

  57. ودع الخصيب فلو تملَّك ملكه

    الهادي لجاد به لفرد أتربا

    Leave Khaseeb, for had he ruled his kingdom

    Al-Hadi would have given it singly to surpass him

  58. الجامع الحَمد الذي لم يجتمع

    والواهبُ الرفدَ الذي لن يُوهبا

    The Perfect, the Ultimate Praise, who was never attained

    The Giver, the Sustenance that will never be exhausted

  59. خلقتَ أدرَّ من السحائب كفُّه

    بل أُنشأت منها أعمَّ وأخصبا

    Your palms poured forth more plentiful than clouds

    Rather, they were more comprehensive and fertile than them

  60. هو خير من ضمَّت معاقدُ حبوةٍ

    وأخوه فخراً خير من عَقد الحُبا

    They are better than however many bracelets of love and devotion

    Were clasped, and his brother more glorious than a single clasp

  61. طلعا طلوعَ النيرين فما رأى

    أُفق المكارم مُذ أنارا غيهبا

    They rose like the two brilliances, and since they illuminated

    The horizon of generosity had not glimpsed the like

  62. فعُلاهما في المجد أبعدُ مرتقًى

    ونداهما للوفد أقربُ مطلبا

    For loftiness in glory they were the farthest ascent

    And for guests the nearest place sought

  63. أبقيَّةَ الكرم الذين سواهم

    لم يتَّخذ نهجُ المكارم مذهبا

    Those others who emulated them

    The path of generosity adopted no doctrine

  64. لا زلتم في نعمةٍ ومسرَّةٍ

    ما دام ظهر الأرض يحمل كبكُبا

    You remain in bounty and delight

    As long as the lofty expanse bears any star
