1. يا نسيمَ الصبا وريحَ الجنوبِ

    روّحا مُهجتي بنشر الحبيبِ

    O breeze of the morning and wind of the south

    Refresh my ardour with the scent of my beloved

  2. إنَّ روحَ المحبوب رَوحٌ لقلبي

    ما لقلبي آسٍ سوى المحبوبِ

    For the spirit of the beloved is the spirit of my heart

    My heart has no remedy but the beloved

  3. وَعلى البعد منه إن تحملاه

    فعليَّ انفحا به من قريبِ

    And if you carry his scent from afar

    Then waft it to me from nearby

  4. لو سوى نشر يوسفٍ شمَّ يع

    قوبُ إذاً لم يزَل جوى يعقوبِ

    Had it been but Joseph's scent that reached Ya'qub

    Ya'qub's heart would not have ceased longing

  5. وعجيبٌ بميَّةٍ ذابَ قلبي

    ويرى طبَّه بنشرِ المذيبِ

    Wondrous is the love that melts my heart

    And its cure is in the scent of the meltor

  6. ليت يا عذبة اللمى من فؤادي

    فيه أطفأتِ بعضَ هذا اللهيبِ

    Would that from my innermost, O gentle beloved

    You quenched some of these flames

  7. أو على السفح للوداع حبست ال

    ركبَ مقدار لفتة من مُريبِ

    Or at the valley of farewell you delayed

    The caravan, for a fleeting moment of departure

  8. منكِ لو نال ساعدي ضمَّةَ التو

    ديع أدركتُ غاية المطلوبِ

    If from you my arm got a squeeze of farewell

    I would attain the utmost of my hopes

  9. وعلى المتن كان منكِ هلالاً

    حين شرَّقتِ جانحاً للغروبِ

    And if on the saddle you were a crescent from me

    When you oriented west at sunset

  10. ما لطيف الخَيال ضاعف شوقي

    حين وافى بوعده المكذوبِ

    How gently did imagination increase my yearning

    When it came true with its false promise!

  11. فيه جاءت من بعد توهيمه الرك

    ب حذاراً من عاذل ورقيبِ

    In it, after its delusions, the caravan came

    Wary of a blamer or watcher

  12. قلتُ أنَّى وفت فعاد نصيبي

    وصلُها والمِطال كانَ نصيبي

    I said "How could it fulfil while my lot

    Was separation and longing was my lot?"

  13. بينما في العناق قد لفَّنا الشو

    قُ ضجيعين في رداء قشيبِ

    While in embrace passion had wrapped us

    Lying together in a cloak of moth-eaten wool

  14. وإذا الوصل في انتباهي أراه

    سرق الإِفكَ من سرابٍ كذوبِ

    And when in my vigilance I saw our union

    Deceit stole from a mirage of lies

  15. أين منِّي ميّ وقد عوَّذَتها

    غلمةُ الحيّ بالقنا المذروبِ

    Where am I and Meyya that it poisoned

    With acid poured by the cheating rabble?

  16. شمس خدرٍ حجابُها حين تبدو

    جُنحُ ليلٍ من فرعها الغربيبِ

    A sun whose veil is the wings of night

    When it rises, the thickets of dusk entwine it

  17. وهي عن بانةٍ تميسُ دلالاً

    وهي ترنو عن طرف ظبي ربيبِ

    It gazes amorously, coquettish from Bunah

    And it gazes longingly from the eyes of a gentle gazelle

  18. وسوى البدر في الإِنارة لولا

    كُلفةُ البدر ما لها من ضَريبِ

    And but for the arrogance of the full moon

    It has no tax, and lights up the darkness

  19. حسدتني حتَّى عيوني عليها

    لو تذكَّرتها لأضحت تشي بي

    It envied me to the extent that its eyes upon me

    Would have given me away, had it remembered me

  20. أو سرت مُوهناً إليَّ لظنَّت

    كلَّ نجمٍ في الأُفق عين رقيبِ

    Or had it crept secretly to me, it would have thought

    Every star on the horizon a spying eye

  21. بُركت ليلةٌ تخيَّلت من أر

    دانها عُطّرت بنشر الطيبِ

    Blessed was a night I imagined from its down

    It was scented with the scent of perfume

  22. قلتُ ذا الطيبُ من كثيب حماها

    حَملته لنا الصَبا في الهُبوبِ

    I said "This perfume is from a Kuthayb it protected"

    The morning breeze brought it to us from the blowing wind

  23. قال لي الصحب من بشير أتانا

    من حِمى الكرخ لا الحِمى والكثيبِ

    My companion said "The herald that came to us

    Is from Karkh's enclosure, not Kuthayb's"

  24. مُخبراً عن محمدٍ كوكب المجد

    سرى الدَّاءُ للحسود المريبِ

    Informing about Muhammad, star of glory

    Illness has left for the envious wretched one

  25. أيّهذا البشير لي حبَّذا أنت

    بشيراً ببرءِ داءِ الحبيبِ

    O you who bring me this good news!

