1. كذا يلج الموتُ غابَ الأُسود

    وتُدفن رضوى ببطن اللحود

    Thus does death creep into the lair of the black lions

    And Rizwa is buried in the belly of graves

  2. كذا يُستباح حريمُ العُلى

    وتهوي بدور الهُدى في الصعيد

    Thus is the sanctuary of the exalted violated

    And the houses of guidance collapse into the dust

  3. بنفسيَ من لم يرثه ذووه

    غير علاءٍ ومجدٍ مشيد

    By my life, for those left with no mourners

    Except glory and enduring monuments

  4. وكُبَّت جفانُ القِرى بعده

    ونيرانها رُميت بالخمود

    The eyelids of the villages weep for him after

    And their fires are extinguished into stillness

  5. أحلفَ الندى وشقيق السماح

    ليومكَ هولٌ كيوم الورود

    I swear by the dew and intimate of forgiveness

    Yours was a terrible day, like the day of roses

  6. سُقيت الحيا لست أنت الفقيد

    ولكنَّ صبريَ عينُ الفقيد

    The snakes were watered, you were not the deceased

    But my patience was the eye of the deceased

  7. فلا قلتُ بعدك للعيشِ طب

    ولا قلتُ بعدك للسحب جودي

    So I no longer said to life “welcome”

    Nor to the clouds “give freely” after you

  8. لقد دلَّ مجدُك هذا الطريفَ

    على مجدِ قومك ذاك التليد

    For your glory pointed this place

    To the ancient glory of your people

  9. بني هاشمٍ هم عقودٌ وأن

    تَ واسطةٌ بين تلك العقود

    The Hashimites, they are like beads

    And you were the thread between those beads

  10. ولو كانَ يُدفع ريبُ المنون

    عن المرءِ في عُدَّةٍ أو عديد

    Had the doubt of death been deflected

    From a man, in periods or time

  11. لقامت تقيك الردى فتيةٌ

    تُذمُّ إذا شُبِّهت بالأُسود

    Your chivalry would have stood up to the calamity

    Young lions that, when likened to the black lions

  12. صِباحُ الوجوه وأسيافهم

    من الموت تُطبع لا من حديد

    The brightness of their faces and their swords

    Cast not from iron but from death

  13. وتغدو المنايا بأرماحهم

    شوارعَ ما بين حمرٍ وسود

    And by their spears the deaths

    Become streets between red and black

  14. ولكنَّه الموتُ لا مانعٌ

    لمن رامَ من سادةٍ أو عبيد

    But death has no preventing

    For those of masters or slaves it sought

  15. عزاءً أبا صالحٍ لا فجعتَ

    من بعد هذا المصاب الكؤود

    Condolences, Abu Salih, do not agonize

    After this grievous calamity

  16. فحلمُك أرسى من الراسيات

    وليس شبيهٌ له في الوجود

    For your forbearance is firmer than firmaments

    And has no equal in existence

  17. وجاراك في الفخرِ أهلُ السباق

    ولكن سبقت لشأوٍ بعيد

    Your neighbors vie in glory

    But you outpaced them to distant heights

  18. فصبحَ شأنُهم في انحدارٍ

    وشأنك عنهم غدا في صعود

    Thus did their status go into decline

    While yours from theirs continues rising

  19. وما مرَّ يومٌ جديدٌ عليك

    إلاَّ ظهرت بفضلٍ جديد

    No new day passed upon you

    Except you appeared with new favor

  20. لئن ساءك الدهرُ في جعفرٍ

    فإنَّ الإِساءةَ شأنُ العبيد

    If time wronged you through Ja'far

    Then wrongdoing is the way of slaves
