1. خَرَجَ الغَواني يَحتَجِجـ

    ـنَ وَرُحتُ أَرقُبُ جَمعَهُنَّه

    The youths went out to protest

    And I went out to watch their gathering

  2. فَإِذا بِهِنَّ تَخِذنَ مِن

    سودِ الثِيابِ شِعارَهُنَّه

    When there they donned black attire

    As their uniform

  3. فَطَلَعنَ مِثلَ كَواكِبٍ

    يَسطَعنَ في وَسَطِ الدُجُنَّه

    Emerging like stars

    Shining amidst the darkness

  4. وَأَخَذنَ يَجتَزنَ الطَريـ

    ـقَ وَدارُ سَعدٍ قَصدُهُنَّه

    And marched down the road

    Heading towards Saad's house

  5. يَمشينَ في كَنَفِ الوَقا

    رِ وَقَد أَبَنَّ شُعورَهُنَّه

    Walking under moonlight

    Their hair uncovered

  6. وَإِذا بِجَيشٍ مُقبِلٍ

    وَالخَيلُ مُطلَقَةُ الأَعِنَّه

    When an approaching army

    With horses at full gallop

  7. وَإِذا الجُنودُ سُيوفُها

    قَد صُوِّبَت لِنُحورِهِنَّه

    And soldiers with swords

    Aimed at their necks

  8. وَإِذا المَدافِعُ وَالبَنا

    دِقُ وَالصَوارِمُ وَالأَسِنَّه

    Cannons, rifles, and blades

    Surrounding them on all sides

  9. وَالخَيلُ وَالفُرسانُ قَد

    ضَرَبَت نِطاقاً حَولَهُنَّه

    While flowers and basil were

    Their only weapons that day

  10. وَالوَردُ وَالرَيحانُ في

    ذاكَ النَهارِ سِلاحُهُنَّه

    The two armies clashed for hours

    Turning the days white with age

  11. فَتَطاحَنَ الجَيشانِ سا

    عاتٍ تَشيبُ لَها الأَجِنَّه

    The women and girls trembled

    With no protector

  12. فَتَضَعضَعَ النِسوانُ وَالـ

    ـنِسوانُ لَيسَ لَهُنَّ مُنَّه

    Then scattered in defeat

    Fleeing back to their homes

  13. ثُمَّ اِنهَزَمنَ مُشَتَّتا

    تِ الشَملِ نَحوَ قُصورِهِنَّه

    Let the mighty army rejoice

    In their victory and defeat of them

  14. فَليَهنَأَ الجَيشُ الفَخو

    رُ بِنَصرِهِ وَبِكَسرِهِنَّه

    It was as if the Germans

    Had donned veils among them

  15. فَكَأَنَّما الأَلمانُ قَد

    لَبِسوا البَراقِعَ بَينَهُنَّه

    And came with Hindenburg

    Secretly leading them to Egypt

  16. وَأَتَوا بِهِندِنبُرجَ مُخـ

    ـتَفِياً بِمِصرَ يَقودُهُنَّه

    And so feared their might

    And dreaded their cunning

  17. فَلِذاكَ خافوا بَأسَهُـ

    ـنَ وَأَشفَقوا مِن كَيدِهِنَّه
