I have unsheathed my sword and bared my arm, and here is my forearm

Time has passed taking my youth and my peers

The arrows of misfortunes have struck my eyelids

So what can I protect from my cheek?

What is it, O Time, that you threaten me with

Or do you still have more in store for me?

The world has struck me in some way

It has exhausted me, my sides and my forehead

It left no breadth in my chest before surprising

Me, my chest feels tight though it is broad

Now misfortunes make up my sides

Aiming at my strength to destroy it

Disasters have sprung up against me in pairs

Their winding road cannot be traced

And problems have come to me from a lofty peak

That cannot be scaled by climbing

They have taken from my hands a white banner

That I had prepared to face dark misfortunes

I was inclined to patience when I lost it

But then I lost even my patience

Shall I withstand misfortunes with my hands that have

No nails, or with my rusted sword?

Strange that I trusted Fate though it deceived me

And I slept though days are restless

I am a sacrifice for the one I was raised in his shade

While Fate looks at me with envious eyes

I did not know that misfortunes sea was so deep

And that days are flaming fire

I was showered with the sweetest life in his care

Until the morning of his death cast me in deep gloom

When I lost him, eyes lost their light

And I clamored heavily burdened and weary

What is the point of days that have diverted

Their course away from the pillar of my pavilion?

Missteps have caused me to stumble and fall

Stepping with them on my face and on generosity's face

And they have passed with Hashim's pride and glory

Suppressing them, and patience lies dormant

With their burden, they have carried the heaviest load

The weight of affliction and its crumbling pillar

And since hearts quivered that morn

    Doubts crept under their ribs

Did the news of his death make Amr al-Ala weep

Or did Shaybah al-Hamd crumple in the ground?

It is as if Hashim's ribs never had

Any experience with a heart of ice

Time does not stop promising it a deafening tragedy

That takes away its solidity and firmness

Until it took it by surprise with a leap, fulfilling

That threat on its promised day

No sooner had it relieved its agony over its leader in Muharram

Than it followed it with the agony of another leader

The faith weeps for him with the eye that

Wept for Hussein, the best martyr of all

If their calamities blend, they both

Broke the backbone of faith and monotheism

And though I control the poem’s rein

And go on praising you for a long time

It will not be content with less than what

You destined for it to praise your pure cheek

I am sure your refined traits do not fear

    Time's tyranny and constant blame

I have uttered nothing except the poem translation as you requested.