    You are the excellent herald of my beloved's wellness

  26. لو سواهُ روحٌ لجسمي لأَتحف

    تك فيه وقلَّ من موهوبِ

    Had it been another spirit for my body I would have gifted

    You that spirit, and little remains from gifts

  27. لي أهديتَ فرحةً ما سرت قبلُ

    ولا بعدُ مثلها في القلوبِ

    You brought me a joy the like of which never

    Before or after flowed in hearts

  28. عرسَ الدهرُ قبلها الذنبَ عندي

    فغدا مثمراً بعفوٍ قريبِ

    The days of yore carried sin before it

    So it bore fruit through near forgiveness

  29. وغريبٌ من الزمان وما زال

    لديه اختراع كلّ غريبِ

    And wondrous from eras is one who still

    Invents every wondrous thing

  30. أن أراني وما أراني سواه

    حسناتٍ تُجنى بغرس الذنوبِ

    That I see myself and see none but Him

    Good deeds reaped from planting sins

  31. عجباً كيف أَولد النحسُ سعداً

    شقَّ في نوره ظلامَ الخطوبِ

    A wonder! How the sinister gives birth to bliss

    Its light pierced the gloom of calamities

  32. فمحيا الدنيا غدا وهو طلقٌ

    ما بصافي بياضه من شحوبِ

    It erased the days' gloom, so it became serene

    No pallor in its sheer whiteness

  33. ضاحكٌ من غضارة البشر أُنساً

    وهو بالأمس موحشُ التقطيبِ

    Laughing at mankind's conceit familiarly

    When yesterday it frowned severely

  34. أيها الواخدُ المغلّس في عز

    مٍ على الهول ليس بالمغلوبِ

    O vanquisher clad in mighty glory

    Fear cannot defeat you

  35. صِل على الأمن ناجياً لمحلٍ

    في ذرى الكرخ بالندى مهضوبِ

    Seek refuge in the Guardian's protection

    With promise and warning

  36. مستجارٌ بالعزِّ يحرس أَو با

    لحافِظَينِ الترغيبِ والترهيبِ

    In it the elite of pure honor reside

    Springtide of the chaste at youth

  37. وبه حيّ صفوةَ الشرف المحضِ

    ربيعَ العُفاة عند الجُدوبِ

    Of fine origin, its branch in the abode of glory

    Grows into noble, generous men

  38. طيبُ الأصل فرعه في صريح ال

    مجد يُنمى إلى نجيب نجيبِ

    Bountiful, generous, when the enclosure

    Shows its people cheerful-faced

  39. وافرُ البشر والسماح إذا المحلُ

    بدا عامُه بوجهٍ قطوبِ

    He gave freely until delegations of gift-seekers came

    Superfluous, though no superfluity in him

  40. جاد حتَّى مسَّ الوفود من الأخ

    ذ لغُوبٌ وما به من لغوبِ

    In an era that if the Blessed One spread its prosperity

    It would not have spread blessing

  41. في زمانٍ لو الخصيب به ين

    شره الله لم يكن بالخصيبِ

    Say to him "O Muhammad, you are righteous

    To gain each wondrous merit"

  42. قل له يا محمدٌ صالحٌ أَنت

    لإِحراز كلِّ فضل غريبِ

    You and Yemen shall not cease in the shade

    Of a canopy erected from the Highest Heavens

  43. ليس تنفكّ أنت واليمن في ظلّ

    رواقٍ من العُلى مضروبِ

    For you is felicity wherever you are, its star never

    Inclined away from you into setting

  44. ولك السعدُ حيث كنت قرينٌ

    لم يمل عنك نجمه لغروبِ

    Bliss was complete when you were gladdened

    By recovery of your most beloved brother

  45. كمل الأُنس حين صرت تهنّى

    بشفى أُنسك الأعزّ الحبيبِ

    And your brother, a chamberpot of virtues

    For the Highest, its overseer and watcher

  46. وأَخوك الذي قِداحُ المعالي

    للمعلى منها حوى والرقيبِ

    Majid, his manners refined in

    Glory and pride, the utmost of refinement

  47. ماجد هُذّبت خلائقه في ال

    مجد والفخرِ غايةَ التهذيبِ

    Of pleasant demeanor, face, tongue and spacious chest

    So remain exalted as long as the sun rose

  48. ذو بنانٍ ندٍ ووجهٍ جميل

    ولسانٍ طلقٍ وصدرٍ رحيبِ

    And declined on its horizon into setting

    In sincere joy, sparkling eyes

  49. فابقيا للعلاءِ ما بدت الشم

    سُ ومالت في أُفقها للغروبِ

    And lasting bliss, a wholesome living

  50. في سرورٍ صافٍ وطرف قريرٍ

    ونعيم باقٍ وعيشٍ رطيبِ
