1. عَجِبتُ لِلنيلِ يَدري أَنَّ بُلبُلَهُ

    صادٍ وَيَسقي رُبا مِصرٍ وَيَسقينا

    I wondered at the Nile, it knows its nightingale

    Is going and it waters a land of Upper Egypt and waters us

  2. وَاللَهِ ما طابَ لِلأَصحابِ مَورِدُهُ

    وَلا اِرتَضَوا بَعدَكُم مِن عَيشِهِم لينا

    By Allah, its watering place did not please the friends

    Nor did they, after you, approve of the softness of their living

  3. لَم تَنأَ عَنهُ وَإِن فارَقتَ شاطِئَهُ

    وَقَد نَأَينا وَإِن كُنّا مُقيمينا

    You did not keep away from it, though you left its bank

    While we kept away, though we were staying
