أَنا في الجيزَةِ ثاوٍ

لَيسَ لي فيها أَنيسُ

I wander alone in Giza,

I have no companion here,

أَنكَرَ الأُنسُ مَكاني

وَنَأى عَنّي الجَليسُ

Familiarity shuns my place,

Friends avoid me,

لَيسَ يَدري مَن رَآني

أَطَليقَ أَم حَبيسُ

None who sees me knows

If I am free or captive.
