I kept you in reserve should fate treat me harshly

Trusting in you I stand firm despite misfortunes

And I said, “My father”, though the matter is God’s will

So you are my brother, and God suffices me

I distracted myself from you by finding comfort

In you, while my hopeful eyes brim with tears

When troubles befell me overwhelming its banks

And flooded both East and West before my eyes

I descended into despair, wandering blindly

And said “Turn me back!” for I longed for sweet water

I relied on you in times of great tribulation

To lift its heavy burdens and untangle hardship

And I hoped in you to subdue the enemy host

But my hopes in you were in vain if they were false

How could this be when you are the gleaming sword

When I have reproached you for being blunted?
